Job seekers in today's competitive labor market are feeling whiplash compared to flush times during the Great Resignation, but new compensation data shows some roles are on the rebound. Businesses are on a hiring tear for three roles in particular — machine learning engineers, technical recruiters and office managers — so much so that they're raising the salaries they need to pay in order to attract the right talent. That's according to a new data analysis from Greenhouse, the hiring platform, and Pave, a compensation management platform. "Companies in general are just really hyper focused on, you know, profitability and how they can make their companies the most efficient," he adds. Here's how much salaries have changed for these jobs, and what that means for future hiring demand.

NASA officials called off the spacewalk because of a water leak in the cooling unit of one of the astronauts’ spacesuits. Scott Wren, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, recently noted that market breadth is abnormally narrow. He found that the five best performers in the S&P 500 accounted for nearly three-fifths of its exceptional 10.6% year-to-date gain through May 31. That fate will soon apply to the S&P 500, Wren warned. Such a sell-off would take the S&P 500 below 5,000 for the first time since April. "And it's tough to be patient when the S&P 500 set a bunch of all-time high records."

Leopatrizi | E+ | Getty ImagesMore built-for-rent single-family homes are being constructed in the U.S., according to the National Association of Home Builders, and experts say this is in part due to the housing affordability crisis. Construction began on about 18,000 single-family, built-for-rent homes in the first quarter of 2024, a 20% jump compared with the first quarter of 2023, according to NAHB, which analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design. Single-family built-for-rent starts grew to 90,000 units in 2023, up from 81,000 units in 2022, the National Association of Realtors reported. The growing share of built-for-rent single-family homes is a response to demand from "people who can't afford today's very expensive, out-of-reach housing market," Lautz said. Homeowners are also responsible for shouldering "hidden costs" that aren't figured into a mortgage payment, such as maintenance, repairs, taxes and insurance.
