DETROIT — Ford Motor is increasing production and cutting prices of its electric Mustang Mach-E crossover, weeks after industry leader Tesla announced similar plans for its EVs. The reductions range from $600 to $5,900, compared with Tesla’s price cuts of up to $13,000 on its Model Y earlier in January. Analysts expected Tesla’s cuts to put pressure on other automakers to cut their own prices. “We are responding to changes in the marketplace,” Gjaja said during a media briefing, referencing new federal EV incentives and Tesla’s price cuts. Ford said existing Mustang Mach-E customers awaiting delivery of their vehicle will automatically receive the adjusted price.

Ford Motor (F) confirmed Monday what Jim Cramer has been speculating for weeks: Price cuts on its electric vehicles following similar moves by Tesla (TSLA). Depending on the models, Ford's price reduction "hurts our decision to own Ford," Jim said Monday after the automaker said the move will make some Mach-E trims unprofitable. Last year, Ford announced a split of its EV and internal combustion engine units into separate businesses — called Ford Model e and Ford Blue, respectively — aiming to increase efficiencies unique to each and maximize profits. [1/4] Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is seen during the Munich Auto Show, IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Germany, September 8, 2021. The move comes as electric vehicle manufacturers are feeling pressure from Tesla's price cut to respond. "Ford just cut Mustang EV prices in response to Tesla’s price cut. "Tesla’s price cut was a major blow to the prospects of competing EV models and the Mustang Mach-E directly competes with Tesla’s Model Y," said Garrett Nelson, an analyst at CFRA Research. Ford said existing Mustang Mach-E customers awaiting delivery of vehicles will automatically receive the price cut.

In protests that followed the killing and the police sweeps, six people were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism. In December, the same charges were filed against five people after law enforcement moved in to clear barricades and confront protesters. But in a number of states, including Georgia, domestic terrorism laws include a wide range of offenses outside those motivated by hate. The Atlanta Solidarity Fund said that the state of Georgia was trying to “set an alarming precedent” with the charges. “If they are successful, protesters across the country could be facing similar speech-chilling ‘domestic terrorism’ charges,'” it said in a statement this week.

"I think we're all building this airplane as we fly," Michael Alford, president of the National Auto Dealers Association, a trade association that represents more than 16,000 U.S. new franchised dealers, told CNBC. Automakers and franchised dealers have a complex relationship that is backed, in many states, by laws that make it difficult, if not illegal, to bypass franchised dealers and sell new vehicles directly to consumers. Both automakers and franchised dealers want to maximize profits, but they're separate businesses that heavily rely on one another to succeed. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesHonda Motor has said it plans to move more sales online, including 100% online sales for its luxury Acura brand for EVs. GM, Ford must convince investors they can profit as prices fall

Already there are signs the Detroit automakers are scaling back spending to offset competitive and economic pressure. GM and Ford both rely on sales of pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States for the bulk of their global profits. The risk to the Detroit automakers' profitability would be a challenge in the best of times. But now, GM and Ford must factor in forecasts for a slowdown, or even a recession, in the U.S. economy. The Model Y SUV competes with Ford's Mustang Mach-E, GM's Cadillac Lyriq EV, and with combustion SUVs the Detroit automakers sell.

‘Shrinking’ Review: When a Therapist Needs Therapy

The delicate polarities that exist within the world of “Shrinking” would certainly include the close-to-antic performance of Jason Segel vs. that of a dryly hilarious Harrison Ford. And the comic dynamic between the glorious Jessica Williams and the askew characters played by Messrs. Ford and Segel. But more essential to the 10-episode series is the seesawing sensation it maintains between profoundly dysfunctional people and feel-good comedy. But the overall sense is a little like laughing at a funeral; the human impulses are familiar, a little perverse and somehow comforting. Ms. Miller is wonderfully droll; Liz’s good deeds do not go unpunished.
Consumer Reports ranked the best advanced driver-assistance systems on the market. Mercedes-Benz's tech took third. Ford BlueCruise took the top spot, ahead of General Motors Super Cruise and Mercedes-Benz's system. That's because Elon Musk's automaker hasn't made significant changes to Autopilot's core functionality in years, Consumer Reports said. While other automakers have evolved their ACC and LCA systems, Tesla has simply fallen behind," Jake Fisher, the organization's senior director of auto testing, said in the report.

Now, Chief Executive Elon Musk is using that superior profitability as a weapon in the EV price war he started. That emboldened automakers to push EV prices higher. Vietnamese EV startup Vinfast said Thursday it will use price promotions to fight back against Tesla. Chinese EV market leader BYD Co Ltd(002594.SZ) announced price increases effective Jan. 1 after Beijing phased out EV subsidies. However, BYD's gross margins of $5,456 per vehicle give it more headroom in a price war than VW, Toyota or GM.
Yet Tesla has the upper hand when it comes to being able to afford those price cuts, suggested Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois. Both Murphy and Wells Fargo's Langan see a more challenging time ahead for Ford and General Motors as a result of Tesla's price cuts. However, Societe Generale believes Tesla price cuts remove some of the mystery that has surrounded it, and could refocus attention on positive moves by legacy automakers. One clear winner from stronger EV demand is auto suppliers, Bank of America's Murphy wrote. 'Torn' on TSLA Analysts were also quick to point out that Tesla's price cuts will no doubt affect its own bottom line.
Tesla has discounted its Model 3 and Model Y cars by up to 20% in a bid to goose sales. The starting price of a Model S also dropped nearly 10%, while the Model X is down 9%. Once a luxury item, Tesla's vehicles will now compete with EVs marketed to more average car buyers. Ford recently hiked the starting price on its F-150 Lightning electric truck to $56,000, up from the original starting price of $40,000. The electric car company has long resisted traditional auto industry discounts, and Musk has even criticized the practice in the past.
DETROIT — Automakers are hopeful last year's new vehicle sales — the worst in more than a decade — will mark a bottom for the market, at least in the near term. Toyota Motor was down 9.6%, while Stellantis , Nissan and Honda Motor posted double-digit falls of 13%, 25% and 29.4%, respectively. But auto industry executives remain cautiously optimistic that sales will rebound in 2023, regardless of recessionary fears, rising interest rates and other economic concerns. Toyota and GM said they expect U.S. auto sales to increase to about 15 million vehicles this year. S&P Global Mobility and Edmunds expect 2023 new U.S. vehicle sales to be 14.8 million, while Cox Automotive's preliminary forecast is 14.1 million.
We're focusing on forward price-to-earnings ratios, calculated by dividing share price by estimated earnings-per-share over the next 12 months. In this high-level hypothetical, start with the multiple you want to pay and multiply that by forward earnings estimates. But now growth is less certain and interest rates are going up, so you think paying 10x forward earnings is too risky. Instead, you think paying 8x forward earnings is more appropriate, meaning you're only willing to pay $40 per share. Oilfield services provider Halliburton (HAL) trades at roughly 13x forward earnings, a valuation that we find very reasonable.
