For context, Nvidia makes powerful computer chips that power popular AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot. As of market close on Feb. 21, the tech company's market cap sat at $1.667 trillion, putting it behind Alphabet's $1.779 trillion market cap. Nvidia's stock price has been on an upward trajectory so far this year. Although the company's stock price declined by nearly 3% during Wednesday's trading session, shares have surged by nearly 40% since the beginning of the year. Although short-term demand for Nvidia's AI chips has been strong, major companies such as Microsoft and Meta have indicated interest in buying them from other companies.

NVDA 5Y mountain Nvidia 5 years The Nvidia phenomenon is something for all investors to take note of and study. The first question we got on the call was in relation to the sustainability of the Data Center sales momentum. Generative AI isn't possible in a data center built for traditional general-purpose computing. In fact, Nvidia believes AI inferencing was responsible for about 40% of Data Center sales over the past year. This is why Nvidia was designated by Jim Cramer and the Club as an "own it, don't trade it" stock.

Nvidia's Data Center business just logged $18.4 billion in fourth-quarter sales, underscoring how the computer chip giant continues to benefit from the current boom in artificial intelligence. Analysts were expecting Nvidia's data center unit to record $17.06 billion in sales for its fiscal fourth quarter. Investors are closely watching Nvidia's Data Center business, which includes the company's H100 graphics cards that are widely used to power generative AI apps such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Nvidia's data center unit has blossomed, particularly over the past three quarters. Fiscal Q3 2023 – data center revenue was $3.83 billion, up 31% from the year prior.

Data center capacity constraints could one day eat into Nvidia's revenue potential, according to UBS analysts. "A major factor that we believe will probably start coming into play is data center capacity — which we do think starts to hurt revenue, albeit maybe more in 2026 than in 2025," Arcuri said, in a separate report. For the fourth quarter, UBS expects Nvidia to report data center revenue of $19.45 billion, which would entail sequential growth of 34%. It also expects revenue and earnings per share, as well as data center revenue, to increase in 2025 and 2026. According to FactSet, average estimates for data center revenue are around $17.06 billion and $20.4 billion in total revenue for the fourth quarter.

Mariam Pettit, partner at Global Founders Capital, said the rush toward AI was in part driven by investor FOMO. While investors and industry insiders don't anticipate the same fate for generative AI startups, many see the parallels between the two industries. Indeed, VCs are paying premiums and pre-empting rounds into hot AI startups in a bid to get a place on the cap table. AI founders are aware that they need to differentiate themselves in order to survive, at the very least. "And with vertical AI startups, it's much clearer that all the data we have is approved by the creator of that data."

NEW YORK (AP) — The maker of ChatGPT is now diving into AI-generated video. The model can also generate video from an existing still image. Getting an AI system to generate videos is newer and more challenging but relies on some of the same technology. Still, industry analysts stress the apparent quality and and impressive length of Sora videos shared so far. Although Sora's abilities have astounded observers since Thursday's launch, anxiety over ethical and societal implications of AI-generated video uses also remains.

OpenAI, which burst into the mainstream last year thanks to the popularity of ChatGPT, is bringing its artificial intelligence technology to video. Sora can also generate video clips inspired by still images, and extend existing videos or fill in missing frames. With Sora, OpenAI is looking to compete with video-generation AI tools from companies like Meta and Google , which announced Lumiere last month. Sora is a diffusion AI model that, like ChatGPT, uses the Transformer architecture, introduced by Google researchers in a 2017 paper. "Sora serves as a foundation for models that can understand and simulate the real world," OpenAI wrote in its announcement.

OpenAI is reportedly developing a web search product to compete with Google Search. The ChatGPT maker is developing its own web search product, The Information reported, citing unnamed sources. The new product may be partly powered by Microsoft's search engine Bing, per the report. The Information report said it's unclear if OpenAI's search product would be separate from ChatGPT, its AI chatbot. The development puts OpenAI into more direct competition with Google Search and follows Microsoft's attempt to boost its Bing search engine with the AI company's tech.

But the blog does offer insight into how U.S. geopolitical rivals have been using large-language models to expand their ability to more effectively breach networks and conduct influence operations. But criminals and offensive hackers use it as well, and the introduction of large-language models led by OpenAI's ChatGPT upped that game of cat-and-mouse. — Iran's Revolutionary Guard has used large-language models to assist in social engineering, in troubleshooting software errors, and even in studying how intruders might evade detection in a compromised network. “Of course bad actors are using large-language models — that decision was made when Pandora’s Box was opened," said Amit Yoran, CEO of the cybersecurity firm Tenable. Some cybersecurity professionals complain about Microsoft's creation and hawking of tools to address vulnerabilities in large-language models when it might more responsibly focus on making them more secure.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The CEO of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI said Tuesday that the dangers that keep him awake at night regarding artificial intelligence are the “very subtle societal misalignments” that could make the systems wreak havoc. “There’s some things in there that are easy to imagine where things really go wrong. And I’m not that interested in the killer robots walking on the street direction of things going wrong," Altman said. G42 has what experts suggest is the world's leading Arabic-language artificial intelligence model. However, the discussion with Altman, moderated by the UAE's Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence Omar al-Olama, touched on none of the local concerns.
