The so-called Magnificent Seven group of stocks, which rose together for most of 2023, are starting to break-up this earnings season. The Magnificent Seven constituents (Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, and Tesla) have been the main performance drivers in the S & P 500 index all year. The super-duper seven have added almost $4 trillion in market cap in 2023 alone while collectively as a group contributed roughly 90% of the S & P 500's 2023 gain. I want to focus on one of the high-flying Magnificent Seven names: Tesla . Using the SPDR S & P 500 ETF (SPY) , traders saw the 200-day violated at $422 and Relative Strength Indicator levels have now been slammed into oversold territory.

Unlike the reaction to similarly decent results from some of its Big Tech peers this week, shares in the online retail giant Amazon climbed 5% after hours. And both Nasdaq and S&P500 futures were set to bounce into the weekend later after the cash markets closed at their lowest since May. With nominal U.S. growth running at close to 8%, depending on which inflation gauge you use, the heat is impressive. And even the racy headline GDP growth rate was below many assumptions of a 5%-plus print. That bond relief has perhaps flattered the overnight stocks bounce - although on aggregate the earnings season is pretty decent too.

REUTERS/Gabriel Crossley/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Profits at China's industrial firms extended gains for a second month in September, adding to signs of a stabilising economy as the authorities launched a burst of supportive policy measures. For the first nine months, profits slid 9% from a year earlier, narrowing from a 11.7% decline in the first eight months, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Friday. A fall in producer prices last month indicated that some industrial firms were still cutting prices to promote sales, putting a drag on overall industrial revenues and profits, Zhou said. The improvement in industrial profits is expected to sustain in the coming months, partly due to the lag effect in domestic macro pump-priming, he added. Industrial profit numbers cover firms with annual revenues of at least 20 million yuan ($2.73 million) from their main operations.

Analysis: Yen comeback may be a longer waiting game
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( Tom Westbrook | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
One result is an uneasy calm in spot and options markets for dollar/yen as traders give up waiting for the yen to bounce. Driven weaker by the widening gap between U.S. and Japanese interest rates, the yen has lost 13% on the dollar this year and at 150 is near the three-decade low of 151.94 that prompted government intervention a year ago. Market participants say what's changed is the expectation that Japan would be in the driver's seat for the yen this year. Yet together with the risk of intervention, it only seems to have stopped the yen from falling, rather than driving the sort of rally investors had been girding for at the outset of 2023. To be sure, Sachdev said interest in 'carry trades' - borrowing yen to sell for higher-interest paying currencies is waning, while investors have been keen for long exposure to yen assets.

LIN YTD mountain Linde YTD Bottom line Industrial gas giant Linde (LIN) delivered the kind of quarter we've come to expect: Double-digit earnings growth and a lift to its profit guidance. While the top-line sales figure was light, Linde's strong operating margin expansion in the quarter more than made up for it. In good economic times and bad, Linde's model of continued margin expansion with project growth has enabled earnings per share growth of at least 10% annually. That means the current backlog of $4.5 billion should be worth a few percentage points of earnings growth next year. Linde sees fourth-quarter earnings per share falling to between $3.38 and $3.48, compared with the $3.46 consensus estimate from analysts.

Eventually, he invites Priscilla to visit him, only to knock her out for two days with insomnia meds and then whisk her to Las Vegas, where, in a montage of gambling and boozing, Coppola shows Priscilla start to extend her hand for pills herself. For Priscilla, living with Elvis means living with his entourage. Coppola frames a shot of the actress looking out Graceland’s windows as if Priscilla were a Douglas Sirk heroine, trapped. It also brings “Priscilla” closer to Coppola’s aesthetic, freeing her from the literalism of a conventional biopic. The opening credits, which show Priscilla setting foot on a plush carpet and prepping her makeup, bounce along to a 1980 Ramones song.

Alphabet's earnings sailed past Wall Street estimates after the markets closed on Tuesday. In Alphabet's earnings report, Wall Street fretted over the numbers out of the Google Cloud division, which is investing heavily to try and catch Amazon and Microsoft , particularly when it comes to managing hefty artificial intelligence workloads. The concern from Facebook parent Meta was sparked by comments that CFO Susan Li provided on the earnings call regarding the advertising market in the fourth quarter. Alphabet shares are down by about 12% over the past two days, while Meta has dropped roughly 7%. In emphasizing the potential business impact of war in the Middle East on its business, Meta spelled out those concerns to shareholders.

HONG KONG, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's efforts to revive its shrinking stock market are mere stopgap solutions, as analysts say a reversal in fortunes for Asia's premier financial hub would not be possible without a major improvement in China's economic prospects. NEW YORK (AP) — The first thought that comes to mind when you enter the Balloon Museum for the “Let’s Fly” exhibit is the massive scale of the art. London CNN —Three months ago, CAB Payments stumbled when it went public on the London Stock Exchange, its shares falling nearly 10% on their first day of trading on a market that has been starved recently of new listings. In a statement on Tuesday, CAB Payments said that it expects revenue this year would likely come in 17% below its previous guidance but still 20% up on 2022. The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

Oct 25 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. Upbeat U.S. economic data often fuels Fed rate hike expectations, dragging stocks and other asset markets lower. In Asia on Wednesday, South Korea's LG Display is expected to show a fall in quarterly revenue when it reports results. On the economic data front, annual consumer inflation in Australia is expected to slow to 5.3% in the third quarter from 6.0% in the April-June period. The Australian dollar liked what it heard, bucked the global trend of widespread weakness against the U.S. dollar, and goes into the inflation data on the front foot around $0.6360.

A panic spike could send stocks higher heading into November, according to Bank of America. Notably, the S & P 500 closed below its 200-day moving average, suggesting a break in the uptrend, and drew near a key psychological support level at 4,200. Bank of America's Stephen Suttmeier said the CBOE 3-Month Volatility Index (VIX3M) and the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) could flash an oversold reading below 1.0 as the S & P 500 nears its support levels, a possible capitulation signal indicating it's time for investors to buy. Regardless, Bank of America broadly anticipates the S & P 500 will close the year out at 4,600, according to the CNBC Market Strategist Survey . "In our view, this tactical panic likely coincides with a break below the 200-day MA at 4233 (SPX closed below it on 10/20) and the "FOMO rally / soft-landing" breakout point near 4200 on the SPX," Suttmeier added.

Pre-election polls suggested that Swiss voters had three main concerns: Rising fees for the obligatory, free market-based health insurance system; climate change, which has eroded Switzerland’s many glaciers; and worries about migrants and immigration. The Socialists, in second, added two seats to reach 41 in that chamber, known as the National Council. In Switzerland, voters also participate directly in government decision making. The Swiss did line up with the EU in imposing sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.
