What comes up must come down — at least in the case of user engagement on Threads, Meta 's new Twitter competitor. "The Threads launch really did 'break the internet,' or at least the Sensor Tower models," Anthony Bartolacci, managing director at Sensor Tower, a marketing intelligence firm, told CNBC. "In the 10-plus years Sensor Tower has been estimating app installs, the first 72 hours of Threads was truly in a class by itself." Threads saw a dropoff of more than 25% in daily active users between its July 7 peak and Monday for Threads users on Android phones worldwide. Since its debut on July 5, Threads made headlines for its Instagram sign-up integration, algorithmic feed and positive sentiment from advertisers.

Apple just released a public preview of its big iPhone update, iOS 17, which includes several big changes, including better autocorrect, a landscape docking mode and offline apps. Here's what to do:Make sure your phone can install iOS 17, which it probably can if you bought it after 2018 or have an iPhone XS or newer. The option to select the iOS 17 public beta will be in a dropdown menu. Apple's iOS public beta has most of the features that will be included in the final release version but isn't ready for everyone yet.

A group of lawmakers led by Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren are calling on the Biden administration to investigate how tax prep software companies may have illegally shared customer data with tech platforms Google and Meta . Some statements the tax prep companies provided to the publications at the time seemed to indicate the data sharing was done accidentally. Our system is designed to filter out potentially sensitive data it is able to detect." Among their findings released Wednesday, the lawmakers said that millions of taxpayers' information had been shared with Big Tech firms through the tax prep software and that both the tax prep companies and tech firms were "reckless" in how they handled sensitive information. Although Meta and Google both said they have filters to catch sensitive data that's inadvertently collected, they seemed to be "ineffective," the lawmakers wrote.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino said the platform had its "largest usage day" in five months. The Twitter higher-ups appear to be concerned by the rapid popularity of Threads. Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino said Monday that last week saw the platform's "largest usage day" since February. That appeared to be a taunt aimed at Threads, the Twitter competitor app released by Meta last Wednesday which is estimated to already have reached 100 million users. This week, Musk tweeted "Zuck is a cuck" and proposed a "literal dick measuring contest."

Meta, Alphabet and Amazon , the leaders in online advertising, are all betting generative AI will eventually be core to their businesses. In May, Meta announced its AI Sandbox testing suite for companies to more easily use generative AI software to create background images and experiment with different advertising copy. However, Shaked said he's "not sold on the creative piece yet," regarding Meta's nascent foray into providing generative AI tools for advertisers. Jay Pattisall, an analyst at Forrester, said several major hurdles prevent generative AI from having a major immediate impact on the online ad industry. Stacy Reed, an online advertising and Facebook ads consultant, is currently incorporating generative AI into her daily work.

Fitbit's Versa line of wearables remains some of the best fitness trackers on the market. Because Fitbit stopped selling the Versa 3, you may even consider a refurbished model of the device instead of upgrading to the Versa 4. Despite taking over a wearable lineup that included premium smartwatch lines like the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa, Google released its own namesake wearable in 2022 called the Google Pixel Watch. Google Pixel Watch vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Smartwatch performanceRick Stella/InsiderThe Pixel Watch relies on Wear OS for most day-to-day tasks, which makes it about as good of a smartwatch as you can get. Google Pixel Watch vs. Fitbit Sense 2: Health and fitness trackingRick Stella/InsiderWhen it comes to health and fitness tracking, the Sense 2 is the clear winner. The Fitbit app is also available for use with the Google Pixel Watch, but functionally, the Pixel just can't beat Fitbit at its own game.
