A recent string of plane safety incidents has made many more concerned about flying. Right-wing commentators including Elon Musk have baselessly decided that DEI initiatives are to blame. AdvertisementRight-wing commentators have a new theory to explain the recent series of high-profile plane safety incidents — and they are claiming that diversity initiatives are to blame. Conservative commentators have converged around the idea that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are jeopardizing plane safety, baselessly claiming that underqualified minorities have been promoted in the industry. AdvertisementExperts say that it is not just misguided to blame DEI initiatives for a reduction in the quality of workers, but also that it is less entrenched than its critics imagine.

By Philip PullellaVATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Friday defended a Vatican document on blessings for same-sex couples but said they were not an approval of a lifestyle the Church sees as potentially sinful but of individuals seeking to get closer to God. The pope said that while "moral perfection" was not required of people seeking such blessings, they were not intended to justify a relationship the Church considers irregular. Francis stressed that such blessings should not be given in a liturgical context. Since his election in 2013, Francis has tried to make the Church, with its 1.35 billion members, more welcoming to LGBT people, without changing moral doctrine. Francis said that when the blessings are given, priests should "naturally take into account the context, the sensitivities, the places where one lives and the most appropriate ways to do it".

Our experts answer readers' personal loan questions and write unbiased product reviews (here's how we assess personal loans). After our relationship got to a point where we realized we were better off as friends, we researched how to get out of a domestic partnership, and it's pretty simple. I took out a personal loan for debt consolidationDuring the time we were domestic partners, we took out a debt consolidation loan for $25,000 from Lending Club in June 2022. The loan was for $25,000, and it was taken out as a personal loan that we were using for debt consolidation. The reason we went into a domestic partnership was partly romantic and partly practical.

New York CNN —The growing battle between Ivy League institutions and frustrated alumni is now playing out at Cornell University. A prominent alumnus and longtime donor is calling for the immediate resignations of Cornell President Martha Pollack and Provost Michael Kotlikoff, arguing the university’s diversity policies have created a “toxic” environment. Jon Lindseth, an emeritus member of Cornell’s board of trustees, penned an open letter demanding university leaders clean house. Lindseth’s criticism of Cornell’s DEI policies are supported by the Cornell Free Speech Alliance, an alumni group founded in August 2021 pushing to reform the university. While the website for Cornell’s board of trustees does indicate meetings are scheduled, university officials say these are not emergency meetings.

London CNN —Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman and his wife Neri Oxman are buying a stake in Tel Aviv’s stock market in what the exchange said Wednesday was a “strong vote of confidence” in Israel’s economy. The couple have agreed to buy a stake of nearly 5% in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), joining other buyers of around 17 million shares in total, the exchange said in a statement. But his latest investment suggests he is optimistic about the prospects for Israeli companies despite the country’s ongoing war against Hamas. The value of stocks listed on the exchange has swung wildly since October 7, the day Hamas launched its deadly attack on Israel. A report by Business Insider in early January alleged that Oxman had plagiarized parts of her doctoral dissertation.

New York CNN —Israeli hostage posters that were hung up at Harvard University had been vandalized with antisemitic messages just as students returned from winter break. Footage shared with CNN by Harvard student Alexander Kestenbaum shows a handful of hostage posters defaced with messages such as “Israel did 9/11.” A poster of a four-year-old Israeli hostage was defaced, while “LIES FAKE” was scrawled over another hostage poster. Photos and videos geolocated by CNN indicate the vandalized posters were hung just outside Holworthy Hall, a first-year student dorm located on the northern edge of Harvard Yard. Opinion | We Need a New Word for ‘Plagiarism’
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( John Mcwhorter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
They are boilerplate statements in books or academic papers whose reuse is only uncovered through the use of high-tech language searches. I, for one, would be quite OK with someone else lifting boilerplate statements from my work. In an alternative universe in which we had two words for “plagiarism,” that entire discussion could have been clearer and more efficient. There is no reason the new term has to be a formal one derived from Latin like “plagiarism” — or “duplicative language” for that matter. Perhaps we already have the term: “cutting and pasting” — as distinct from, rather than a form of, plagiarism.

A Harvard task force on antisemitism has gotten off to a rocky start, with complaints that the professor chosen to help lead the panel had signed a letter that was critical of Israel, describing it as “under a regime of apartheid.”Harvard’s new interim president, Alan Garber, announced the formation of two “presidential task forces” forces on Friday, one to combat antisemitism and the other to combat Islamophobia. The move came less than a month after his predecessor, Claudine Gay, was forced to step down over plagiarism accusations and criticism that she was weak on reining in antisemitism. Dr. Garber’s choice for co-chair of the antisemitism task force, Derek J. Penslar, a professor of Jewish history at Harvard, met with immediate opposition from Lawrence H. Summers, a former Harvard president, and Bill Ackman, a hedge fund manager whose relentless criticism of Dr. Gay helped bring about her downfall. Dr. Penslar was among nearly 2,900 academics, clergy members and other public figures who signed an open letter in early August, before the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, condemning the Israeli government and saying it was determined to “ethnically cleanse all territories under Israeli rule of their Palestinian population.” The letter said that “Meanwhile, American Jewish billionaire funders help support the Israeli far right.”

BOSTON (AP) — Harvard University has shed fresh light on the ongoing investigation into plagiarism accusations against former president Claudine Gay, including that an independent body recommended a broader review after substantiating some of the complaints. In a letter Friday to a congressional committee, Harvard said it learned of the plagiarism allegations against its first Black female president on Oct. 24 from a New York Post reporter. The school reached out to several authors whom Gay is accused of plagiarizing and none objected to her language, it said. Harvard then appointed the independent body, which focused on two of Gay's articles published in 2012 and 2017. The House committee announced days later that it would investigate the policies and disciplinary procedures at Harvard, MIT and Penn.

Donald J. Trump plumbed new depths of degradation in his savage takedown of Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a yearlong campaign of emasculation and humiliation that helped force one of the party’s rising stars out of the presidential race after just one contest and left him to pick up the pieces of his political future. In front of enormous rally audiences, Mr. Trump painted Mr. DeSantis as a submissive sniveler, insisting that he had cried and begged “on his knees” for an endorsement in the 2018 Florida governor’s race. In a series of sexually charged attacks, Mr. Trump suggested — without a shred of proof — that Mr. DeSantis wore high heels, that he might be gay and that perhaps he was a pedophile. He promised that intense national scrutiny would leave Mr. DeSantis whining for “mommy.”Mr. DeSantis shied from fighting back, which only inflicted more pain on his campaign.

New York CNN —Famed economist Larry Summers slammed Harvard’s top leaders on Sunday over concerns about how the Ivy League school is fighting antisemitism. Summers, a former president of Harvard, strongly criticized the selection of Harvard professor Derek Penslar as the co-chair of a newly-formed presidential task force on antisemitism. “I have lost confidence in the determination and ability of the Harvard Corporation and Harvard leadership to maintain Harvard as a place where Jews and Israelis can flourish,” Summers said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The task forces will be charged with examining bias, determining root causes and compiling recommendations to combat hate. “As things currently stand, I am unable to reassure Harvard community members, those we are recruiting or prospective students that Harvard is making progress in countering anti-Semitism,” Summers said.
