There are two competing visions for the future of the AI business, according to Marc Andreessen. Instead, it's one of the most fundamental (and arguably surreal) questions facing the AI industry today, according to legendary investor Marc Andreessen. In the first vision, AI startups are in a winner-takes-all race. These AI models, such as Meta's Llama offerings, are freely available for almost anyone to use, while OpenAI sells access to propriety, closed models. But if downloadable, open-source models pull all prices down to the "cost of production," then Andreessen's first vision — of "infinite profits" — starts to appear a little less likely.

"Iran uses ballistic missiles as a replacement for aircraft," a regional expert said. Iran used more ballistic missiles than the 120 it launched during its April barrage, its first direct attack on Israel. Iran has also shown a preference for firing ballistic missiles against less-defended targets closer to home. Since 2017, Iran has also used its ballistic missiles against ISIS in Syria, following terrorist attacks in Iran and, on one occasion, alleged militant targets in Pakistan. In January 2024, Tehran even used ballistic missiles to destroy a businessman's residence in neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan.

A Ukrainian drone commander says his unit can use $100 million to carry out 5,000 lethal strikes, per The Atlantic. The big takeaway was that, on average, for each $20,000 spent on his unit, Ukraine could score one kill on Russian forces. According to The Atlantic's writers, the commander's slides said that a drone unit funded with $100 million could stay on the battlefield for a full year, carrying out 5,000 lethal strikes. AdvertisementThe commander is based out of Kharkiv, according to his Telegram channel, which publishes clips of his drones attacking Russian forces and equipment. In February, Ukraine's then-military chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, called for a mindset shift away from a reliance on Western aid and instead toward cheap drones.

A sign outside of the Starbucks headquarters is seen at Starbucks Center on July 3, 2024 in Seattle, Washington. More than a decade ago, Starbucks bought its first coffee farm, in Costa Rica. For Starbucks, which buys 3% of the world's coffee, the shortages can mean scrambling to find Arabica beans — and higher prices for its customers. Consumer coffee prices have risen 18% over the last five years as of August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. New Tesla Cybertruck vehicles parked at a logistics drop zone in Seattle, Washington, US, on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. Tesla said on Thursday it would recall most Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to delayed rear-view camera images that could impair driver visibility and increase crash risks, adding that a software update would resolve the issue. The recall covers more than 27,000 Cybertrucks, Tesla said in a report filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Cybertruck's system in the affected vehicles may not complete a shutdown process before it is commanded to boot up, resulting in a delay in displaying the rear-view image, Tesla said. Tesla earlier this year recalled most Cybertrucks in the U.S. over issues with their windshield wipers and exterior trim.

Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, gestures as he addresses the media during a press conference at the Bank of England in London on Aug. 1, 2024. The British pound tumbled more than 1% against the U.S. dollar on Thursday after a The Guardian report that Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey suggested more positive inflation data could lead the central bank toward a more aggressive approach to interest rate cuts. He also said he was encouraged that cost of living pressures had not been as persistent as previously thought, according to the Guardian. The central bank held its key rate in September, after cutting it by 25 basis points in August to 5%. During the September meeting, the institution expressed concerns about services inflation and the labor market, despite headline inflation hovering near its 2% target.

The strike led to fears of a potential escalation in Russian attacks on the Black Sea grain corridor. But according to the UK MOD, it was likely an error caused by poor procedures and aging munition. Tonight, Russia launched a strike on an ordinary civilian vessel in the Black Sea right after it left Ukrainian territorial waters. Related storiesSince its exit from the Black Sea grain initiative, Russia's attacks on Ukrainian naval export abilities have been largely limited to striking ports, and — it's widely believed — dropping naval mines. Despite the potential for economic warfare, Russia has good reason to avoid escalating the threat to shipping in the Black Sea, Ambrey wrote.
