Asking prices of UK homes show smallest October rise since 2008
  + stars: | 2023-10-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Asking prices for homes in Britain have risen at their slowest pace for the time of year since 2008, property website Rightmove said on Monday in a latest sign of how the climb in borrowing costs has slowed the housing market. Average asking prices for homes increased by 0.5% between Sept. 10 and Oct. 7 from the previous four weeks, well below the average increase for the period of 1.4%, Rightmove said. Prices were down 0.8% compared with a year earlier and the number of agreed sales was down 17% in annual terms. Other measures of Britain's housing market - which boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic - have also cooled with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' measure of house prices showing the most widespread falls since 2009 in September. The U.S. Capitol is seen at sunrise as Republican House members will today continue their search to find a House speaker following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, in Washington, U.S., October 13, 2023. The House of Representatives has drifted leaderless for 12 days since eight of its 221 Republicans ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Some House Republicans voiced frustration and anger that they have gone so long without being able to choose a leader. Our adversaries are watching what we do and ... quite frankly, they like it," said Republican House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul. Former President Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination, has at times been a cheerleader for the chaos.

  + stars: | 2023-10-15 | by ( Aly J. Yale | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +11 min
That’s thanks to the Home Mortgage Interest Deduction, which lets you write off the interest you pay on your mortgage loan throughout the year. What is the mortgage interest deduction? The mortgage interest deduction is a type of itemized tax deduction that has been around in some form since a federal income tax was introduced in 1913. Mortgage pointsMortgage points—an upfront fee you can pay at closing to lower your interest rate—are another form of mortgage interest, just prepaid. Whether you should take the mortgage interest deduction comes down to the age-old question of itemizing vs. using the standard deduction.

Bloggers Marques and Shyra paid off their Sacramento home 21 years early. They paid an extra 1/12 of their payment twice per month, totaling two extra payments every year. You take your monthly mortgage payment amount and divide it by 12," Marques told Insider by email. With just 1/12 of their payment, they didn't notice the extra money they were putting towards their mortgage payment each month. They automated this extra payment to their mortgage lender so they didn't have to think about it.

In turn, higher rates will dampen interest-sensitive expenditure and likely lead to slower growth in oil consumption in 2024. Services are less energy-intensive but more labour-intensive than manufacturing, so the sector’s inflation rate tends to be more persistent and a better indicator of the overall amount of inflationary pressure within the economy. Most rate traders anticipate the central bank will be forced to keep overnight rates higher for longer to squeeze persistent inflation out of the economy. In the short term, the renewed expansion of the U.S. manufacturing and service sectors is supporting oil consumption and prices. In the medium term, however, the higher-for-longer rates needed to bring inflation back to target will likely depress business activity and slow oil consumption growth in 2024.

They are also among the handful of banks which can buy Treasury debt straight from the central bank. That puts leaders like JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon at the center of the global financial spiderweb. To be sure, the financial statements that the banks will start to release on Friday will be backward-looking. Interest income will reflect the sharp and continued rise of central bank rates, which drag up the price banks must pay for customer deposits and what they charge for loans. It’s a big economic question, since plastic-related debt in the United States hit a record $1 trillion in August.

UK housing market challenging but rate pause offers hope -RICS

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) house price balance, which measures the difference between the percentage of surveyors seeing rises and falls in house prices, edged down to -69 after August's sharp drop to -68. Echoing other gauges of British house prices, RICS' latest figure was the weakest since February 2009 and was below the median forecast of -63 in a Reuters poll of economists. Britain's housing market boomed during the coronavirus pandemic as demand for homes with more space surged, but it has been a victim of the BoE's run of 14 interest rate hikes, which began in December 2021. "Although the decision to pause monetary policy tightening a few weeks ago provided a glimmer of relief for the market, interest rates are likely now set to remain on hold for a prolonged period," Parsons said. The weak state of the housing market has hurt companies such as building materials supplier Travis Perkins (TPK.L), which on Wednesday downgraded its annual profit forecast by as much as 27%.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign intelligence chief said on Wednesday that the issue of support for Ukraine was becoming toxic in the United States and that the divisions would deepen ahead of next year's U.S. presidential election. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, the United States and the European Union have made more than $160 billion in commitments to Ukraine, including tens of billions of dollars in weapons. Republican lawmakers' ouster of House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has raised questions about the future of aid to Ukraine. The United States has also repeatedly urged Kyiv to do more to tackle corruption, CNN reported this month. Naryshkin, who has served as Russia's foreign spy chief since October 2016, said the ouster of McCarthy illustrated the "malignancy" of the Ukraine issue in the U.S. body politic.
