Trump took a dim view of the Powell Fed during his first term in office, calling policymakers "boneheads" and once compared Powell to a golfer who couldn't putt. Powell, who was nominated by Trump in November 2017 and took office the following February, largely shrugged off the criticism then, and he again deflected Thursday. However, dealing with the ramifications of a Trump presidency will be almost unavoidable for the Fed leader. LaVorgna has a unique perspective on the situation, having served as chief economist for the National Economic Council under Trump. Trump historically has favored lower rates, though that too could change if the Fed cuts and inflation rises.

Major public health groups, including the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC, soon supported the use of fluoridated water. Cavity prevention, experts say, is a major public health coup. “There’s not any evidence that fluoride has lowered the IQ of kids,” said Dr. David Margolius, Cleveland’s director of public health. In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Jonathan Allen explains why Democrats need to retool their economic message during Donald Trump's second term. Plus, senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon writes that the battle to succeed Trump in four years is already underway. How Trump broke both parties — and where Democrats go from hereBy Jonathan AllenOver the course of the last decade, President-elect Donald Trump broke both national political parties. Before Trump, Democrats nominated — and the country twice elected — Barack Obama, a candidate who ran against leaders that walked the country into forever wars and a finance-and-housing crisis that nearly toppled the economy. Harris’ economic policy offerings were largely expansions of Biden proposals, such as more generous homebuyer and child tax credits than he called for.

In the near term, the election will have no effects on our policy decisions.
The recommendation coincides with a new report finding asymptomatic bird flu infection in some workers. Those cases were discovered using blood, or serology, testing and seem to have been transmitted from sick animals, not people. To date, 46 people have been diagnosed with bird flu, also known as H5N1, in the United States this year. Of those 115, eight (7%) had antibodies showing they’d been infected with the bird flu. Until now, workers who had a known exposure to bird flu but didn’t have symptoms haven’t been routinely tested.

“The fact that there could have been a South Asian woman in the White House … we’re not there yet, but it would have been very nice. “There’s a great deal of disappointment in that sense,” said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the nonprofit South Asian Network. Like many young and progressive Asian Americans, she said Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip has been an important issue for her. The Federal Reserve would likely respond to inflation by raising interest rates to curb demand. In an economic chain reaction, households would then pay higher interest rates on borrowing of all kinds as the Fed moves to tame that newly rekindled inflation. That led to the 30-year fixed mortgage rate rising, meaning homebuyers are on track to see higher interest rates on loans. An analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that Trump's policies would decrease posttax incomes by an average of $1,800 in 2025. Trump's win is also expected to influence the Federal Reserve's upcoming decisions on interest rates.

Donald Trump owns 16 golf courses across three continents, mostly with vibrant social-media presences. AdvertisementAt President-elect Donald Trump's golf courses, his election posed a dilemma: Embrace the connection, or stay quiet? International courses in Dubai and Indonesia also kept quiet, as did the US courses in Los Angeles County and Hudson Valley, New York. But his victory does put a spotlight back on Trump's business empire, where companies could use the connections as a selling point or try to function like a business without a famous owner. Reuters estimated earlier this year that Trump's golf and resort business is the biggest driver of the Trump Organization's cash flow.
