Former US president and 2024 Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump arrives to speak at the Republican Party of Iowa's 2023 Lincoln Dinner at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 28, 2023. The dynamic between Trump and his would-be challengers has held firm even as Trump racks up criminal charges in multiple cases, with possible additional indictments forthcoming. Sununu said DeSantis would have show "charisma and leadership" in order to win the GOP primary. Despite the stream of GOP candidates in the state, former President Trump retains a polling edge. DeSantis has heavily touted after enacting plenty of conservative policies in Florida as a cornerstone of his candidacy, but New Hampshire Gov. Sununu recently argued that Trump polling below 50% in New Hampshire gave other candidates a huge opportunity to make the case for their respective candidacies. "Either you're willing to swing, you're willing to give the punch and take the punch and show leadership, or you're kowtowing," Sununu said during an interview on Fox News.

Republican Alan Pincus told WaPo that DeSantis may have tanked his political future in Florida over his 2024 bid. DeSantis once led Trump in earlier Florida surveys of the Republican presidential primary. But Trump has continued to dominate the GOP race and DeSantis has had to reboot his campaign. But even in the Sunshine State, he's fallen behind Trump — in a head-to-head contest, the latest Florida Atlantic University/Mainstreet Research survey had Trump leading DeSantis 54%-37%.

Consumers will win in cannabis-credit card clash

The $376 billion payments network wants its financial partners in transactions for cannabis to crack down on using its debit cards, Bloomberg reported on July 26. The budding industry is running out of convenient options for customers to pay for its products. By definition, payments networks such as Mastercard and Visa (V.N) are middlemen, facilitating the movement of money between parties. In the weed business, that means they take the money from the buyer’s bank account and ship it into the dispensary’s. In Washington, D.C., some cannabis shops peddle quasi-worthless knickknacks such as stickers to customers while “gifting” small amounts of pot.

GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has a secret talent, according to Politico: rapping. He performed an impromptu freestyle rap on "Fox & Friends" on Thursday for host Steve Doocy. Thankfully, the 37-year-old candidate appeared on Fox News' "Fox & Friends," where host Steve Doocy allowed Ramaswamy to share his gift with the world. Put on the spot, and without a beat, Ramaswamy entertained Doocy with a few short bars:"My name's Vivek, it rhymes with cake. Ramaswamy also recently spoke with radio host Michael Smerconish, who also pressed Ramaswamy to rap for him.

To end the war, some argue that Ukraine must make difficult territorial concessions to Russia. People in the United States, after all, do not vote for the president of Russia. The Biden administration has already authorized millions of dollars worth of assets from Russian oligarchs to be transferred to Ukraine. But it has refrained from touching Russia's Central Bank foreign currency reserves, which are estimated to be about $38 billion in the United States alone (and $215 billion in the European Union). As Financial Times economic commentator Martin Sandbu wrote last month, seizing state assets for reparations is an unproven legal strategy.

AMC can build Dreamhouse on Barbenheimer buzz

AMC Entertainment (AMC.N), the struggling movie theater chain wrestling with a meme-stock hangover, saw its busiest day since 2019 this past Saturday. The company needs cash to survive, and this weekend might add enough fantasy to help it. AMC has refiled to try again, and in some ways, Barbenheimer helps. The biggest risk to the movie theater business was that it would never return to pre-pandemic levels. AMC Entertainment, one of the U.S.’s largest theater chains, recorded over 7 million moviegoers in attendance over that weekend.

GOP donors are eyeing Tim Scott's 2024 candidacy after campaign stumbles by both Trump and DeSantis. But Scott's current position has a clear upside, as potential supporters and prospective GOP donors are giving his campaign a closer look after stumbles by both Trump and DeSantis. So Scott's nascent campaign has become a potential alternative to a DeSantis candidacy among some Republicans, according to The New York Times. Sabin, who's hosting a fundraiser for affluent donors in the Hamptons in August, expressed frustration with both Trump and DeSantis. The businessman said that prospective donors were eyeing Scott's candidacy and "all want to see what he's about."

