ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — Seven royal artifacts looted 150 years ago by British colonial forces from Ghana’s ancient Asante kingdom and kept by a United States museum have been returned and presented to the kingdom on Thursday, the latest of a series of stolen treasured items being repatriated to several African countries. After decades of resistance from European and Western governments and museums, the efforts of African countries to repatriate stolen artifacts are paying off with the increasing return of treasured pieces. That was when four of the items were looted while the other three were part of an indemnity payment made by the Asante kingdom to the British, the museum said. All seven items are being returned unconditionally and permanently though the kingdom allowed their replicas to be made, the museum added. “And ever since, as a kid, I had the vision that one day we shall have all these artifacts back to our Asante nation.”

We’re growing some teeth as to what can be done with AI, but we also see where there’s progress, there’s attack. One of the things I like to point out with AI systems is that if your AI systems fail on people of color, you don’t have a robust system. If your AI doesn’t work on the global majority, if your AI doesn’t work for women, if your AI doesn’t work for people with disabilities, once you start expanding all of the areas we’re talking about, it comes to your AI doesn’t work for humanity. To me, that’s a proactive approach of saying, how do we build consumer AI technology in a way that’s more ethical? I was talking to Sam Altman about the climate impact of AI, especially these large language models and generative AI systems.

ROME (Reuters) - Italy will help with the rebuilding of a cathedral in the Ukrainian city of Odesa that was badly damaged by a missile strike last year, the Italian foreign ministry said on Thursday. Italy and UNESCO signed an agreement in Kyiv to provide 500 million euros ($539 million) towards the restoration of the roof of Odesa's Spaso-Preobrazhenskyi Cathedral, or Transfiguration Cathedral. "Italy is very committed, through its institutions and its industrial capacity, to the reconstruction of Ukraine," ambassador Pier Francesco Zazo said, noting Italy's expertise in the restoration of places of worship and monuments. Ukraine said the Orthodox cathedral was damaged when it was hit during a Russian missile attack on the southern port of Odesa last July. The Italian involvement follows through on a commitment made in the immediate aftermath of the attack by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to provide help with rebuilding.

Asking someone for help can feel like a burdensome request. Asking for a helper tells the other person that you respect their expertise, flattering them into agreement. That's just one example of turning "options into identities," says Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. "Framing actions as opportunities to claim desired identities will make people more likely to do them," Berger tells CNBC Make It. "If voting becomes an opportunity to show myself and others that I am voter, I'm more likely to do it."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s cybersecurity agency has launched a program aimed at boosting election security in the states, shoring up support for local offices and hoping to provide reassurance to voters that this year's presidential elections will be safe and accurate. Officials with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency planned to introduce its new election security adviser program Thursday to the National Association of State Election Directors and on Friday to the National Association of Secretaries of State. For state and local election officials, the list of security challenges keeps growing. The CISA program includes 10 new hires, all of whom join the federal agency with extensive election experience. CISA Director Jen Easterly announced plans for the program at a July meeting of the state election directors in South Carolina.

I follow a lot of cooking accounts on TikTok and Instagram, which means that I get served ever more cooking content, and over the past few years, I’ve noticed a stylistic change. But lately, more and more of the cooking video creators appear as their full selves, and most of them are blandly attractive. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need a chef to tell me that a ham and cheese sandwich tastes good. It’s reached the point where I can’t tell: Are these recipes good, or are the people leading me through them just good-looking in a way that’s rewarded by social media algorithms? But it made me wonder whether the “beauty premium” — something that economists have observed over many years — is greater now that individuals with all different levels of expertise can get a career boost from having a robust social media presence.

CNN —More than 800 officials from the United States and Europe have signed a scathing criticism of Western policy towards Israel and Gaza, accusing their governments of possible complicity in war crimes. Among them are around 80 United States officials and diplomats, a source told CNN. The official added that the ICJ’s decision to hear a genocide case lodged against Israel was validation for the authors’ concerns. Despite the letter not listing its authors, the US official told CNN many colleagues feared losing their jobs, and that the lower number of US signatories reflected stronger protections for official dissents in Europe. Going forward, getting a job at Meta and keeping it will remain tough. Mark Zuckerberg , cofounder and CEO of Meta, formerly Facebook, said Thursday during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call that 2023's " Year of Efficiency " was so successful for the company that a "leaner" operating structure will be "a permanent part of how we operate going forward." While Meta said it has "completed" layoffs from 2023, Zuckerberg is still applying his new efficiency mentality. Meta will also continue to squeeze head count and hiring, Zuckerberg said. Despite Meta's success in growing revenue, profitability, and cutting costs over the last year, hiring plans going forward are "relatively minimal, compared to what we would have done historically," Zuckerberg said.
