U.S. Treasury yields moved higher on Thursday as investors digested a range of comments by Federal Reserve officials and what they could mean for interest rates. It comes as traders increasingly bet on a September interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve, with a reduction in July now seen as highly unlikely. Earlier this week, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said interest rates would likely be cut before inflation reaches 2%.

CNN —An Illinois woman was fatally shot inside her home this month by a sheriff’s deputy who responded to her 911 call, and the deputy is now charged with murder in the case, a prosecutor said this week. Sangamon County sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy responded to the call around 12:50 a.m., authorities said. The sheriff’s office said the deputies, who were not injured, reported the shooting around 1:20 a.m. Crump’s office has said Massey was unarmed. When the two responding deputies encountered Massey, she “appeared to be calm, perhaps unwell, not aggressive,” the court document said. Sean Grayson has been fired from his job as a Sangamon County sheriff's deputy and faces murder and other charges in Sonya Massey's death, officials said.

Shares of Volvo Cars rose sharply on Thursday after the company reported a jump in annual operating profit for the second quarter. Core operating profit for the quarter came in at 8.2 billion Swedish kronor ($776 million), 28% higher than in the same quarter a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Volvo Cars' revenue dipped slightly in the second quarter, coming in at 101.5 billion Swedish kronor from 102.2 billion Swedish kronor over the same period of last year. In the first quarter of 2024, Volvo Cars had reported a 2% year-on-year decline in revenue. First-quarter operating profit had come in at 6.8 billion Swedish kronor, while retail car sales amounted to 182,687.

Turkey came out miles ahead of the rest of the world in an annual global wealth ranking — in a result that may come as surprising, given the country's high levels of inflation. The next-highest countries in terms of average wealth growth per adult were Russia and Qatar with nearly 20% and South Africa with just over 16%. But for Turks who own assets like homes, wealth has grown, as inflation pushes up the costs of those holdings. In a call with journalists, some of the report's authors broke down the relationship between inflation and wealth rises in Turkey. LONDON — The British pound on Wednesday broke above the $1.30 level against the U.S. dollar for the first time in a year, as investors bank on a coming period of growth-friendly policies and political stability under the newly elected Labour government. Sterling was 0.5% higher against the U.S. dollar at $1.303 at 1:04 p.m. in London (8:04 a.m. U.K. inflation came in at the Bank of England's 2% target for a second straight month, figures published earlier Wednesday showed. However, the inflation print slightly reduced market bets on an August rate cut from the central bank due to the stickiness of the key services print. The U.K. currency has also been supported by the recent landslide parliamentary victory for the Labour Party, according to analysts.

CNN —A Wisconsin man and his daughter were found dead in Canyonlands National Park in Utah on Friday after the pair got lost and ran out of water while hiking amid soaring temperatures. Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and his daughter, Beatriz Herrera, 23, were visiting the southeast Utah park from their home in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and hiking the Syncline Loop Trail where the temperature at the time was over 100 degrees, according to the National Park Service. The pair were found deceased just 15 minutes apart Friday shortly before 6 p.m. after the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the National Park Service “of a deceased hiker in the Upheaval Dome area of Canyonlands National Park,” a news release from the sheriff’s office said. The United States is experiencing a historically hot summer as the heat goes on a July killing spree. It’s been the hottest summer on record for around 100 US cities from Maine to California.
