While this risks escalation, it might be necessary — and a lack of resolve is also a risk in the face of ongoing attacks. The international oil benchmark Brent crude held around $88 Wednesday after trading closer to $94 late last week. Bank of America sees any escalation involving Iran triggering a jump to $120 to $130 per barrel. If a physical supply disruption occurs because of attacks on energy infrastructure, oil could surge above $130 a barrel, Bank of America said. If the strait is closed, oil prices can spike above $250 per barrel, the bank said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Netanyahu said the Israeli military was still preparing for a ground operation in the Gaza Strip. American officials say it will take them a few more days to get many of those new antimissile batteries in place. The Financial Times reported earlier on the request to delay the ground invasion to give time to get the air defense assets in place. The American officials have urged Mr. Netanyahu’s war cabinet to give Washington more time to place antimissile batteries to protect both Israel and American troops in the region, according to several American officials. CNN —A teenage Iranian girl who fell into a coma after she was allegedly assaulted by the country’s morality police for not wearing a headscarf is “brain dead,” state-aligned media said. Earlier in October, the Norway-based Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, which focuses on Kurdish rights, said Geravand was “assaulted” by morality police and fell into a coma. “This request resulted in an altercation with the morality police officers physically assaulting Geravand. Iranian authorities have denied the allegations, saying Geravand was hospitalized due to an injury caused by low blood pressure. Armita Geravand was hospitalized in October following an incident at a Tehran metro station.

CNN —The US has intelligence that Iranian-backed militia groups are planning to ramp up attacks against US forces in the Middle East, as Iran seeks to capitalize on the backlash in the region to US support for Israel, according to multiple US officials. The militia groups have already launched multiple drone attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria. But the US now has specific intelligence that those same groups could escalate even further as the war between Israel and Hamas continues. Officials said that at this point, Iran appears to be encouraging the groups rather than explicitly directing them. In the case of the recent drone attacks on bases housing US forces, “Iran is certainly more culpable than in the case of the Hamas attack in Israel,” said another person familiar with the intelligence.
