Remains of the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in deep water, and perhaps the oldest complete wreck in any water, have been located in the Mediterranean Sea about 56 miles off the coast of northern Israel. The Israel Antiquities Authority, which announced the find on Thursday, said that preliminary examination of two clay jars known as Canaanite amphorae indicated that the merchant vessel, an estimated 39 to 46 feet long, sank sometime between 1400 B.C. and 1300 B.C., an epoch when the Egyptian empire stretched from what is now northern Syria to Sudan, and the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun briefly sat on the throne. Whether the galley was the victim of a sudden storm, a wayward wind or attempted piracy is unclear. No spectacular new finds have surfaced since then.

Crew members haven’t been able to get off the ship for a variety of reasons. Bennett’s email identifies the eight eligible crew members, which include a cook, a fitter and an oiler. As part of the deal, those crew members will not need to stay in Baltimore. But with the new agreement Wednesday night, the eight crew members would be able to leave the country before they’re deposed. But it’s still unclear exactly when the eight crew members – and the rest of their colleagues – will be able to leave.

The average monthly US electricity bill this summer will be 3% higher than last year, the EIA says. AdvertisementThe possibility of a warmer-than-typical summer will make energy prices higher, the US Energy Information Administration said in a new report. The EIA finds that the average US electricity bill from June through August will be $173, a 3% climb over last year. The biggest dollar-amount increase will be seen in Mid-Atlantic states, where the average bill will rise by $14, the EIA said. In September, a Texas heat wave sent spot electricity prices up 20,000% and caused the state's grid operator to issue an emergency.

Hong Kong CNN —Manila has accused China of injuring Filipino personnel and damaging Philippine vessels during a South China Sea collision earlier this week, as tensions simmer over territorial disputes in the resource-rich and strategically important waterway. CNN has reached out to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard for comment. China claims “indisputable sovereignty” over almost all of the South China Sea, and most of the islands and sandbars within it, including many features that are hundreds of miles from mainland China. A supply ship and two rubber boats from the Philippines had attempted to “illegally” deliver supplies to the stranded warship, China Coast Guard spokesperson Gan Yu said. China’s Coast Guard also said it took measures including “warnings and interceptions, boarding inspections and forced evictions” against the Philippine vessels.

CNN —Another “mysterious” monolith has been spotted. This time, on a Las Vegas hiking trail in Nevada, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). “How did it get up there?”The monolith was found over the weekend near Gass Peak north of Las Vegas, it added. The last full day of spring will feel more like deep summer across much of the eastern half of the country. Humidity will make the air feel even hotter, and nighttime temperatures are expected to remain uncommonly high. The springtime heat, which will linger through at least the weekend in part of the region, has already caught some cities off guard. Inland New England and upstate New York began to swelter this week even before cities closer to the coast. In Rochester, N.Y., the heat index — an indication of how the air feels, accounting for humidity — soared higher on Tuesday than in San Antonio or St. Petersburg, Fla.

Spaceflight veterans Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station aboard the Starliner on June 6. It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months. But the situation makes for a moment of uncertainty and embarrassment that joins a long list of similar blunders by the Boeing Starliner program, which is already years behind schedule. The Starliner spacecraft on NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test is pictured docked to the Harmony module's forward port on June 13 as the International Space Station orbited 262 miles above Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The first Starliner test mission, flown without crew in late 2019, was riddled with missteps.

China claims “indisputable sovereignty” over almost all of the South China Sea, and most of the islands and sandbars within it, including many features that are hundreds of miles from mainland China. China had “obstructed the Philippines from executing a lawful maritime operation in the South China Sea, interfering with the Philippines’ freedom of navigation,” Campbell said, according to a State Department readout. The Chinese coast guard on Monday said a Philippine supply ship “ignored China’s repeated solemn warnings” and “deliberately and dangerously” approached a Chinese vessel in “an unprofessional manner,” resulting in a collision. China Coast Guard spokesperson Gan Yu on Monday accused the Philippines of “illegally” delivering supplies to the stranded warship. A US-based lawyer who has represented accused Chinese money launderers said the tempo of law enforcement operations against the alleged launderers has increased in recent weeks as federal agents close in on “bigger fish” among Chinese money launderers in the US. None of the federal law enforcement agencies involved in tracking Chinese money launderers agreed to be interviewed on the record. Tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal areas of Texas and northeastern Mexico. The storm was in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and was headed west toward northeastern Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center. The market has been on a tear in 2024, driven higher by robust corporate earnings and the artificial intelligence boom. The data will tell us that, but I think the big takeaway for us is [inflation] going in the right direction. Do you expect some of the cash that’s on the sidelines to enter the stock market?
