Ron DeSantis of Florida has for the last year received in-depth profile treatment from the media amid speculation that he'll seek the White House in 2024. That portrait, says Phil Cox, senior advisor to the DeSantis gubernatorial campaign, is "bullshit" and "a total fabrication." Cox said DeSantis "has a good sense of humor and cares about people." "Ron's strength as a politician is that he doesn't give a fuck," the New Yorker article said. "Republican voters love him because he says what he's going to do and he goes and does it," Cox said.
Shares of News Corp. rose while Fox shares fell Monday as investors weighed the possibility of Rupert Murdoch's media companies recombining nearly decade after they split. The companies had announced Friday that they were exploring a merger, with each News Corp. and Fox saying they formed special committees to explore the possibility. News Corp. has a market capitalization of around $9.45 billion, while Fox Corp. is worth about $14.76 billion. Alphabet has a market cap of $1.32 trillion, Apple's market cap is $2.29 trillion and Amazon's market cap is $1.15 trillion. The source said Irenic would oppose the combination of News Corp. with Fox if the real estate arm remained undervalued.
Fox 's potential reunification with News Corporation could actually be a set back from the stock's value, Credit Suisse warned. He said the potential combination of Fox and News Corp. would be a bad investment — and even just the idea could hurt the stock. "The pivot seems a tacit admission of challenges for Fox," he said in a Sunday note to clients. "Even if this merger does not ultimately come to fruition, the investment backdrop for Fox has been altered." He said a stock merger could take place, or one could rein if there's a perceived discount involved.

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rupert Murdoch is seeking to stitch his empire back together again. The media mogul’s family trust wants to reunite News Corp (NWSA.O) and Fox (FOXA.O) almost a decade after they split. The boards of News Corp and Fox said Friday they had formed special independent committees to explore a potential merger. Rupert Murdoch and his family trust control approximately 42% of voting shares in Fox and 39% of voting shares in News Corp. The companies split in 2013.
Oct 14 (Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch started a process that could reunite his media empire, News Corp (NWSA.O) and Fox Corp (FOXA.O) disclosed on Friday, saying they would consider combining at his behest, nearly a decade after the companies split. If a deal goes through, the combination will allow Murdoch greater control over his media assets and help the companies trim costs. Media companies are fighting decades-low growth in advertising sales and for users' attention against deep-pocketed social media and content websites. It make sense, in this context, to reunite Fox and News Corp to create a company with complementary assets and greater scale, the person familiar with the proposal said. His son Lachlan Murdoch is chairman and CEO of Fox Corp.As of market-close on Friday, News Corp had a market cap of $9.31 billion and Fox Corp was $16.84 billion, according to Refinitiv.

Powerball's jackpot is an advertised $420 million for Wednesday night's drawing. Mega Millions' top prize is even more: $494 million for the next pull, set for Friday night. Of course, the chance of a single ticket matching all six numbers drawn in either game is tiny: 1 in 292 million for Powerball and 1 in 302 million for Mega Millions. Nevertheless, it's worth giving thought to what you'd do if you were to beat the odds and land such a windfall. The process of figuring out how to handle a huge amount of money can take several months, Stanzak said.

The U.S. Treasury Department imposed two enforcement actions with fines totaling $53 million against cryptocurrency exchange Bittrex Inc. for alleged violations of sanctions and anti-money-laundering laws, the agency said Tuesday. The Treasury said Tuesday’s actions highlight the importance of crypto firms maintaining risk-based sanctions and anti-money-laundering compliance programs, and that noncompliance with these requirements can result in enforcement actions and exposure to potential abuse by illicit actors. Blackstone’s Schwarzman kickstarts UK asset grab

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Britain’s currency crisis may have an upside after all – at least for foreign investors. Blackstone’s (BX.N) Steve Schwarzman is paying 80 million pounds for 17th-century country estate Conholt Park, the City A.M. newspaper reported. But it’s exactly the kind of purchase that will make more sense the lower the pound goes. And to the extent that future cash flows are denominated in dollars or euros, the sterling purchase price should rise. U.S. investors just bought Chelsea soccer club, while Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund last year swooped on rival Newcastle United.

A destroyed Russian tank is seen as Ukrainian serviceman rides a tractor and tows a Russian military vehicle, amid Russia's invasion on Ukraine, near the village of Dolyna in Kharkiv region, Ukraine September 23, 2022. Russia, meanwhile, pressed on with its call-up of hundreds of thousands of men to throw into the seven-month war, seeking to reverse its recent losses. The Russian mobilization — its first such call-up since World War II — is sparking protests in Russian cities, with fresh demonstrations Sunday. It is also opening splits in Europe about whether fighting-age Russian men fleeing in droves should be welcomed or turned away. For Ukrainian and Russian military planners, the clock is ticking, with the approach of winter expected to make fighting more complicated.
That's good news for residents of several states, according to a new U.S. News and World Report analysis, which ranked all 50 states according to how polluted they are and the risk that pollution poses to their population's health. That ranking is consistent with other 2022 analyses: The American Lung Association (ALA) says Vermont's cities are among the cleanest by air quality in the country, and have low levels of the most harmful and widespread types of air pollution. The state's Burlington-South metro area in particular is one of only two U.S. cities that rank as the cleanest for the worst types of air pollution, which include particle pollution and ozone air pollution. In 2022, the ALA said the state's air quality got "mixed grades." Several pieces of research point to the state's poor air quality.

Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. A Texas sheriff announced on Monday that he is opening a criminal investigation into the transport of migrants to Martha's Vineyard, saying they were "lured" with "promises of a better life." DeSantis had suggested in November that he could send migrants to Biden's home state of Delaware. Newsweek reportered on Tuesday that the same aircraft that flew migrants to Martha's Vineyard is bound for Delaware Coastal Airport in Sussex County, Delaware, "though there is no evidence at this time that migrants will be on board." Last week, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas tweeted "Rehoboth Beach, Delaware next" and tagged Abbott and DeSantis.
The company’s lawyers will also depose Musk lieutenant Jared Birchall and lawyer Alex Spiro in the coming days, Tuesday filings show. News of the deposition plans comes as Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey is set to be deposed Tuesday by lawyers for the company and Musk. The new depositions are the latest sign that the legal battle between Musk and Twitter (TWTR) is heating up. The judge overseeing the acquisition dispute has ruled that Musk could add to his claims based on Zatko’s disclosure. Twitter has also subpoenaed Musk and a number of his associates as part of its case.
This piece has been adapted from "American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy,” by David Corn. Some reporters feared Goldwater supporters were about to storm the stage and physically attack the governor. The Republican Party — those then in control of it — thought otherwise. They were guided by what Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway once called “alternative facts.” For many of the Capitol Hill assailants, Trump and his paranoia had become a theology. At the time, the former president's spokesperson claimed to Vice that it was not a QAnon song but music by the composer Will Van de Crommert.
