WASHINGTON — Longtime Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., was readmitted to the hospital Sunday night, just days after he was released from a weeks-long hospital stay to a rehabilitation facility, a source close to the congressman confirmed Monday. Pascrell is now receiving care at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., the source said. Pascrell checked himself into a hospital on July 14 with a fever, which his staff said may have been caused by a respiratory illness. At 87 years old, Pascrell is the second-oldest House member, only behind retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. A former member of the New Jersey General Assembly and a former Patterson mayor, Pascrell was first elected to Congress in 1996.

WASHINGTON — The hard-right Freedom Caucus is pushing House Republican leaders to condition government funding on passage of new proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote and create a new deadline that faces broad Senate opposition. If GOP leaders attached it to government funding, it would spark a standoff with Democrats and President Joe Biden that risks a government shutdown. House and Senate Democrats favor a late 2024 deadline. Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., said the Freedom Caucus demands amount to “outrageous partisan pills” that are a “nonstarter,” calling for a bipartisan approach. “The House will continue its successful effort to responsibly fund the government for FY25 when it returns from its district work period.”

Two federal district courts in Texas issued a national "stay" of the regulation, in separate rulings in July. The rule will "create a level playing field" for all trusted investment professionals, according to a Labor Department spokesperson. "The insurance industry can continue to advise investors and sell annuities, without giving advice that is imprudent, disloyal, or tainted by misrepresentations or overcharges," the spokesperson said. Current retirement rollover advice rules stay in effectIn the meantime, the current status quo remains in effect, attorneys said. Current rules let brokers give investment advice that earns them a higher commission but isn't in savers' best interests, the Labor Department said during the rulemaking process.

"If economic fears continue to fade and the market becomes more micro-driven in coming months, then the recent sell-off represents an attractive opportunity to buy stocks with healthy fundamentals at valuation discounts," wrote Goldman chief U.S. equity strategist David Kostin and team in a note to clients Friday. Goldman screened for stocks that have seen their earnings estimates ratchet up since the start of the third quarter, but posted weak relative returns during the last week. Goldman noted that cyclical stocks underperformed defensive names last week, showing that "macro" is driving equity returns. Once investors' focus returns to normal, stocks with strong fundamentals and valuations like those on this list will start to benefit, the firm argues. "If the data confirm our economists' optimistic view, investors will likely pivot back to focusing on alpha opportunities rather than market betas."

In the 1980s, the U.S. military was in the middle of a transformation. Mr. Walz, now Minnesota governor and the presumptive Democratic candidate for vice president, raised his hand to join the Army National Guard just two days past his 17th birthday on April 8, 1981. Mr. Walz never went to war. And it ended when Mr. Walz was 41, as the military ramped up for war after Sept. 11. Since being picked as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate this week, he has found himself facing allegations previously aired by Minnesota Republicans and newly amplified by JD Vance, former President Donald J. WASHINGTON — U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday approved a request from special counsel Jack Smith to allow for more time to propose the next steps in the government's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The special counsel's office said in its filing Thursday that prosecutors are still assessing the "new precedent set forth" in the Trump immunity decision by the Supreme Court. Smith asked Chutkan to give them and Trump's lawyers until Aug. 30 to submit the joint status report and to schedule the status conference after that. The appeals process made certain that the trial would not happen before Election Day on Nov. 5. Last weekend Chutkan denied an older motion from Trump to dismiss the election interference indictment, filed before the Supreme Court took up the case.

The retailer is cracking down on sharing membership cards with a new policy in which all cards will be scanned at store entrances. Guests without cards must be accompanied by a member to enter, making it harder to slip in on borrowed cards. Members with cards without photos will be asked to show valid photo ID, and they are encouraged to have their photos taken to add to their cards at the membership counter. Costco relies on membership fees to drive most of its revenue and help keep merchandise prices low. Last year, Costco stepped up enforcement by adding an extra check for memberships in self-checkout aisles to stop shoppers from using other members’ cards.

Joe Raedle | Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have agreed to a debate on Sept. 10 hosted by ABC News, both presidential nominees said Thursday. Trump said CBS News will host a vice presidential debate between his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, and Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Joe Raedle | Getty ImagesNBC has pitched both campaigns multiple potential dates for a presidential debate, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. Trump's campaign agreed to Sept. 25 but the Harris campaign has yet to agree to that date, the person said. Harris since then had taunted Trump for refusing to commit to the ABC debate, whose Sept. 10 date was set originally for Trump to debate President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the election last month.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump will face off in a televised prime-time matchup on Sept. 10, ABC News said on Thursday, setting up the latest crucial moment in an already unpredictable presidential campaign. The 90-minute debate is expected to be held in Philadelphia, according to two people with knowledge of the plans. In one sense, the announcement maintains the status quo: Mr. Trump agreed months ago to debate President Biden on ABC on that same date. But the Republican nominee wavered on that commitment after Mr. Biden withdrew from the race, arguing that he had not agreed to those terms with Ms. Harris. This year’s previous debate, in June, was perhaps the most consequential in the 64-year history of televised presidential matchups.

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, makes a statement to the press outside the U.S. Capitol about testifying publicly to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023. Prosecutors in the U.S. criminal tax case against Hunter Biden accused him of accepting payments from a Romanian businessman who sought to "influence U.S. government agencies" in connection with a criminal probe in Romania. ABC said the claim stems from Hunter Biden's work for Gabriel Popoviciu, a wealthy Romanian identified as "G.P." in the filing, and who prosecutors say hired Hunter Biden for legal work in late 2015 when Joe Biden was U.S. vice president. Lawyers for Hunter Biden did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Shares of Disney fell Wednesday as concerns about attendance at its theme parks overshadowed streaming profits and better-than-expected headline results. The combined streaming business — encompassing Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — turned in its first-ever quarterly profit slightly ahead of schedule. Then, about two weeks ago, CNBC parent Comcast issued weak April-to-June results for its Universal theme parks business, which weighed on Disney's stock in that session . And, at this point, getting to profitability in the combined streaming business, which adds ESPN+ into the mix, was the biggest focus. "So, I do believe the parks business is in fundamentally good shape.

Disappointing economic data recently generated worries that the Fed missed an opportunity at its meeting last week to, if not cut rates outright, send a clearer signal that easing is on the way. In the past, the Fed has implemented just nine such cuts, and all have come amid extreme duress, according to Bank of America. Lacking a catalyst for an intermeeting cut, the Fed is nonetheless expected to cut rates almost as swiftly as it hiked from March 2022-July 2023. Still, any quakes in the data, such as Friday’s downside surprise to the nonfarm payrolls numbers, could ignite recession talk quickly.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

The U.S. military turned over control of its last base in Niger to local forces on Monday, ending a yearslong counterterrorism mission in the West African country even as violent extremism remains on the rise in the region. A group of U.S. troops boarded an Air Force cargo plane and flew out of a $110 million air base in central Niger that was built with Pentagon money, among the last of 1,000 personnel that Washington had agreed to pull out by Sept. 15. A small number of troops will remain at the United States Embassy for a short time to wrap up administrative details, officials said. “The withdrawal of U.S. forces and assets from Air Base 201 in Agadez is complete,” the Pentagon’s Africa Command said in a statement, referring to the installation in central Niger. “The effective cooperation and communication between the U.S. and Nigerien armed forces ensured that this turnover was finished ahead of schedule and without complications.”
