There was more action in bitcoin , which gained 1.2% to $68,341 after surging more than 7% on Monday. The Japanese yen held steady after data showed Tokyo core inflation sped up to 2.5% in February, from 1.8% the previous month. "Accordingly, we're sticking to our forecast that the Bank of Japan will hike interest rates into positive territory next month." The dollar was a fraction lower at 150.44 yen , having again shied away from resistance around 150.85, which has capped the currency for more than three months now. The European Central Bank, or ECB, holds a meeting on Thursday and markets are convinced it will keep rates at 4.0%.

Opinion | The New Rape Denialism
  + stars: | 2024-03-05 | by ( Bret Stephens | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On Oct. 7, Hamas invaded Israel and filmed itself committing scores of human-rights atrocities. Some of the footage was later captured by the Israeli military and screened to hundreds of journalists, including me. The “pure, predatory sadism,” as Atlantic writer Graeme Wood described it, is bottomless. I’ll get to that in a moment, but first it’s worth looking at the forms this denialism takes. A third is to treat anything an Israeli says as inherently suspect.

Microsoft is accusing The New York Times of "unsubstantiated" claims in the publisher's lawsuit filed in December against OpenAI, a case that could have major implications for the future of generative artificial intelligence. In a motion to dismiss part of the suit on Monday, Microsoft said the Times presented a false narrative of "doomsday futurology" in which OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot will decimate the news business. "In this case, The New York Times uses its might and its megaphone to challenge the latest profound technological advance: the Large Language Model," attorneys for Microsoft wrote. In its lawsuit, the Times accused OpenAI and Microsoft of copyright infringement and abusing the newspaper's intellectual property in training LLMs. A New York Times spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

United Nations CNN —A United Nations team has found “clear and convincing” information that hostages in Gaza were sexually abused, Pramila Patten, the UN special envoy on sexual violence in conflict told reporters on Monday. There are “reasonable grounds” to believe the sexual violence is ongoing, she added. The UN team, which was led by Patten, visited Israel between January 29 to February 14 for a mission “aimed at gathering, analyzing, and verifying information on conflict-related sexual violence” during October 7 and its aftermath, according to a 24-page report. The mission was not able to meet with any victims of sexual violence on October 7 “despite our efforts,” Patten said. But we received information that a handful of them were receiving very specialized trauma treatment and were not prepared to come forward,” she said.

With bitcoin on a hot streak this past week, investors should brace themselves for a cooling in March. "But cash inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs are accelerating, and that seems to have been overpowering those technical signals." Although Bitcoin traded above $62,000 to end the week, it's realized price was down at the $42,000 level, according to CryptoQuant. CryptoQuant also showed the cost of opening new long positions in the futures market spiked in the recent rally, which historically signals a coming correction in the bitcoin price. Ether, however, has ended the month higher in six of the last eight March's since its inception, with an average gain on the month of 25%.

Despite these obstacles, I chose to keep my kids screen-free: they don't have iPads, smartphones, or computers and don't watch TV. Raising your kids screen-free is not as radical as you would think. I can't even remember why I started doing itPeople in our lives have been surprised about keeping our kids screen-free — possibly because they have to confront their own kids' use of screens.

CNN —The dominant perception of early photography from West Africa is that it was taken through a colonizing lens. These are questions asked by a new book that seeks to re-examine the history of photography in the region. Her book demonstrates that gap was short, and history has been obscured in a way that has disenfranchised many Africans. Unlike some other West African nations, Senegal has no recorded history of portraiture before photography, Paoletti said. Biotechnology stocks have recently shown renewed strength, and improving momentum may just push these names toward the top of the leaderboard. Second, this level also represented a 38.2% retracement level based on the 2021 high and 2022 low, which is a widely followed support level based on the Fibonacci methodology. This week, IBB has bounced off that support level, making a new 52-week high as it briefly pushed above the 50% retracement level around $140. The Cooking app, along with Games, The Athletic, and Wirecutter, have bolstered the company's subscription business by providing different entry points. The "All Access" bundle strategy also lets the Times leverage upticks in demand for different types of content depending on the time of year (such as the winter holidays, which are peak cooking times) or news cycles. Senator Mitch McConnell, the longtime top Senate Republican, said on Wednesday that he would give up his spot as the party’s leader at the end of this year, acknowledging that his Reaganite national security views had put him out of step with a party now headed by former President Donald J. Trump. “Believe me, I know the politics within my party at this particular time,” Mr. McConnell, who turned 82 last week, said in a speech on the Senate floor announcing his intentions. Misunderstanding politics is not one of them.”His decision, reported earlier by The Associated Press, was not a surprise. Mr. McConnell suffered a serious fall last year and experienced some episodes where he momentarily froze in front of the media. Mr. McConnell had said that he would serve out his full Senate term ending in 2027, but had been more opaque about whether he would try to remain leader after the November elections.

President Biden and his allies had reasons for both hope and concern after a Michigan primary election that revealed the party’s painful divisions over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and confronted him with his largest measure of Democratic opposition to date. He avoided his anxious supporters’ darkest predictions by winning the Tuesday primary, 81 percent to 13 percent, over an “uncommitted” movement that sprang up to protest his backing of Israel. Yet more than 100,000 voters registered their disapproval of him, signaling serious discontent among Arab Americans, young voters and progressives as he tries to stitch back together his winning 2020 coalition. Democratic unease with Mr. Biden’s handling of the Mideast war will not go away as the presidential primary calendar moves on to more than a dozen Super Tuesday states next week, but his allies are optimistic that Michigan will serve as the high-water mark for resistance to the president within his party. Though many states have the option for Democrats to cast protest votes against Mr. Biden, they are not nearly as likely as Michigan was to become a national litmus test for his popularity or his handling of the war in Gaza.