CNN —Seven Republican presidential candidates have, as of Sunday, met the polling requirements to appear on the August debate stage following new polling from Fox Business in Iowa and South Carolina. Ron DeSantis, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Chris Christie have each reached 1% or higher in at least two qualifying national polls and two qualifying state polls from separate states, which is a requirement set by the Republican National Committee. Sununu said Trump's frontrunner status won't shift if GOP candidates aren't willing to go after him. "That's 60% of the voters right now that are not with Trump in New Hampshire," he said on Fox News. Chris Sununu on Saturday said that the crop of GOP presidential candidates going up against former President Donald Trump can defeat the ex-commander-in-chief if they're willing to go after him. "That's 60% of the voters right now that are not with Trump in New Hampshire," Sununu remarked while on-air. CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting. But the FEC – which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans – often struggles to agree on enforcement actions. But that perhaps is not surprising – given how large Trump, his former boss-turned-nemesis, looms over the hard-core Republican base. How is Trump making money these days?

CLAREMONT, N.H. — Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is laying out plans to shut down a number of federal government agencies if elected, starting with the FBI, Department of Education and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Ramaswamy says his plan does not require rebuilding anything, but rather reorganizing. “In many cases, these agencies are redundant relative to functions that are already performed elsewhere in the federal government,” Ramaswamy said in an interview with NBC News. Eliminating federal agencies has become a recurring talking point in Republican primaries for years — most famously when then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry said in a 2011 GOP debate that he would eliminate three agencies but couldn’t remember one of them.

Shares in Coinbase got a major boost after money management behemoth BlackRock (BLK.N) applied to launch a bitcoin-backed exchange-traded fund this month with Coinbase as its custodian. Coinbase shares are up nearly 54% in July, handily beating the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC), which rose 4%. Price targets range widely: analysts polled by Refinitiv think Coinbase is worth anywhere from $8 billion to nearly $50 billion. Coinbase investors would therefore be unwise to count on a judge delivering Coinbase a win. Given bitcoin’s current $584 billion market capitalization, that suggests $74 billion of ETFs would not be much of a stretch.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Donald Trump is dominating the U.S. Republican presidential nomination contest with 47% support within his party, well above 19% for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. Slideshow ( 3 images )The seven-day poll completed on Monday showed Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2021, rising from a June Reuters/Ipsos poll when he was the pick of 43% of Republicans. Ramaswamy, who only had 3% support in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in June, has been putting considerable sums of his own money toward promoting his candidacy. Neither Biden nor Trump were widely liked by people outside their parties. Still, Biden leads the Democratic contest by even more than Trump leads the Republican field, with 63% of Democrats’ support compared with 15% for anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Earlier Tuesday, DeSantis said that Trump “could’ve come out more forcefully” to stop the insurrection on January 6, 2021. DeSantis told Tapper on Tuesday that he has the resources to compete in the face of reports from over the weekend about his financial position. Over the weekend, a spokesperson for DeSantis’ campaign confirmed to CNN it let go of some staffers, after Politico reported that “fewer than 10 staffers” in event planning were cut on Thursday. “I would respect everybody, but what I wouldn’t do is turn society upside down to be able to accommodate, which is a very, very small percentage of the population,” DeSantis told CNN.

Meme investors could spoil AMC’s next act

AMC is already fighting another lawsuit over its attempt to convert preferred stock into common shares, a novel scheme to avoid getting investors’ approval for share sales. It fits with other forays since AMC became a retail-favorite meme stock – like buying into a gold miner – that seem to disregard conventional governance niceties. Attracting a rush of retail traders means there are plenty of investors to call foul. If their push against the preferred stock gambit succeeds, AMC could struggle to raise new funds, which bodes poorly for repaying its $5 billion in debt. It turns out that, for a meme stock’s final act, the audience starts throwing tomatoes.

Vivek Ramsawamy, an entrepreneur running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Monday will release a list of potential choices for the U.S. Supreme Court, in an effort to highlight his conservative credentials to early-state voters who may be skeptical of a candidate without a political background. Mr. Ramaswamy’s list, reported earlier by Axios, includes jurists who have ruled on various aspects of the Republican culture wars, including religious issues, free speech, vaccine mandates and transgender rights. In a statement, Mr. Ramaswamy sought to contrast his approach to that of President Biden, who vowed during his campaign to appoint the first Black woman to the highest court, which he did when he nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson. Mr. Ramaswamy dismissed that move as “purely skin-deep diversity.”“What each of the individuals I would appoint share is their unwavering dedication to the principles of originalism and commitment to a constitutionalist judicial philosophy,” Mr. Ramaswamy said. “Our courts are the last line of defense against an administrative state that rules by fiat, legislates from the bench, stifling freedom and truth.”

All major federal initiatives were circumscribed by the Constitution and required legislation by both houses of Congress followed by the president’s signature.
