My sister and I inherited his house and sold it to put deposits down on our own apartments. We knew we'd inherit the house and his possessions; he'd told us we were the only people in his will. We had two weeks to put our dad's house on the market, clear out 40 years of memories, and decide what to do with all his possessions. The World Is Becoming More African

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

Sen. Roger Marshall argues that separating Israel aid would prevent it from being bogged down in the House. Photo: Michael Brochstein/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—A group of Republican senators introduced a stand-alone bill that would send billions of dollars in aid to Israel but not Ukraine, underscoring the challenges facing a much larger $106 billion Biden administration proposal that includes more funding for Kyiv. The group of GOP senators argues that separating the Israel aid would prevent the assistance from being bogged down in the House, where the number of Republicans opposed to funding Ukraine aid is growing, and now makes up more than half the GOP conference.

House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as speaker of the House on Wednesday, more than three weeks after Kevin McCarthy was ousted. Photo: Reuters/Elizabeth FrantzWASHINGTON—The House is back open for business. But getting legislation through it—much less agreeing with the Democratic Senate and President Biden—won’t be easy for brand-new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson , with major deadlines less than a month away. After 22 days of GOP infighting, the Louisiana Republican secured his post Wednesday without any opposition from his fellow House Republicans. That unity will be tested soon, with lawmakers facing a slew of policy and political challenges, including a government funding deadline in three weeks, aid requests for Israel and Ukraine and a farm bill that has already expired.

Mike Johnson of Louisiana as speaker, elevating a staunch conservative to the top post after three weeks of Republican infighting doomed other candidates aiming to succeed ousted leader Kevin McCarthy. The choice of Johnson, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, came after the party cycled through a series of hopefuls, prompting some members to wonder whether any colleague could thread the needle in the deeply divided conference. With a speaker now in place, lawmakers can finally get back to work, with many eager to pass aid for Israel and address a looming government-funding deadline next month.

EMPEROR OF ROME: Ruling the Ancient Roman World, by Mary BeardIf social media is to be believed, men can’t stop thinking about the Roman Empire, particularly its “alpha male” elements. Anyone similarly obsessed would do well to pick up a copy of “Emperor of Rome,” an erudite and entertaining new book by the redoubtable classics scholar and feminist Mary Beard. The “good” emperors are invariably wise, kind, prudent and generous, while the “bad” ones are dim, disgusting, decadent and miserly. Did Elagabalus really arrange to smother his dinner guests to death by dropping rose petals from the ceiling? Beard encourages us to be skeptical of all the “preposterous anecdotes,” even as she maintains that such demonizing can tell us something about how power works.

The administration’s proposal includes about $61 billion for Ukraine, another $14 billion for Israel for security needs, and about $9 billion for humanitarian assistance to both conflict theaters, among other requests. It also includes about $2 billion for security assistance in the Indo-Pacific and $14 billion for the border, which would pay for more efficient processing of migrants seeking asylum, more border patrol agents and asylum officers, and reimbursements to cities and private organizations that have set up shelters.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday told investors they may be wise to hold out on buying until interest rates rise and resulting sell-offs make stocks cheaper. "For now, your best bet is to wait for the next move up in interest rates, which will trigger the next sell-off in stocks — that's when you buy," Cramer said. Cramer suggested there is a "schism" between what certain companies are truly worth versus where their stocks are currently trading. With the exception of GE, Cramer said these companies seemed to be performing poorly but saw rallies after their reports. Cramer said it's not worth the risk of "betting on a beat and raise quarter" that may rely on the performance of S&P 500 futures.

Despite high prices and mortgage rates, they said homeownership will pay off for many people in the long-run. Many Americans have been left wondering when — if ever — the time will be right for them to enter the housing market. "Many homeowners first bought their home when interest rates were high — the 50-year average rate on a mortgage is 7.8%," he said. Even if cuts to interest rates cause mortgage rates to fall, they're unlikely to return to the near-zero levels they were in 2022. If and when mortgage rates fall, Yun said that some homeowners who have been eager to move — but have been reluctant to give up their low interest rates — will likely decide to sell.

For almost twenty years, researchers and nonprofits have warned about the negative consequences of starving nonprofits of general operating expenses, also known as overhead.
