I'm a high school teacher, and I see parents spend way too much on school supplies all the time. Many states have tax-free weekends, and many stores schedule school supply sales for those weekends. As a high school teacher, I often see families overspending and wasting money. Have your school supply list handy as soon as it's released, and pick up the items on sale when you find them. Check with your school for support programsIf money is tight (and even if it's not), check with your school and community to see if there are support programs for school supplies.

Activist Commentary: Oasis Management is a global hedge fund management firm headquartered in Hong Kong with additional offices in Tokyo and Austin, Texas, as well as the Cayman Islands. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical is a Japan-based pharmaceuticals and consumer products company. It would imbue the company with a sense of urgency to improve operational performance, corporate governance and shareholder value maximization. But that is also a long shot, even at a company with corporate governance issues as we have here. The firm is a top-tier Japan shareholder activist and if anyone can get board seats in Japan, it is Oasis.

Wealthy investors and family offices shied away from stocks leading up to market swings this week, but many saw the drop in prices as an opportunity for tax savings and estate planning, according to wealth advisors. When stocks tumbled Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq down 3%, wealthy investors neither panicked nor jumped in to buy, according to several advisors. The drop in prices last Friday and Monday also offered a chance for wealthy investors to take advantage of tax benefits and gift strategies. With the gift and estate exemption amount scheduled to expire at the end of next year, many wealthy investors are working to give away the maximum before the expiration. “Most family offices are so invested in alternatives, hedge funds, PE and real estate, that they aren’t moving their investments around anyway,” said Geoffrey von Kuhn, an advisor to several of the nation’s largest family offices.

Aiming to unseat three-term Democratic incumbent Jon Tester, Sheehy is founder of Montana-based Bridger Aerospace, an aerial firefighting company. On July 1, Sheehy resigned as chief executive of Bridger to focus on his Senate campaign; the company is seeking a replacement. In mid-June, an editorial in The Wall Street Journal echoed Griffin’s view, branding Sheehy’s company Bridger a success. The PAC spent $5.3 million for Sheehy and $5.7 million against his opponent, Tester, records show. In 2022, Sheehy’s cash and stock compensation neared $5 million, and last year, he received $2.5 million, Bridger’s proxy says.

Missouri voters have once again passed a constitutional amendment requiring Kansas City to spend at least a quarter of its budget on police, up from 20% previously. “We don’t defund them.”Kansas City leaders have vehemently denied any intention of ending the police department. Kansas City is the only city in Missouri — and one of the largest in the U.S. — that does not have local control of its police department. “We consider this to be a major local control issue,” said Gwen Grant, president of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City. That statute remained in place until 2013, when voters approved a constitutional amendment returning police to local control.

The U.S. is in what may end up being its biggest summer wave of Covid, with no end yet in sight. This year’s summer wave also began earlier than last year’s, Jha said. “Besides that, there’s not much that we can sort of put our finger on to say this is what’s driving this summer surge," Pekosz said. Jha said that what happens this winter is impossible to predict but that there could be a silver lining to a large summer wave. “A big summer wave tends to lead to a little bit of a smaller winter wave and vice versa, just because there’s a little bit more immunity in the population,” he said.

The report, released Thursday by NASA’s Office of Inspector General, calls into question Boeing’s standards and quality control for its part in NASA’s efforts to return astronauts to the moon. But according to the report, Boeing’s quality control systems fall short of NASA’s requirements, and some known deficiencies have gone unaddressed. Now, the report from NASA's inspector general has found that the second stage of the Space Launch System — the part Boeing is responsible for — is significantly over budget. As for Boeing's quality control practices, the NASA inspector general said that from 2021 to 2023, federal oversight officers issued 71 “Corrective Action Requests” to address “deficiencies in quality.”Many of the requests took aim at Boeing’s work at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana. “Quality control issues at Michoud are largely due to the lack of a sufficient number of trained and experienced aerospace workers at Boeing,” the report said.

Underneath the blast door stands one of the most powerful weapons in the US inventory, a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. But unlike the other two parts of the triad – strategic bombers and ballistic missile submarines – the ICBM launch facilities are fixed positions. Last year, the commander of US Strategic Command told Congress that China has more land-based ballistic missile launchers than the US. Russia has been carrying out military exercises involving its tactical nuclear weapons, as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons since invading Ukraine. That complexity, Schlabach argued, drives the need for modernizing the ballistic missile fleet.

If reelected, Trump said Thursday he’d go further: He’d try to exert direct power over monetary policy. He gets a little bit too early and a little bit too late,” Trump said. Still, Trump has recently advocated against a rate cut before the election, saying such a decision from the Fed would be a gift to the Democratic party. Rate cuts tend to reduce borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, freeing up cash to to spend and boosting the economy. Presidents frequently gripe about Fed policy, but Trump’s public pressure campaign is in a league of its own.

But as the scale of the attack became clearer, with thousands of Ukrainian troops advancing up to 6 miles into Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin hurried to contain the fallout. Ukraine's attack catches Russia off guardA Russian military video showing a Ukrainian tank during an attack on the Kursk region in Russia in August. It's led to fierce criticism of the Kremlin from ultranationalist bloggers, who've questioned why the Russian military was so unprepared and criticized chaotic attempts to evacuate civilians. Putin has so far been able to avoid major domestic unrest from the two-year war — despite the vast casualties it's inflicted on the Russian military. But the 2023 rebellion by the Russian mercenary group Wagner exposed Putin's vulnerability to blowback from events in Ukraine.

A man who missed the flight told Brazilian news outlet Globo that at least 10 people were waiting at the wrong gate and missed the flight before it took off. However, just because baking soda is produced from natural ingredients doesn’t mean it’s safe to ingest without regulation, she added. The primary way baking soda could be helpful for issues such as acid reflux is by neutralizing acid. There has also been some evidence to suggest baking soda may also slow the progression of kidney disease. Fitness studies have typically dosed within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 grams of baking soda per kilogram of body weight — meaning a person weighing about 59 kilograms, or 130 pounds, might use around a tablespoon of baking soda at a minimum. Baking soda supplementation isn’t the only way to alleviate acid-induced health problems.

Ukrainian forces pressed deeper into Russia on Friday, trying to capitalize on their surprise cross-border offensive, as Moscow moved quickly to shore up its defenses against the largest assault on Russian soil since the war began. After capturing several small settlements the last few days, Ukraine was battling to take full control of a town near the border and sending small units to conduct raids farther into the southwestern Russian region of Kursk. At the same time, the Russian military announced it was sending more troops and armored vehicles to try to repel the attack. Russian television released videos of columns of military trucks carrying artillery pieces, heavy machine guns and tanks. Perhaps preparing for retaliation, Ukrainian authorities on Friday said they were evacuating 20,000 people from the Sumy region, which sits across the border from Kursk.
