‘I Need That’ Review: Danny DeVito in Denial

Danny DeVito Photo: Joan MarcusThe national pastime—I refer not to baseball, but to the acquisition of too much stuff and the refusal to get rid of a single dog-eared book, worn pair of shoes or old Playbill, as if life weren’t worth living without each—comes under sympathetic scrutiny in “I Need That,” a modest but likable, sentiment-spritzed comedy by Theresa Rebeck , on Broadway in a Roundabout Theatre Company production.

New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty Thursday following a monthlong trial that was almost as wild as the rapid rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX itself. He was found guilty of stealing billions of dollars from accounts belonging to customers of FTX. During the trial, Bankman-Fried took the unusual – and risky – decision to testify in his own defense. “I was kind of busy and lazy and didn’t bother getting a haircut for long periods of time,” Bankman-Fried said. “No offense to the Kansas City Royals, but we didn’t want to be known as the Kansas City Royals of crypto exchanges,” SBF testified.

Opinion | The World Series Didn’t Match the Very Best
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The real world falls far short of a meritocracy, of course. In the wider world, I think, it would be good to squeeze more of the randomness out of who succeeds, getting closer to true meritocracy. The team owners want to expand the playoffs to 14 teams, but the players’ union has resisted. An inferior team can win a playoff series, or even more than one series, if the “game of inches” breaks its way. The Diamondbacks being a case in point, at least until they bombed out in the World Series, losing the best-of-seven competition after five games.

The Ukraine-Israel Test for U.S. Democracy

Wonder Land: The Democratic Party never expected Jew-hatred to be a feature of its coalition. Images: AP Composite: Mark KellyThe Beltway press likes to fret about the fate of U.S. democracy, invariably because of Republicans. But now a real democratic test is arriving: support for Israel and Ukraine. Can Washington’s factions rise above their parochial interests and compromise to help two U.S. friends fighting for their national survival? But strip away the inside baseball and the stakes are whether America can still rally to a common purpose, as an axis of hostility works together against U.S. interests.

It doesn’t come with a ring, but this week was still special for former First Fan George W. Bush. Nearly three decades after he sold the Texas Rangers, the team that propelled him into politics finally brought home its first World Series title. For the onetime Rangers managing partner, it was an enervating finale to a championship that eluded him when he was signing the checks. “I think he’s loving it,” said Tom Bernstein, a longtime friend and fellow partner in the Rangers ownership back in the day. “And, of course, I congratulate the players of this awesome team on winning the first World Series in our club’s history.

During baseball season, the public buses in Houston flash a message as they rumble through the city: “Go Astros! !”A similar sort of communal baseball spirit has not typically surrounded the Texas Rangers, a team whose claim to the hearts of all Texans had, until their World Series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, been stymied by having never won a championship in their 51 years since relocating to the North Texas city of Arlington. Wedged between Dallas and Fort Worth, the city forms an almost seamless part of a sprawling urban agglomeration, a fast-growing and sports-crazed area of a fast-growing and sports-crazed state, where winners are prized and football — in particular, the Dallas Cowboys — has been dominant. But as the Rangers kept winning and winning, fans emerged. Excitement in October became palpable across the connected cities.

Frank Howard, the Bunyanesque slugger who struck some of baseball’s more awesome home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Senators while rolling up a prodigious strikeout total as well, unable to conquer his penchant for chasing bad balls, died on Monday in Aldie, Va. His death, at a hospital, was caused by complications of a stroke, his daughter Catherine Braun said. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds — though well above that weight at times — Howard played for 16 seasons in the major leagues and hit 382 homers. Many of his home runs — and even some hits that didn’t clear the fence — were unforgettable. As a Dodger in 1960, he hit a ball over the left-field wall at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh that was found alongside a parked car some 560 feet from home plate.

Gavin Newsom is the latest to find out that plans for a confident jump shot can turn into a torrent of online potshots. On a trip to China, the two-term Democrat took a detour from his official meetings on climate change to join a group of Beijing schoolkids for a game of basketball. Video circulating online shows Newsom wearing slacks, an open-collared shirt and dress shoes while towering over schoolchildren on the court. The governor playfully twirls a basketball on a fingertip, then executes a spin move as he heads toward the basket. “Newsom destroys kid during basketball game in China,” celebrity website TMZ tweeted.

He encourages skeptical taxpayers to look at universal basic income from the same "selfish point of view." Among those who received a basic income in Stockton, California, the unemployment rate dropped by nearly 50%. With more data at hand than theoretical projection, the evidence is overwhelming: Universal basic income is working nearly universally. Promising as these pilot programs are, the chances of a truly universal basic income in America remain remote.
