ACCRA, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Cross-border payments company Wise (WISEa.L) has suspended transfers in Ghana's cedi currency after a rapid appreciation against the dollar this week made it costlier to move money to the West African country, a Wise spokesperson told Reuters on Friday. Ghana, once considered a rising star among emerging market economies, is today facing a generational debt crisis. A spokesperson for London-based Wise said that cedi functions, which were suspended Thursday, would be restored "as soon as the situation has stabilised" and that only a small number of transfers were affected. "That said... we’ve seen the central bank buy dollars from the open market to shore up its reserves," Akoto said. Here’s a look at how different financing instruments fared in 2022 and what’s ahead for 2023. Activity in the convertible debt market has picked up in recent weeks. Still, there could be financing opportunities for deals in 2023 in the form of syndicated loans, bankers said. “CFOs have to be aware of that and focus on cash conversion and margins,” he said, pointing to the increase in financing costs. “We expect deals will continue to get done,” he said, adding that those could however come with more oversight from lenders.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell holds a news conference in Washington, November 2, 2022. It's the labor market as much as the CPI, and employment data remains troubling for the Fed. Inflation is down, but employee expectations are still high for raises because they have lost purchasing power. This views positions the positive news on CPI inflation as only one piece of the puzzle, and not even the biggest piece as far as the Fed is concerned. And until the Fed sees that labor market inflation coming into line, the central bank is not likely to make a major move away from its tightening course.
December is the month for eating all the cookies

Editor’s Note: Food writer Casey Barber says December is the month for baking cookies. Freezing cookies can also help save time in the long run by allowing you to start your holiday baking early. Lin makes cookies weeks in advance of his parties and thaws them at room temperature up to two days before an event. If you are short on timeBar cookies are Lin’s secret weapon when it comes to holiday baking. Many cookies, such as Lin’s red velvet crackle cookies, require that the dough be chilled before portioning and rolling, so it’s key to take that into consideration.
When she checked availability of these pain- and fever-reducing meds this week, out of 40 products – different flavors, sizes and strengths – none was in stock. For kids over 2 months of age, there is no magic number at which a fever needs to be treated. She says this is a great option for kids who can’t keep food or liquids down, too. What not to doThere are also some important things not to do if you can’t find the medication you need. Also, lukewarm baths are OK, but it’s not a good idea to put a child with a fever into a cold bath, Ahmann says.
Thomas Barwick | Stone | Getty ImagesThe share of retirement savers who withdrew money from a 401(k) plan to cover a financial hardship hit a record high in October, according to data from Vanguard Group. Nearly 0.5% of workers participating in a 401(k) plan took a new "hardship distribution" in October, according to Vanguard, which tracks 5 million savers. Americans are 'feeling the pinch from inflation'Nearly all 401(k) plans allow workers to take hardship withdrawals, but employers may vary in their rationale for allowing them. Participants can also access 401(k) savings via loans or nonhardship withdrawals. Beyond the apparent acute financial need among households, hardship withdrawals carry negative repercussions.
New York CNN Business —A must-pass defense bill now being negotiated in Congress includes new sanctions designed to trip up Russia’s war machine by targeting Moscow’s mountain of gold. If passed, the defense bill would directly sanction any American entities that knowingly transact with or transport gold from Russia’s central bank holdings. As of mid-2021, Russia’s central bank held $127 billion worth of gold, according to the Central Bank of Russia. The gold is stored at vaults within the territory of the Russian Federation, the Russian central bank has said. In June, President Joe Biden announced the United States and the rest of the G7 would impose a ban on imports of Russian gold.
GameStop launched a digital wallet earlier this year to enable transactions in a marketplace it is building for gamers and others to buy, sell and trade non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. However, with crypto winter setting in and the value of cryptocurrencies plummeting, GameStop's digital wallet ambitions face a bleak future. GameStop posted revenue of $1.19 billion in the third quarter, missing estimates of $1.36 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data. On an adjusted basis, the company lost 31 cents per share, compared with analysts' estimates of a loss of 28 cents per share. GameStop's expenses as a percentage of revenue was 32.7% in the quarter, down from 34.1% in the second quarter, as the company has tried to cut costs by reducing its workforce and shutting down stores.
