Read previewConsumers could end up paying the (personalized) price as AI becomes more popular, FTC Chair Lina Khan recently warned. Khan said that dynamic pricing, while a separate pricing strategy, may have helped price targeting become more prevalent as people become increasingly used to encountering it. Dynamic pricing itself has already proven controversial in some areas. Wendy's received major heat from customers after announcing plans to introduce dynamic pricing and AI-enabled menu changes as early as 2025. Later, the fast-food chain clarified that its dynamic pricing would not raise prices but rather only provide discounts.

Some young people are splashing out on luxuries like travel and designer clothes instead of saving, in a trend that's being characterized as "doom spending" on social media. Doom spending is when a person mindlessly shops to self-soothe because they feel pessimistic about the economy and their future, according to Psychology Today. It's happening because young people are chronically online and feel like they're constantly receiving "bad news," she said. These young people are then translating these bad feelings into bad spending habits, Baeckström added. And Fernández said she's not alone in doom spending.

CNN —A Pennsylvania health care system this month agreed to pay $65 million to victims of a February 2023 ransomware attack after hackers posted nude photos of cancer patients online, according to the victims’ lawyers. Eighty percent of the $65-million settlement is set aside for victims whose nude photos were published online. The ransomware attack “was limited to the network supporting one physician practice located in Lackawanna County,” the Lehigh statement continued. A February ransomware attack on a major health insurance billing firm cut off health providers from billions of dollars and put some health clinics on the brink of bankruptcy. A full-scale ransomware attack on a health care provider has many costs aside from potential lawsuits, from rebuilding computer systems to retaining legal counsel, Henderson said.

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesIndia's commerce minister rejected the idea of joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world's largest trade deal, maintaining that it is not in the country's interest to be part of a free trade agreement with China. Negotiations for the RCEP started in 2013 and initially included India, which some members viewed as a counterbalance to China. However, in 2019, India chose not to join RCEP, citing unresolved "core interest" issues. Goyal noted that at that time, India already had a free trade agreement with ASEAN, Japan and Korea, as well as a bilateral trade with New Zealand worth $300 million. "It was not in our farmers' interest, RCEP did not reflect the aspirations of our small and micro medium industries and sector, and in some form, was nothing but a free trade agreement with China," he said.

In the flood of election polls you’ll see over the next few weeks, most polling groups will include responses from “likely voters.” And often from nobody else. In theory, these poll numbers should yield more accurate results, since the people who actually vote are the ones who dictate the outcome on Election Day. After all, how exactly can a pollster know who is “likely” to vote, and who therefore will be the focus of their results? The choices they make are important, because the results of likely-voter polls can differ from those that sample a wider population, such as everyone who is registered to vote. In a close race like this year’s presidential contest, one candidate might lead in a poll among likely voters, while another might lead in the same poll’s tally of registered voters.
The Biden administration has raised serious concerns about the collection of data by Chinese companies on U.S. drivers and infrastructure through connected vehicles as well as about potential foreign manipulation of vehicles connected to the internet and navigation systems. The planned regulation, first reported by Reuters, would also force American and other major automakers in the coming years to remove key Chinese software and hardware from vehicles in the United States. The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday proposed prohibiting key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads due to national security concerns - a move that would effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars from entering the U.S. market. The move is a significant escalation in the United States' ongoing restrictions on Chinese vehicles, software and components. The rules would apply to all on-road vehicles but exclude agricultural or mining vehicles not used on public roads.

Longtime value investor Bill Nygren warned that the popular benchmark S & P 500 is not as diversified as it used to be, and he is picking cheap stocks outside the dominant tech sector. Nygren, portfolio manager at Oakmark Funds for 40 years, said the technology sector has grown so powerful in the S & P 500 that the 25 or so largest names make up about half the investment. "It's not nearly as diversified as investors think it is. I think we will see investors revisit the idea of the S & P 500 being kind of the low-risk way to invest in equities," Nygren said on CNBC's " Money Movers " on Monday. "It's become so important to us that we invest with companies that are taking matters into their own hands and using excess capital to repurchase their own stock," Nygren said.
