CNN —More and more people are using marijuana before or during pregnancy to ease nausea, pain, stress and help with sleep. What about the potential danger to the mother if she uses cannabis before or during early pregnancy? People who used marijuana in early pregnancy also had a “19% greater risk of placental abruption,” Young-Wolff said. Using at least once a month or more was linked to a greater risk of placental abruption, the study found. “More studies are needed to understand whether and how cannabis use in pregnancy may impact risk for gestational diabetes,” Moore said.

Pope said Boeing is on the right path to improving its manufacturing quality, safety and predictability of deliveries, a "transformational change" that she said will take years. "It still doesn't take away the reality that we've disappointed" our customers, she said at a press conference before the Farnborough Airshow, outside of London. "This plan is not a three month plan," said Pope. As part of the leadership shakeup that promoted Pope to head the commercial unit, Boeing's CEO Dave Calhoun said he would step down by year's end. Boeing reports quarterly results on July 31 and is set to report charges from that unit, Colbert said at the same press conference.

Students have been demonstrating against a quota system for government jobs, which they consider unfair. On Thursday, protesters set fire to at least two government buildings in Dhaka, the capital, including Bangladesh’s national television station. Ms. Hasina’s government has deployed the police and paramilitary forces, including an antiterrorism unit, against the demonstrators. Students, armed mainly with sticks and bats, have fought the police and members of the student wing of the Awami League, Ms. Hasina’s party.

As the 2024 market rally broadens out, some small-cap stocks are poised to do better than others. But with interest rate cuts on the horizon, the prospects for small-cap stocks have improved in recent weeks. The Russell 2000 small-cap index has already risen more than 6% in July alone. Against that backdrop, CNBC Pro screened for the small-cap stocks that could be poised for a boost. "We believe near-term expectations are reasonable, and given the stock's negative sentiment and recent market volatility, we decided to move to the sidelines," wrote analyst Chris O'Cull.

CNN —Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday claimed responsibility for a deadly drone blast in Tel Aviv, the Iranian proxy group’s latest attack in what it says is a response to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The drone that caused the explosion was detected by an Israeli aerial defense system, but not intercepted due to “human error,” an Israeli military official said. The Israeli military is investigating the attack and does not believe further threats are imminent, the official said. An investigator inspects a damaged window of a building at the site of an explosion in Tel Aviv on July 19, 2024. The drone attack in Tel Aviv Friday comes after the Houthis claimed earlier this month that they had targeted ships in the Israeli port of Haifa with a number of drones in joint military operations with Iran-backed militias based in Iraq.

China must "adapt to the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation," an official English-language communique said. It also said China would "improve the new system for mobilizing resources nationwide to make key technological breakthroughs." The readout affirmed Beijing's commitment to balancing development with ensuring national security, and did not otherwise reveal policy changes. "I would highlight 'innovation and managed markets' as the top two keywords in the Third Plenum," Xu said. Regarding the latest plenary meeting, "we think any market-oriented reform will be measured and carried out insofar as it doesn't compromise national security," Xu said.

For decades, the National Guard has had some level of presence on the southwest border. The border mission is mostly static security and surveillance, but troops typically are not allowed to interact directly with migrants or suspected smugglers. It also has been contributing to retention issues that have plagued the Army National Guard. The move sparked numerous questions on the ethics and legality of privately funding National Guard operations — and came as Noem was boosting her national profile. The National Guard has frequently been caught in the middle between state politicians and federal officials.

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.