Any sustained increase in competition for coal with a re-invigorated China may push up coal prices, further sapping the budgets of European utilities and governments and jeopardising efforts to finance an energy transition away from fossil fuels. BANNER YEAREurope's thermal coal imports through November jumped by 36.2% from the same period in 2021 to roughly 83 million tonnes, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler. China's coal production has also scaled a record, fuelled in part by Beijing's efforts to improve energy security. China thermal coal pricesEurope's main coal price benchmarks have also pushed higher in recent days, with prices for the first quarter of 2023 flipping to a widening premium over front-month prices this week. New York CNN Business —Some top CEOs appear to be worried that the economy could be the Grinch that steals Christmas this year. Stocks sank Tuesday, the second straight day of losses on Wall Street. The Dow fell more than 500 points, or 1.5% in midday trading. Four of America’s leading chief executives gave cautious comments about the economy in interviews Tuesday, and that seems to have spooked the market. Shares of JPMorgan Chase, Walmart and Goldman Sachs, which are all Dow components, fell 0.6%, 1.3% and 2.6% respectively.
Food Commodities Are Getting Cheaper—Unlike Grocery Bills
  + stars: | 2022-12-02 | by ( Yusuf Khan | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Global prices for commodities such as wheat and sugar have fallen back to where they were a year ago, but consumers are still likely to feel the pinch at the checkout. The disconnect is because of extraordinary uncertainty about future production of key foodstuffs such as wheat, and because price pressures elsewhere—including for energy and wages—can have a major impact on grocery bills.
WASHINGTON — The lobster featured on the menu of Thursday’s state dinner comes with caviar, squash ravioli — and a heaping side of controversy. Maine officials would typically be thrilled to have their state’s most famous export featured at such a high-profile White House event. Maine lobstermen have long prided themselves on sustainability and argue the concern about right whales is misplaced. “I am glad President Biden and his State Dinner guests had the opportunity to enjoy Maine lobster,” Democratic Maine Gov. “The administration should make their policy consistent with their culinary preferences.”The Office of the First Lady, which oversees the state dinner preparations, did not respond to a request for comment.
I shared my finances with an advisor to get his advice for preparing for a recession. In addition to having a solid health insurance plan, Keil suggests looking into a plan that includes a health savings account. Another strategy Keil mentioned is that if you have an HSA but can cover a health expense out of pocket, do that and save the receipt. For example, some of my fixed costs include my rent payment, health insurance monthly premium, and utility bills (electricity, cable bills, etc.). Action step: Keil also recommends opening a Roth IRA since withdrawals of both contributions and earnings are tax-free once you turn 59 1/2.
Suze Orman speaks during AOL's BUILD Speaker Series at AOL Studios In New York. In a pinch, it can be tempting to take money from your 401(k) plan or other retirement savings account. But that may be one of the biggest financial mistakes you can make, personal finance expert Suze Orman said Tuesday during a webcast hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center. "The majority of Americans, in my opinion, barely have the money today to pay for their everyday expenses," Orman said. To break that cycle, people need to establish an emergency savings account dedicated solely to unexpected expenses, Orman said.
Motoball, or motorcycle polo, is a sport that traces back to Europe in the 1930s. It's essentially soccer on motorcycles, or a real-life version of the video game "Rocket League." No matter how you describe the sport known as motoball, there's no doubt that it takes plenty of skill and guts to be successful at. Competitors use 250-cc motorbikes to race around a dirt-covered soccer pitch at up to 40 miles per hour chasing after an enlarged soccer ball. For those who don't get enough thrill from a sport like soccer, this added element of horsepower may be what they're looking for.
