A Russian fighter jet flew "dangerously close" to a US military drone over Syria, the Air Force said. The Su-35 harassed the MQ-9 Reaper drone by releasing flares in its path, damaging the propeller. It's the latest incident of aggressive Russian aircraft maneuvers over the Middle East. More recently, the Air Force said in mid-July that a Russian aircraft engaged a US MC-12 surveillance plane "in an unsafe and unprofessional manner." The recent engagement is also not the first time that Russian aircraft harassment resulted in damage to a Reaper drone's propeller.

Manufacturing data, inflation data, market breadth, and high rates are warning signals, he says. Among them are fake trenches designed to lure Ukrainians into a death trap, researchers found on a recent Ukraine trip. And while many of the trenches are actual Russian combat positions, others have been traps, researchers learned from front-line Ukrainian forces. They have mine trenches," Kofman said, explaining that they attempt to "lure Ukrainian forces into trenches that have been mined" with remote-activated mines "and then blow up the mines." The possibility that the trench Ukrainian infantry are rushing into might be an explosive trap makes things immensely more difficult. Hendrickson said they have come across extremely complex minefields in which anti-tank mines are protected by anti-personnel mines and other explosives surrounded by booby traps.

But on Tuesday, J & J was ordered to pay $18.8 million after jurors found in favor of 24-year-old Emory Hernandez Valadez who claimed in his lawsuit that he developed mesothelioma, a deadly cancer linked to asbestos, from exposure to J & J talc products. J & J has said that over 60,000 claimants support its latest $8.9 billion settlement to be paid out over 25 years. Johnson & Johnson issued an official statement following the verdict in favor of Valdez, intending to appeal. Even so, J & J got a few of price target increases on Wall Street on Friday. The higher growth pharmaceuticals and medical technology businesses are remaining as the new J & J.

CNN —Former President Barack Obama is staying cool this summer with a summer playlist of 40-plus songs that showcase his eclectic tastes. There are also some repeat artists on the list that Obama was listening to in the summer of 2021 – including the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, SZA, Michael Kiwanuka and Bob Dylan – who show up here with different songs. Obama’s 2023 summer list includes country singer Luke Combs’s cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 classic “Fast Car,” which recently reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, making Chapman the first Black woman to top that chart in its 33-year existence. Obama traditionally releases these wide-ranging playlists for the summer, holidays and even for some workout motivation.

HONG KONG, July 20 (Reuters) - Hong Kong national security police on Thursday questioned the brother of exiled former lawmaker Dennis Kwok, media reported, weeks after police issued an arrest warrant and a HK$1 million bounty for the pro-democracy politician. Police on July 3 issued arrest warrants for eight overseas-based activists for national security offences, including foreign collusion and incitement to secession, and posted bounties for information leading to their arrest. Among the eight is Dennis Kwok, a former pro-democracy member of Hong Kong's legislature now based in the United States. Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula meant to guarantee its freedoms for 50 years. In 2020, after months of protests, China imposed a national security law on the financial hub criminalising offences like subversion with up to life imprisonment.

A recent study by RentHop may help New York City renters avoid neighborhoods where mold runs rampant. Overall, mold complaints from New York renters rose to 27,164 in 2022, up from 23,056 in 2017. But as renters returned in 2021, so did mold complaints. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, September 2021 had the most mold complaints of all the months counted. According to Renthop, New York City’s humidity and warmer temperatures in past years contributed to the growth of mold.

More Americans disagree with legacy admissionsToday, fewer Americans agree with legacy admissions. "This preferential treatment overwhelmingly goes to white applicants and harms efforts to diversify color," added Michael Kippins, litigation fellow at Lawyers for Civil Rights. The NAACP called on more than 1,600 U.S. public and private colleges and universities to commit to increasing the representation of historically underrepresented students and end the practice of legacy admissions. The reality is we've reached a pretty good consensus on the use of identity in college admissions. Legacy admissions 'could be deemed unconstitutional'Since the practice of legacy admissions has indirect racial implications, these challenges may have legal merit, according to Jeanine Conley Daves, an attorney at New York-based firm Littler.

The jury ruled in favor of Emory Hernandez Valadez, who filed suit last year in California state court in Oakland against J&J, seeking monetary damages. The six-week trial was the first over talc that New Brunswick, New Jersey-based J&J has faced in almost two years. Hernandez will not be able to collect the judgment in the foreseeable future, thanks to a bankruptcy court order freezing most litigation over J&J's talc. Jurors heard from Hernandez's mother, Anna Camacho, who said she used large amounts of J&J's baby powder on her son when he was a baby and through childhood. Tens of thousands of plaintiffs have sued, alleging that J&J's baby powder and other talc products sometimes contained asbestos and caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma.

Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $18 million to a man who said he got cancer from baby powder. But these cases are on hold after LTL Management, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, filed for bankruptcy in April. The six-week trial for Valdez's case was the exception, and is the first in two years involving these allegations against Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson stopped selling talc-based baby powder in 2020, offering a cornstarch-based version instead. Lawyers for Valadez and Johnson & Johnson did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.

Guterres said that he’d sent Russia proposals to keep the grain deal alive but that he was “deeply disappointed” that his efforts went unheeded. The UN chief’s comments reinforced a view that, for now, Russia sees a point of leverage in refusing to renew the Black Sea grain deal. Erdogan won prestige and the gratitude of his fellow NATO leaders and developing nations for brokering the original grain deal. So it may risk damaging its own priorities by triggering widespread food shortages, especially since much of Ukraine’s grain is used in World Food Programs to alleviate famine in Africa. While the end of the grain deal would cause significant global hardship, its worst effects may be weeks away – so there could be time for diplomacy to work.

CNN —The bond and stock markets are finally seeing eye to eye when it comes to the Federal Reserve. Stocks and the 10-year Treasury’s real yield have begun moving inversely again, according to a research note from Morgan Stanley. That’s a reversal from earlier this year, when yields and stocks both moved higher. A concurrent rally both in bond yields and stocks is atypical. The Consumer Price Index report for June showed that annual inflation slowed to 3%, marking its lowest rate since March 2021.

Plus, falling inflation means weaker pricing power, and therefore weaker revenue growth, Kantrowitz said. If you look at long-term earnings growth, we're sitting near record-low levels. Long-term growth expectations, shown in gray, are near all-time lows. The PEG ratio takes into account longer-term future earnings, as opposed to the more present-based price-to-earnings ratio. “We have put to rest any doubts and ambiguities about whether Ukraine will be in NATO,” he said. “It will!”The Ukrainian military’s Strategic Communications Department also posted a lengthy Twitter thread listing positive outcomes from the summit. In return, requests that were initially rebuffed — including Western battle tanks, missile systems, even training for F-16 fighter jets — have over time been met. The campaign is in its second month, and Mr. Zelensky has acknowledged that it is moving more slowly than some allies had hoped. But he warned that Ukraine may not hold a significant advantage in that type of strategy against the more numerous Russian forces.
