Ritzau Scanpix/Ida Marie Odgaard via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsKYIV, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Tuesday vetoed a parliamentary bill that sought to retain closed asset declarations for officials. Lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Telegram the parliament would vote on the bill again around Sept. 20. A public petition asking Zelenskiy to veto the amended measure had rapidly gained tens of thousands of signatures, far above the required 25,000 needed for presidential consideration. Fighting graft is also a requirement for Ukrainian accession to the European Union, and Ukraine's government has declared it a priority alongside repelling Russia's invasion.

TT News Agency/Johan Nilsson via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 11 (Reuters) - Scandinavian airline SAS (SAS.ST), battling to emerge from bankruptcy protection, said on Monday it was extending the deadline for final bids for its equity fundraising by a week to Sept. 25 at the request of bidders. SAS said in May the U.S. court had approved a revised plan to raise equity. Denmark has said it is willing to increase its stake in SAS to around 30% from around 22%, if others investors were to take a majority stake. Reuters reported in May that U.S. asset manager Apollo Global Management Inc (APO.N) planned to apply for approval from Swedish and Danish regulators to take a majority stake in SAS as part its rescue plan. Earlier this month, SAS, which has been under bankruptcy protection since July 2022, posted its first quarterly pretax profit since late 2019.

London CNN —Mounting climate risks, illustrated by the extreme heat, wildfires and floods that ravaged parts of Europe this summer, could hurt the region’s economy as soon as this year, the European Commission warned Monday. In its latest economic forecast, the European Union’s executive arm downgraded its predictions for growth in the region in 2023 and 2024. But it added that there was “formidable uncertainty” over its latest forecast, with extreme weather among the “downside” risks. Construction and manufacturing are among other economic sectors vulnerable to extreme heat, said Owen at Saltmarsh Economics. Similarly to the European Commission, on Sunday the International Monetary Fund pointed to “grave risks to economic well-being” from climate change.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy, allies call for greater focus on war

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during a press conference with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (not pictured) in front of the presidential palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, September 6, 2023. Ritzau Scanpix/Ida Marie Odgaard via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsSept 11 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his allies urged Ukrainians on Monday to keep their focus squarely on the war effort 18 months into Russia's invasion, an indication that authorities in Kyiv were steeling for a long campaign. Zelenskiy has long called for greater focus on the war effort and pledged to intensify a crackdown on corruption as part of Ukraine's bid to join the European Union. The campaign prompted the dismissal of Ukraine's defence minister last week and has also seen the detention of a business magnate who was once Zelenskiy's mentor on fraud charges. But appeals by Zelenskiy and his lieutenants are now more strident as Ukraine's military presses its steady, but relatively slow, counteroffensive in Russian-occupied areas.

Among respondents who do consider the U.S. a global threat, the highest share of agreement came from China at about 75%, while agreement eclipsed 60% among those from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and New Zealand.
