But the portrayal of trans women as predators was a new innovation that had a huge impact on the horror genre. Andit had a big impact on Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs” in which the terrifying serial killer, Buffalo Bill, is a predatory trans woman (or more precisely, as Jos Truitt has explained, Bill is a transphobic caricature of a trans woman). The danger isn’t from trans women — it’s from heterosexual cis patriarchs — a reality much truer to life than Hitchcock’s fever dream. Perhaps in part for that reason, the director is careful not to make Longlegs trans or gay. It’s not just “Longlegs” which displaces violence onto queer people: Movies like “Psycho” and “Silence of the Lambs” are often acts of aggression aimed by male directors at queer people (and especially at queer women).

Sadly, that victim identity was only reinforced in the mid-2010s, when Duvall appeared on an episode of “Dr. Phil” episode with a ratings-bait title, the then 67-year-old actress made confusing claims and was apparently struggling with her mental health. It was buoyed, however, by Duvall, whose unique charm and childlike whimsy as host and presenter of each tale was the perfect fairy dust. “We look at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby, (because) he was still alive,” Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory said this week. New York CNN —If you were an AT&T cellphone customer in 2022, your call data was possibly breached to bad actors. AT&T said Friday that data was breached from “nearly all” of its cellular customers and the customers of wireless providers that used its network between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022. The records of a “very small number” of customers from January 2, 2023, were also breached, AT&T said. What they did get is metadata — call logs that contain a record of every number AT&T customers called or texted (including customers of other wireless networks), the number of times they interacted and the call duration. I predicted last weekend that the Democrats will find a way to jettison Joe Biden; that likelihood seems to fluctuate daily or even hourly, but for now my prediction stands. Because it is so obvious to me, I had long assumed the Democratic Party would consider it equally obvious. But it is no longer clear to me that the party’s elected officials actually share that assumption. But to the extent that goal conflicts with other, more mundane imperatives, more than a few Democrats seem to view beating Trump as a secondary objective. I wrote about this in the context of Biden’s “save democracy, vote Democrat” rhetoric before the 2022 midterms, but clearly the point merits new elaboration.

The launch vehicle carried 20 satellites for SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already operates via more than 6,000 satellites that have been deployed via dozens of launches. “During tonight’s Falcon 9 launch of Starlink, the second stage engine did not complete its second burn. As a result, the Starlink satellites were deployed into a lower than intended orbit,” according to a statement from SpaceX. Musk added that the Starlink satellites were deployed into orbit, but they may be too near Earth to remain there for long. It’s not clear what this mishap means for the future of SpaceX’s Falcon 9.

Stubborn inflation is taking a toll on the nation’s largest banks. On Friday, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo released earnings that were stuttered with indications that despite recent signs of cooling inflation, the economy continues to be a drag. The bank reported profit of $4.9 billion, down slightly from a year earlier, on revenue of $20.7 billion, up 1 percent from last year. On one hand, the nation’s largest bank pulled in $13.1 billion in profit, but it concurrently disclosed more than half a billion dollars in losses from having to offload sinking mortgage investments, among others. Overall results were bolstered by its investment banking and trading business, and a one time windfall from the sale of shares in Visa.

On Thursday, Hallmark said it would introduce a stand-alone streaming service. It will be called Hallmark+ and arrive in September for $8 a month. If Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” was a twist on the centuries-old Gothic horror genre, there was no one better suited to play a modern Gothic heroine than Shelley Duvall. Duvall, who died Thursday at 75, was in her late 20s when she shot the role of Wendy Torrance, put-upon wife of blocked writer Jack (Jack Nicholson). The pair have holed up with their young son in the Overlook Hotel, working as winter caretakers. Wendy is virtually trapped there, a small woman often alone in a rambling, dangerous building full of secrets. The Gothic heroine, the woman trapped in the menacing haunted home, must exhibit courage in the face of danger, remaining resolute while also being susceptible to the evil that lurks around every corner.
