The theme of the next Met Gala has been unveiled: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed the theme of its spring 2024 exhibit, which is launched by the huge party known as the Met Gala, on Wednesday. The “sleeping beauties” referred to in the title of the show are actually treasured garments in the museum’s collection that are so fragile, they need to be housed in special glass “coffins,” curators said. Garments will be displayed in a series of galleries organized by themes of nature. Curator Andrew Bolton, who masterminds all the Met Gala exhibits, explained that the show includes both rare historical garments and corresponding contemporary fashions. Retailers, including Walmart and Amazon, lose millions of dollars to refund fraud schemes. AdvertisementAdvertisementA coordinated refund fraud scheme has cost online retailers like Walmart and Amazon millions, according to Federal prosecutors. If the retailer provided a no-return refund, ARG would take a percentage cut, and the customer would keep the item. Retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target sometimes offer no-return refunds when the cost of the return outweighs the value to the seller. 404 Media also found numerous Reddit and Telegram groups openly swapping tips on perpetrating refund fraud, with specific advice for individual retailers.

Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft called for users to be held responsible for the way they interact with generative AI tools, according to their comments to the US Copyright Office made accessible to the public last week. The USCO is considering new rules on AI and the tech industry's use of owned content to train the large language models underlying generative AI tools. Holding developers responsible for the copyrighted training data making their AI tools tick is akin to holding photocopiers and audio or video recorders responsible for infringement, Google argued. It said a generative AI tool is, like a camera, a "general purpose tool." "In evaluating claims of infringement relating to outputs, the analysis starts with the user," OpenAI wrote.

The institutional investors plying Britain's venture capital sector with cash have a penchant for backing funds owned entirely by men. All-male-owned firms raised 10 times more capital than funds owned by their female counterparts between 2017 and 2023, according to a report by impact fund Ada Ventures. A similar disparity was found among mixed-gender funds, which raised almost five times less than the male-owned funds. Those firms raised around 6.6 billion pounds during that period. Venture capital's diversity issues are well documented but there has been a slew of women leaving the industry this year.

So by the end of the day, sleep pressure is strong, your circadian rhythm is telling you it’s time for sleep and your environment is cozy and comfortable. Instead of having more than 16 hours of wakefulness behind you, you have just woken up and therefore have less sleep pressure. They start with light sleep, progress to deep sleep and then end with light sleep again. It might be easier to fall asleep on the couch, where there is less stress involved. This will ensure all the sleep pressure you build up during the day will be directed toward a deep sleep in your bed.

It’s a great time to be rich in New York City. Everyday life is increasingly unaffordable for most New Yorkers, but a new class of private, members-only and concierge services is emerging as a kind of gated community within the city. It all adds up to a city where the adages about New Yorkers of all backgrounds living and working shoulder to shoulder might now come with an asterisk. The rich have long sought to avoid the inconveniences baked into city life. Even the mayor’s favorite haunt is a members-only club.

To the Editor:Re “The Five-Day Office Week Is Over,” by Nicholas Bloom (Opinion guest essay, Oct. 22):Mr. Bloom writes that Americans work about one-third of their workdays at home and that remote work has become normal. He names benefits: savings of time and money spent getting to work and flexibility for parents. But this is true only for a fraction of Americans; many essential kinds of work cannot be done remotely as effectively or at all. Economic and status hierarchies that pervade our society are widened by the sharp divide between those who can do their work remotely and those who cannot. As helpful as Zoom is, it is no substitute for being in spaces with others across the day.

His experiences on dating apps were positive, he said, and he valued the ways they introduced him to new people and new experiences. Dating apps know this. For all their flaws, dating apps are unlikely to disappear any time soon.

Two experts explain how long it could take until fusion power plants are possible. Fusion plants could theoretically produce almost 4 million times as much energy as burning coal or oil — with none of the carbon emissions. It's what Andrew Christlieb, who is part of a US Department of Energy fusion project at Michigan State University, calls "step zero." The US Department of Energy's Fusion Energy Sciences program has a $763 million budget for 2023, which could grow to over $1 billion next year. Achieving commercial fusion power in two decades won't be quick enough to address many countries' goals of adapting clean energy and limiting global warming by 2035.
