AdvertisementA 36-year-old American Airlines flight attendant was arrested Thursday on two charges related to claims he'd filmed a minor using an airplane bathroom, the US Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts said. A press release from the Department of Justice released Thursday says the claims involve an American Airlines flight to Boston from Charlotte, North Carolina, in September. A family says their daughter discovered a cellphone taped inside a toilet on an American Airlines flight in September. American Airlines said in a statement that Thompson had not worked for the airline since the September incident. Paul Llewellyn, an attorney representing the girl's family in their civil lawsuit against American Airlines, said the family is happy that police arrested Thompson.

"There's a difference between an accident caused by a human driver, and an accident caused by an autonomous system," said Majors. An American Airlines flight attendant was arrested on Thursday, accused of using his cellphone in an attempt to secretly record a 14-year-old girl as she used the lavatory on a domestic flight in September, federal prosecutors said. The flight attendant, Estes Carter Thompson III, 37, of Charlotte, N.C., was arrested in Lynchburg, Va., and charged with attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography after investigators found evidence that he had surreptitiously recorded video footage of four other girls as they used the lavatory on American Airlines flights last year, the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Massachusetts said. “The deeply disturbing conduct alleged here is something no parent or child should ever have to worry about when they travel,” Joshua S. Levy, the acting U.S. attorney for the district of Massachusetts, said in a statement. Thompson allegedly used his position to prey on and surreptitiously record innocent children, including unaccompanied minors, while in a vulnerable state aboard flights he was working.”According to a criminal complaint, Mr. Thompson was working as a flight attendant on an American Airlines flight to Boston from Charlotte on Sept. 2. About halfway through the flight, the 14-year-old girl got up to use a lavatory in the main cabin, the document says.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is a cultural phenomenon. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have been unable to shake the loyalty of voters to Trump. To understand Trump, however, it is also important to recognize that he has become a cultural phenomenon within large swaths of the GOP. To be sure, Trump is not the first president to command strong cultural currency with voters that goes beyond traditional political attachments. Yet there is no president who has devoted the same kind of attention to marketing himself as a cultural phenomenon as Trump.

(AP) — With bipartisan support, a proposed Louisiana congressional map that would create a second majority-Black district sailed through the state Senate on Wednesday and will advance to the House chamber for debate. A second majority-Black district could also result in another Democratic seat in Congress. Officials have until Jan. 30 to pass new congressional boundaries with a second majority-minority district in Louisiana. A judge on the district court signaled that she will create a map by herself if lawmakers don't complete the task. On the Senate floor Wednesday, Democrats raised concerns that under the proposed map, the Black voting-age population in Carter's district would decrease to 51%.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s huge win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday enshrines one of the most astonishing comebacks in American political history. His MAGA-hat wearing crowd greeted him with chants of “Trump, Trump, Trump” beneath two vast screens reading “Trump wins Iowa!”But the ex-president’s rebound is more stunning for another reason. Trump’s Iowa victory also sharpens the collision between the 2024 election and his legal imbroglio. His unhinged behavior, incessant shattering of rules and challenges to the law reinvigorated a brand perfectly tailored to Republican voters who despise “elites” in politics, government and the media. Trump’s victory will also give Russian President Vladimir Putin another reason to prolong the bloody war in Ukraine.

Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses was resounding enough to make the race for the Republican nomination look essentially finished at the start. But it wasn’t resounding enough to remove the sense that it could have been otherwise, that yet again his opposition within the Republican Party made things ridiculously easy for his candidacy. Trump is essentially running an incumbent’s campaign, presenting himself as the default leader of the party, declining to debate, rolling up endorsements. Eugene McCarthy’s 42 percent of the New Hampshire primary vote in 1968 forced Lyndon Johnson out of the race. Ted Kennedy’s 31 percent in Iowa and 37 percent in New Hampshire in 1980 betokened a long and bitter campaign for Jimmy Carter.

NEW YORK (AP) — The squabble over billion of dollars in overdraft fees that Americans get charged every year is intensifying. Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The long road to the Republican presidential nomination begins tonight in Iowa, where voters will gather at their neighborhood precinct caucuses to cast the first votes of the 2024 election campaign. Iowa may not have many voters or delegates, but the first-in-the-nation caucuses always attract a media frenzy. But tonight, Iowa voters seem likely to choose Donald J. Trump — someone they didn’t pick eight years ago, but who now appears poised for the largest victory in a contested Iowa Republican caucus. In 2016, Iowa voters rejected Mr. Trump in favor of Ted Cruz. And unlike most of the country, the Republican establishment in Iowa has not gone along with Mr. Trump.

Biden: US Does Not Support Taiwan Independence

By Steve Holland, Nandita Bose and Trevor HunnicuttWASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden said on Saturday the United States does not support the independence of Taiwan, after Taiwanese voters rebuffed China and gave the ruling party a third presidential term. "We do not support independence..." Biden said, when asked for reaction to Saturday's elections. The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 and has long said it does not support a formal declaration of independence by Taiwan. It does, however, maintain unofficial relations with the self-governed island and remains its most important backer and arms supplier. In a show of support for the government, Biden plans to dispatch an unofficial delegation to the self-governed island, according to a senior Biden administration official.
