London CNN —The International Monetary Fund has warned that stubborn inflation could keep interest rates higher for longer than expected, increasing fiscal and financial risks around the world. Persistently high prices for services — which include haircuts, hotels and restaurants — as well as escalating trade tensions are propping up inflation and raising the prospect that interest rates will stay high for a while yet, the IMF cautioned Tuesday in its latest World Economic Outlook. The warning highlights that the global economy is not yet in the clear when it comes to inflation, which explains the caution on the part of central banks in cutting interest rates. However, services inflation came in higher than expected. The agency blamed sticky services price inflation for “holding up progress” on reducing overall inflation.

Elon Musk is going all-in on Donald Trump

New York CNN —At first glance Elon Musk and Donald Trump wouldn’t seem to be natural allies. Musk has given money to candidates from both parties in the past, including $5,000 to Barack Obama in April of 2011. Musk quit two White House business councils he served on early in 2017 after Trump announced America would withdraw from Paris climate accord. But for the last several years Musk has repeatedly shown support for Trump – or opposition to President Joe Biden. New York CNN —US markets rose Monday as investors processed the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump over the weekend. The Dow rose 169 points, or 0.4%, paring its gains after hitting a fresh all-time high earlier in the session. The Republican Party’s campaign platform promises to “end Democrats’ unlawful and un-American crypto crackdown.”Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group, the former president’s social media company, popped 35.6%. A Trump win in November likely means the preservation or expansion of tax cuts and increased tariffs. While economic growth sounds positive for the US, some investors worry that it could reaccelerate inflation.

Private efforts to nudge Biden to step aside continue

Milwaukee CNN —The public calls from Democrats asking President Joe Biden to bow out of the presidential race have quieted in recent days, but private efforts to nudge the president and his top aides continue, several Democratic sources told CNN. “Lose everything,” is how one Democrat described a polling memo Greenberg sent to Biden’s inner circle in recent days. “Devastating,” was the one word answer of a second Democrat close to the White House who is familiar with the Greenberg memos. Greenberg has been a leading Democratic pollster for decades and his work includes advising Bill Clinton’s two winning presidential campaigns. In his NBC News interview Monday, for example, the president again made clear he has no intention of stepping aside.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Jackson Heights, Queens, has been called “the most culturally diverse neighborhood in New York, if not on the planet.” It is also a neighborhood with the some of the least green space in New York. On Roosevelt Avenue, the elevated subway line rattles above a steady stream of car traffic. Storefronts and pushcarts on the narrow, bustling sidewalks offer all kinds of food — Thai, Chinese, Mexican, Himalayan, Indian, Colombian, Guatemalan, Ecuadorean, Peruvian and more — but it’s tough to find any calm. Yet just three blocks north, running parallel to Roosevelt, is 34th Avenue, where a stretch of 26 blocks, running east to west, has been closed to cars from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day since 2020.

A Fossil Mystery, Solved by a Spin

A Fossil Mystery, Solved by a SpinEssexella fossils date back to the Carboniferous period, when northern parts of Illinois hovered just above the equator. Essexella fossils are composed of two structures — a textured, barrel-shaped region and a smooth bulb. “It looked like the bottom of an anemone,” Dr. Plotnick said. Dr. Plotnick, Dr. Hagadorn and their team redescribed Essexella as an ancient anemone last year in the journal Papers in Palaeontology. Elon Musk Allies Help Start Pro-Trump Super PAC

Some of Elon Musk’s closest friends have helped start a new super PAC meant to help former President Donald J. Trump, creating an avenue for Mr. Musk and his $250 billion fortune to potentially play a significant role in the 2024 presidential race. Mr. Musk had not donated to the super PAC as of June 30, the end of the most recent disclosure period, according to a Monday filing with the Federal Election Commission. On Saturday, soon after Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt, Mr. Musk went on X to issue a full-throated endorsement of the former president. The super PAC, according to three people close to the organization, is led in part by Joe Lonsdale, a co-founder of the software company Palantir and a politically ambitious venture capitalist in Austin who serves as a political confidant to Mr. Musk. Mr. Lonsdale, the people say, has played a key role in fund-raising for the group in its opening weeks, encouraging his network of influential entrepreneurs to support the super PAC.

Ancient relative of the great white sharkMost species of Ptychodus lived between 100 and 80 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Because shark skeletons are made of cartilage, they do not fossilize well, typically leaving archaeologists only teeth and few skeletal remains to find. But the portrayal of trans women as predators was a new innovation that had a huge impact on the horror genre. Andit had a big impact on Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs” in which the terrifying serial killer, Buffalo Bill, is a predatory trans woman (or more precisely, as Jos Truitt has explained, Bill is a transphobic caricature of a trans woman). The danger isn’t from trans women — it’s from heterosexual cis patriarchs — a reality much truer to life than Hitchcock’s fever dream. Perhaps in part for that reason, the director is careful not to make Longlegs trans or gay. It’s not just “Longlegs” which displaces violence onto queer people: Movies like “Psycho” and “Silence of the Lambs” are often acts of aggression aimed by male directors at queer people (and especially at queer women).