"Salaries hit the roof," Yeshab Giri, the chief commercial officer at Randstad India, told Insider. They see the decline more as the market returning to the brink of normalcy, and said there's still hope for laid-off tech workers — as long as they've been active in their jobs. In the same quarter, Infosys, which hires a 345,000-strong workforce, reported a $65.6 million net profit. Menon of CIEL believes demand for tech workers will pick up again in the second quarter of next year, after a "much-needed correction" in the industry. It suffered a $575 million net loss in the year ending March 2021, per Bloomberg.
In recent years, researchers have looked for supplements, in particular to data like JOLTS, to provide more nuance about job market dynamics. "When JOLTS came along it was stepping into a data void that it has done a good job of filling. An expanded JOLTS survey may get directly at that and other issues in the future, said Paul R. Calhoun Jr., who was involved with developing the survey in the 1990s and is its current manager. "You got all these job openings," Calhoun said. "We had the unemployment rate, so we knew how many people there are who are looking for work and don't have a job.
A Tesla Model 3 vehicle is on display at the Tesla auto store on September 22, 2022 in Santa Monica, California. The data firm found that Tesla's market share of new registered electric vehicles in the U.S. stood at 65% through the third quarter, down from 71% last year and 79% in 2020. S&P forecasts Tesla's EV market share will decline to less than 20% by 2025, with the number of EV models expected to grow from 48 today to 159 by then. A drop in Tesla's U.S. market share was expected, but the rate of the decline could be concerning for investors in Elon Musk's autos and energy company. "Given that consumer choice and consumer interest in EVs are growing, Tesla's ability to retain a dominant market share will be challenged going forward."
India and China now account for two-thirds of seaborne Russia crude oil exports. As major customers, they are demanding huge discounts from Russia, hitting Kremlin's war chest. India and China now account for about two-thirds of all Russian seaborne crude-oil exports, and as major customers, they are demanding massive discounts for their purchases, Bloomberg's oil strategist Julian Lee wrote on Sunday. That is also why Washington doesn't appear to be too worried about India and China's huge purchase of Russian oil, even if they pay prices above a G7 imposed price cap. Russian oil "is going to be selling at bargain prices and we're happy to have India get that bargain or Africa or China.

One area to which finance chiefs scouting for efficiencies have turned is zero-based budgeting, a tool that gained popularity early in the pandemic and requires finance executives to question and justify each line item in every new budget period. Reese’s peanut-butter cup maker Hershey Co., based in Pennsylvania, regularly goes through every line of its profit and loss statement, Finance Chief Steve Voskuil said. Detroit-based General Motors Co. is slowing and in some areas even freezing hiring, and homing in on other fixed costs, Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson has said. Facing high inflation and an uncertain outlook, finance chiefs are using zero-based budgeting to lower expenses in areas including operations, real estate, logistics, sales and marketing. Finance executives at large U.S. companies, including Coca-Cola Co. and materials-science company Dow Inc., are increasing their foreign-currency hedges and covering longer time periods.
Insider's experts choose the best products and services to help make smart decisions with your money (here’s how). For me and my husband, we use my great-grandfather's savings strategy to build a baseline amount for Christmas presents. Naturally, there are years we go over the amount we have set aside, but coming up with that much in a pinch during the holiday season — forget about it. He also taught us all the true value of spare changeSometimes, those small amounts are what can matter the most. During the COVID shutdown, money was tight (and that's an understatement) — we used every saving lesson we could think of.
Jon Kendle wanted to work in sports so got a summer internship at the NFL Hall of Fame in 2005. Kendle is now the vice president of museum and archives for the Hall and met Tom Brady on the job. I was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I was able to run down to the archives and find Tom Brady's draft card and show it to him. The draft card is just a piece of paper with a name written on it, but it means so much more.

Families are turning to food banks and pantries for support, but many are struggling to meet demand. "Families and food banks are facing a perfect storm," says Stephanie Sullivan of Food Bank for the Heartland. Feeding America's most recent survey found that 60% of US food banks reported an increase in demand. It is one of just six US food banks to have such a facility, which it calls a "huge step" towards fighting food insecurity. After much hesitation, the woman finally paid her local food pantry a visit.
