The authorities in Bangladesh have opened investigations into tens of thousands of people in recent weeks as security forces combed through neighborhoods as part of their deadly crackdown on a student protest that had spiraled into violence. The widening legal net, confirmed in interviews with police officials and a review of records, comes as arrests surpassed 10,000 since the crackdown on protesters began two weeks ago. Charges range from vandalism and arson to theft, trespassing and damage of state property. “This is a witch hunt,” said Smriti Singh, the regional director for South Asia at Amnesty International. Conservative estimates put the death toll at more than 200, mostly students and youths.

CNN —Far-right lawmakers and protesters breached the perimeter of a controversial Israeli detention facility for Palestinians on Monday, after the Israeli military confirmed it was investigating soldiers over the alleged abuse of a prisoner. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for immediate calm at Sde Teiman and condemned the break-in at the base in a statement on Monday. Last month, Halevi said the military had launched a probe into allegations of mistreatment at Sde Teiman, as well as at Anatot and Ofer. As part of CNN’s investigation into Sde Teiman, three Israeli whistleblowers said that Palestinian detainees at the base were constantly blindfolded and held under extreme physical restraint. The account tallied with details of a letter authored by a doctor working at Sde Teiman published by Ha’aretz in April.

No one was injured and the prime minister was safely returned to his office. In May, Conille was appointed prime minister during the government’s transition period, with the aim to eventually lead Haiti to new elections. Israeli military police detained at least nine military reservists on Monday at an Israeli army base where thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been held, taking them in for questioning as part of an investigation into “suspected substantial abuse of a detainee” there, the military said. Several Israeli media outlets reported that the Palestinian detainee had been hospitalized with a serious injury to his anus; some outlets reported that the reservists were accused of sexually abusing the detainee. The reservists’ detentions soon sparked a crisis at the base, called Sde Teiman, where videos posted on social media showed reservists shouting in anger about the raid — a rare instance of Israeli soldiers confronting their own. The tensions escalated, videos showed, when a crowd of flag-waving civilian protesters broke into the base through its metal gates in support of the detained reservists. By late afternoon, the military said police and soldiers had driven the protesters out of the base.

Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency in New York City jails on Saturday and issued an executive order that blocked key parts of a local law that would have banned solitary confinement in the jails. The order, one of three Mr. Adams issued on Saturday that pertained to the jails, was an unusual step that came only one day before the law was set to go into effect. After Mr. Adams vetoed the bill in January, arguing that it would make jail staff and detainees less safe, the Council issued a rare override of his veto. The law would have banned solitary confinement for detainees who were accused of breaking jail rules, beyond a four-hour “de-escalation period” during an emergency. It would also have banned the use of handcuffs or shackles to restrain detainees riding in Correction Department vehicles.

While most people wouldn't decline a backup option in another country, the process of obtaining a secondary passport can be quite complicated — and expensive. Business Insider spoke to Judi Galst, who manages Henley & Partners' New York office, about the general steps required to get a secondary passport. AdvertisementThe specific requirements vary by country, Galst said. Countries like Spain are slow for citizenship approval, but have a relatively quick path to residence through investment, Galst said. The Caribbean has the lowest cost, and it requires a $200,000 contribution or $300,000 investment in real estate per application.
