I was staying in a friend’s mother’s guest room in Beverly Hills. I had just gone through a big breakup — a falling out with my best friend, which felt like a worse kind of heartache. On one of our last good days, we both auditioned to play a girl with such debilitating acne that she was canceling plans with her friends. And soon she was canceling plans with me. She was late to the monthly comedy show we did together, coming from an influential birthday party I wasn’t invited to.

A series of political scandals has rocked Singapore in recent weeks, from corruption probes to inappropriate relationships among politicians. These challenges have affected the ruling party as well as the largest opposition party. Shortly after the Ridout saga, Singapore Transport Minister S Iswaran and hotel tycoon Ong Beng Seng — known for bringing Formula One races to the city-state — were arrested as part of a corruption probe. Felix Tan, a political analyst in Singapore, explained the brouhaha over the recent scandals: "[Singapore is] almost a perfect exemplar for all countries to be. Rudy Giuliani, former lawyer to Donald Trump, speaks to members of the media as he leaves federal court in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, May 19, 2023. Rudy Giuliani conceded in a court filing Tuesday that he made "false" statements about two Georgia 2020 election workers who are suing him over baseless claims of fraud that he made against them. "Defendant Giuliani, for the purposes of litigation only, does not contest that, to the extent the statements were statements of fact and other wise actionable, such actionable factual statements were false," Giuliani wrote in a signed stipulation that he said was intended to "avoid unnecessary expenses in litigating what he believes to be unnecessary disputes." Giuliani had claimed that Freeman and Moss were "passing around USB ports like they were vials of heroin or cocaine." The filing by Giuliani comes after Georgia's State Election Board last month dismissed its yearslong investigation into alleged election fraud at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, clearing Freeman and Moss of wrongdoing.

CNN —A pair of rambunctious young stars takes center stage in a new near-infrared image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope’s capabilities allow it to peer through an otherwise obscuring nebula, filled with gas and dust, that surrounds the stars. The Webb image also showcases a variety of stars and galaxies around and behind the nebula. The two stars will ultimately finish forming over millions of years, and the brilliantly hued features in the Webb image will diminish as the binary star pair brightens. The space telescope’s peek at this critical moment in the stellar life cycle will allow astronomers to understand more details about how stars form and evolve over time.

Despite a softer-than-expected second quarter, IMAX screens should still reach the full-year expectation of $1.1 billion in the global box office, Mejias said. That's driven in part by the strength of "Oppenheimer," which drove consumers to IMAX screens over the weekend. The pairing, which included Warner Bros. "Barbie," helped drive the fourth highest grossing box office weekend ever, according to Comscore. With the Chinese box office activity returning, the company could reach pre-pandemic business levels by 2024, Mejias said. "We believe the continued over-indexing of IMAX screens in the post-pandemic moviegoing environment provides evidence of a structural improvement of consumer demand toward the format."

Shares of Spotify fell 7% in premarket trading Tuesday after the company released second-quarter results that missed analysts' estimates for revenue and offered weaker-than-expected guidance. The company said it expects to report total revenue of 3.3 billion euros for its third quarter, down from the 3.4 billion euros expected by analysts according to StreetAccount. It had also expected a revenue of 3.2 billion euros and to post 217 million paid subscribers in the quarter. Spotify posted a net loss of 302 million euros, an increase from the 125 million-euro loss it posted in the year-ago quarter. July 24 (Reuters) - Spotify Technology (SPOT.N) on Monday raised prices for its premium plans across several countries including the United States and United Kingdom, as the music-streaming company looks to boost profitability in an uncertain economy. The move will result in a $1 price increase for Spotify's U.S. plans, with the premium single now starting at $10.99, duo at $14.99, family at $16.99 and the student plan at $5.99. The price increases come at a time when streaming services, both audio and video, are under rising investor pressure to boost profitability after years of prioritizing user growth. Rivals services from Apple (AAPL.O) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and Tidal have all increased prices this year, while YouTube also hiked prices last week on its monthly and annual premium plans in the U.S. for the first time since the subscription service was launched in 2018. Spotify, which had indicated in April that it would raise prices in 2023, had also raised prices in 46 countries last year.

July 24 (Reuters) - Spotify Technology (SPOT.N) said on Monday it was raising the prices for its premium plans by $1 each in the United States, as the music streaming company looks to boost profitability in an uncertain economy. In Greta Gerwig’s Barbieland, where every day is the best day ever, pop stars like Lizzo, Dua Lipa and Charli XCX provide a bouncy soundtrack as the live-action dolls go about their cheery, blissful lives. “There’s more than one answer to these questions, pointing me in a crooked line,” she sings with a smile, before thrusting a manicured pointer in the air. Barbie’s song of choice on her way to the Real World is the Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine.”The Indigo Girls, a folk duo from Georgia who have released 15 studio albums since 1987, featured “Closer to Fine” as the opening track on their self-titled 1989 LP. Emily Saliers wrote the song after she and her fellow singer and guitarist, Amy Ray, graduated from Emory University in Atlanta and were regularly playing a local bar called Little Five Points. It became a staple of the Girls’ live show that spread thanks to college radio play and an opening slot on tour with another Georgia band, R.E.M.

Already, it was the biggest weekend haul in North America since 2019, and the fourth-largest ever, before adjusting for inflation. The weekend was also noteworthy for its variety, with “Barbie” collecting $162 million, “Oppenheimer” $82.4 million and the rest of the features, including “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Sound of Freedom,” adding nearly $70 million. Typically, the biggest weekends for domestic ticket sales have been dominated by a single blockbuster. During the highest grossing weekend, in April 2019, “Avengers: Endgame” accounted for nearly 90 percent of the box office. “Barbie,” by comparison, accounted for just over half of the box office over the weekend.

BUDAPEST, July 21 (Reuters) - Red Bull boss Christian Horner hit back at Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on Friday for suggesting his dominant team got off lightly last year for a breach of Formula One's cost cap. "Believe me, the hit that we’ve taken with the lack of wind tunnel time that we have compared to our competitors is a massive compromise," Horner told Sky Sports television. Mercedes won an unprecedented eight constructors' titles in a row until the rules changed for 2022, with Red Bull dominant since then. "I’m just incredibly proud of the job that our team’s doing with the constraints and handicap that we have," said Horner. "To be performing at the level we have this year, to have achieved 11 straight victories...it’s been an outstanding achievement."

Hundreds of protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in central Baghdad early on Thursday, scaling its walls and setting it ablaze in protest against the expected burning of a Quran in Sweden. Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said embassy staff were safe but that Iraqi authorities had failed in their responsibility to protect the embassy in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
