Australian property listing firm REA Group said on Wednesday that Britain's largest real estate portal Rightmove had rejected its 5.6 billion pounds ($7.32 billion) cash-and-stock takeover offer. REA shares dropped 1.25% in early trade on Wednesday. The offer consisted of 305 pence in cash and 0.0381 new REA shares and was non-binding and subject to due diligence. Following the trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 100 shares of HD, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to about 1.1% from roughly 0.56%. Rates will come down and activity should pick up after the Fed gets a few rate cuts under its belt. That, at least, is what Toll Brothers CEO Doug Yearley said on "Squawk on the Street" earlier Wednesday when speaking about 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates and the luxury homebuilder's business. If Yearley is correct, then it won't be too long until mortgage rates are at a sweet spot where housing turnover really starts to pick up. On 9/11, the first meme dropped at 8:56 a.m. "That is a big fucking hole in the World Trade Center sirs!" 9/11 jokes, in other words, often have very little to do with 9/11. Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Gold prices steadied on Wednesday, as investors keenly awaited the U.S. inflation data for hints on the size of the Federal Reserve's potential interest rate cut next week. The U.S. Consumer Price Index data is due at 1230 GMT, while the Producer Price Index reading and initial jobless claims are due on Thursday. The Fed will lower interest rates by 25 basis points at each of the three remaining policy meetings in 2024, according to a majority of economists in a Reuters poll. Zero-yield bullion tends to be a preferred investment amid lower interest rates and geopolitical turmoil.

Though the debate opened with a discussion about the economy, the conversation quickly devolved into platitudes, boasts, and personal jabs. Industry leaders told Business Insider that they hoped to hear the candidates discuss crypto guidelines, regulation, and key appointments on Tuesday night, but little was said about any of those topics. "What we really need is either a debate or a whole section of a debate devoted to economic issues," Tedeschi said. Tedeschi told Business Insider that we need clarity about Trump's proposed tariffs, which are the "most consequential and radical thing that he's proposed." Chris Larsen, the billionaire co-founder of blockchain payments company Ripple, told Business Insider that Harris was "spectacular."

Along with Greyhound, Megabus became one of the two mega-carriers in the United States. The intercity bus industry is not in complete disarray, but things are not going great there. Bus industry insiders also note that they're often treated as an afterthought by policymakers even though they carry tens of millions of people each year. The company's innovation pipeline provide long-term growth potential, with the earnings event likely serving as a catalyst for further upside. With expected EPS growth of 14% and revenue growth of 11%, Adobe maintain its leadership in the software industry. To capitalize on the potential for an earnings-driven rally, we suggest using a "broken wing butterfly," which offers a high reward-to-risk ratio. Specifically, I suggest the ADBE Sep 20, 2024 $585/630/650 Call butterfly at $10.96 Debit. The top 1% aren't the only ones with a target on their backs: Those in the $400,000 to $1 million income bracket could see their capital gains tax rise under her. There has also been concern about whether the step-up in basis, a provision that adjusts capital gains taxes for inherited assets, could be repealed. A 1031 Exchange is popularly used to sell and buy investment property while deferring capital gains tax until future generations inherit it. Once they do, a step-up basis can be used to dismiss those previous capital gains taxes. Last night, left-leaning Swifties everywhere breathed a sigh of relief: Taylor Swift finally endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for president. Two officials told NBC News they had no idea Swift's endorsement was coming — her running mate, Tim Walz, even found out on live TV — but they were definitely ready for it. (A representative for Swift didn't respond to a request for comment from BI.) Swift didn't officially endorse Biden until October 7, less than one month before the 2020 election. A cargo ship is sailing towards the docking of a foreign trade container terminal in Qingdao Port, Shandong province, in Qingdao, China, on June 7, 2024. Judah Levine, head of research for Freightos, says if history is any guide, additional tariffs will fuel ocean freight rates. Any increase in freight demand will fuel rates, said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at ocean freight rate intelligence platform Xeneta. "When ocean container shipping markets increase, that cost gets passed down the line and ultimately it is the end-consumer who pays the price," Sand added. Xeneta data shows the last time Trump ramped up tariffs on Chinese imports during the trade war in 2018, the ocean container shipping markets spiked more than 70%.

According to Bank of America, one area of the market is set to benefit from increased market volatility: quality stocks, or stocks with strong business models and financial fundamentals. And the cherry on top is that quality stocks — which typically become expensive during downturns — are still cheap despite their recent rally, coming out of a two-decade rut. As seen in the graph below, the high-quality factor serves as a hedge against elevated market volatility. Bank of AmericaQuality is still cheapLuckily for investors, this safe-haven area of the stock market is trading at an attractive valuation. California Attorney General Rob Bonta cautioned executives at social media and other tech companies to work harder to protect voters from "deception, intimidation, and dissuasion," ahead of the November election. The letter reviewed sections of California law that prohibit interference with voting rights by misleading people about voting place and time and by using intimidation tactics. The letter follows pop icon Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris for president on Tuesday night following the debate. Investors and Wall Street analysts may want to take a closer look at stocks that could be winners under a President Kamala Harris after Tuesday night's debate . National polls showed a tight race heading into the debate, but some now believe Harris could get a bump from her performance. "We expect a near-term bounce towards Vice President Harris following the first debate with former President Trump, but the longer-term impact remains unclear," Raymond James Washington analyst Ed Mills said in a note to clients late Tuesday night. Wolfe Research has a similar list of stocks in an anti-Trump trade basket, including health care stocks like Centene and HCA . Of course, it could be difficult for new Democratic policies to become law even with a Harris win in November, depending on how Congressional races shake out.

The long and complex political legacy of 9/11

Trump and Harris — who had not met until Tuesday night at their fiery debate – even shook hands for the second time in less than 24 hours. 9/11 is now far enough in the past that it’s taking on a historic hue. The gathering of past, present and future US leaders Tuesday was a reminder of the still unfolding cascade of political consequences triggered by the attacks. And, underscoring the passage of time, some young voters born after 9/11 will this year vote in their second presidential election. But the world’s worst terror attack still has a powerful psychological and political half-life and is embedded deep in America’s soul, as we are reminded every September.
