Morning Bid: Refunding relief stokes bond-led bounce
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 23, 2023. But relief in Treasuries, the villain of the piece for several weeks, is probably the most significant marker for the remainder of the year. And there were further soothing noises for world bonds, even if not for global growth, from surprisingly weak Chinese business surveys for October. Overall, the picture pointed to another positive day for Wall Street stocks, with futures marginally positive ahead of the open as the Fed meeting gets underway. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.

The BOJ also revised its inflation outlook for Japan higher, forecasting core CPI to hit 2.8% and 1.7% for the fiscal years 2024 and 2025. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at the close of its two-day meeting Wednesday. But the Fed has been notoriously off the mark when it comes to predictions about monetary policy, writes CNBC's Jeff Cox.

CNBC Daily Open: Markets’ bounce may be short-lived

This report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our new, international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. But Goldman Sachs' chief equity strategist thinks such negative sentiment gives rise to a "buying opportunity," especially for a certain type of stock that boasts a healthy balance sheet . But not for Tesla Tesla shares sank nearly 5% after Panasonic said it was reducing production of electric batteries because of flagging demand for Tesla's vehicles. The spread in opinions may make the picture ahead murky, but, ironically, it does make one thing clear: markets are increasingly volatile.

Online job adverts fell by 1.6% in September from August, bucking the usual end-of-summer bounce in job postings, and advertised salaries fell by the same amount, Adzuna said. "September traditionally sees a surge in job market activity but the figures we're seeing this year could signal a cooling off of the job market, which had shown signs of resilience earlier in the year," Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter said. The Office for National Statistics said earlier this month its measure of job vacancies fell to a two-year low of 988,000 in the three months to September. Separately on Monday, a survey showed small businesses recovering a bit of their lost confidence but the overall mood remained negative. Martin McTague, FSB's national chair, said the survey showed signs of stabilisation after 18 months of surging costs.

The National Financial Work Conference, usually held twice a decade, is expected to further fortify leader Xi Jinping’s control of the country’s $61 trillion financial sector. “Overall, the financial sector in China has made progress but at this moment they face challenges,” said Nakao. Last week, Xi reportedly visited the central bank, or People’s Bank of China, a rare step that underscores the party’s consolidation of controls over markets and financial institutions. Country Garden, another major developer, failed last week to meet a deadline to pay interest on a dollar bond. It has adopted measures to support private industries, which provide the lion's share of jobs in China.

Before the Bell: What do investors need to know about investing in Native American and Alaskan Native communities? Dawson Her Many Horses: Native American and Alaskan Native communities are more than an ethnic group or racial category. The National League Gaming Commission, which is the regulator for Native American casinos, publishes a yearly report on gross gaming revenues for casinos. When you look at some of the research that gets done, Native American and Alaskan Native households are almost always the most underbanked. People like to focus on what I call the ‘poverty porn’ aspects of Native American and Alaskan Native communities.

Americans can’t get enough of Halloween candy. Halloween candy sales grew 14% between 2021 and 2022 and this year is on track to be the same. And in the world of chocolate, milk chocolate is king: more people bought milk chocolate last Halloween season than all other non-chocolate candy combined. But while per unit sales of chocolate candy have remained largely stable compared with five years ago, non-chocolate candy is the growth market. Americans bought roughly 7.8% more packages of non-chocolate candy last Halloween season compared to 2018, while package sales of chocolate shrank by 2.5%.

Morning Bid: Market bounce sets up Fed-dominated week ahead

A trader works on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 27, 2023. A worrying late-year stock market unwind is starkest in small-cap indexes (.RUT) now tracking year-to-date losses of some 7% - even as the benchmark S&P500 (.SPX) remains up 7% and Big Tech leaders of the Nasdaq 100 are still 30% (.NDX) higher. Annual earnings growth for S&P500 companies is now expected to have picked up to a 4.3% annual growth rate, according to LSEG estimates, from as low as 1.6% before the reporting season began. But beyond Fed policy rates, it's the restive bond market and near 16-year-high long-term borrowing costs that are starting to hurt most. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields held steady at 4.85% - well below the 5% threshold they breached last week.

New York CNN —The US Treasury Department said it expects to borrow $776 billion in the final quarter of this year, the most the government has ever borrowed during a fourth quarter. The forecast is $76 billion less than the estimate Treasury made in August due to higher-than-anticipated tax collections in October. The updated estimate likely means Treasury will issue fewer bonds this quarter than investors were bracing for. The Treasury also said it expects to borrow $816 billion in the first quarter of next year. Meanwhile, last quarter the government borrowed $1.01 trillion, or $277 billion more than the Treasury initially estimated in May.

World Rugby addressed that with a major overhaul of the calendar they described as "the most significant development in the sport since the game went professional" but those long-suffering countries are going to have to suffer for a few years yet before they start to feel the benefits. Elsewhere, England overcame a terrible build-up to win all their pool games and Fiji shocked Australia to go through alongside Wales. FABULOUS BRANDFiji's final pool game against Portugal was one of the best seen at a World Cup, with the Portuguese playing a fabulous brand of all-court rugby reminiscent of France at their pomp. Amid emotional scenes and roared on by neutrals the world over, they secured their first-ever World Cup victory in the last minute, with Fiji scraping through via their losing bonus point. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Former President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the World Series to former Texas Rangers catcher Iván “Pudge” Rodriguez, bouncing the throw from the front of the mound. When he was president, Bush famously threw out the first pitch of the first World Series game in New York after 9/11 terrorist attacks, making that toss from the rubber without a bounce. “Well, this is Texas,” Jeter said Friday in a brief interview from the tunnel behind the Texas dugout on the first-base side. Rodriguez was still playing the last time the Rangers reached the World Series in 2010 and 2011. They paired up before Game 4 of the 2010 World Series in Arlington, Texas, and Game 5 in Houston in 2017.

REUTERS/Gabriel Crossley/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Profits at China's industrial firms extended gains for a second month in September, adding to signs of a stabilising economy as the authorities launched a burst of supportive policy measures. For the first nine months, profits slid 9% from a year earlier, narrowing from a 11.7% decline in the first eight months, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Friday. A fall in producer prices last month indicated that some industrial firms were still cutting prices to promote sales, putting a drag on overall industrial revenues and profits, Zhou said. The improvement in industrial profits is expected to sustain in the coming months, partly due to the lag effect in domestic macro pump-priming, he added. Industrial profit numbers cover firms with annual revenues of at least 20 million yuan ($2.73 million) from their main operations.
