Late last year, Meta (META) launched a service called “Subscription for no ads,” allowing European users of Facebook and Instagram to pay up to €12.99 ($14) a month for ad-free versions. Götene, about 200 miles from Stockholm, is selling plots of land starting at 1 krona per square meter or nine US cents per 10 square feet. Buyers must build a home on the land with plans to either live there permanently or use it as a vacation property, according to CNN. The plots being put up for sale had been on the market for many years, Månsson said. Since the town launched the scheme in May, it has received thousands of requests and the government has decided to pause buying until early August so they can fine-tune the process. CNN reports that when Götene starts selling off land again, it is likely there will be a bidding process instead of just selling the plots at that low price of 1 krona per square meter.

The Youngest Pandemic Children Are Now in School, and StrugglingThe pandemic’s babies, toddlers and preschoolers are now school-age, and the impact on them is becoming increasingly clear: Many are showing signs of being academically and developmentally behind. But the impact on the youngest children is in some ways surprising: They were not in formal school when the pandemic began, and at an age when children spend a lot of time at home anyway. Researchers said several aspects of the pandemic affected young children — parental stress, less exposure to people, lower preschool attendance, more time on screens and less time playing. The youngest students’ performance is “in stark contrast” to older elementary school children, who have caught up much more, the researchers said. Sarrah Hovis, a preschool teacher in Roseville, Mich., has seen plenty of the pandemic’s impact in her classroom.

New York CNN —Boeing has agreed to buy Spirit Aerosystems, one of its major suppliers and manufacturing partners, as part of its plan to overhaul the aircraft maker’s badly damaged safety reputation. Boeing in March announced its intention to buy Spirit, saying recombining the companies would boost safety. Spirit AeroSystems makes major parts of several Boeing models, including the fuselages for the 737 Max. The company also makes parts for Boeing’s rival Airbus, although Boeing is Spirit’s largest customer. The first group of employees removed the door plug to address problems with rivets that were made by Spirit AeroSystems.

London CNN —A set of 19th-century drawings by a teenage Queen Victoria will be put up for auction in London next week. An ink drawing by Queen Victoria, titled "A seated woman with a crown and sash" and dated 1838, is inscribed "by Her Majesty." George Hayter also gave the Queen drawing lessons, and Russell believes these drawings show his influence “quite closely”. The auction house has previously sold other works by royal artists, including a painting by Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Victoria, which fetched £4,198 (around $5,320) last year. The Royal Collection Trust, which looks after the royal family’s art collection, has more than 4,000 works by Queen Victoria, spanning 64 years of her life.

One solution is synthetic data, which is artificially generated rather than collected from the real world, and can easily be generated by machine learning algorithms. OpenAI has considered synthetic data as an option to train its models, but CEO Sam Altman has raised concerns about producing quality data. "As long as you can get over the synthetic data event horizon, where the model is smart enough to make good synthetic data, everything will be fine," Altman said at a tech conference in May 2023.
