Consumers who try to buy popular weight loss drugs online without a prescription risk being scammed or receiving unsafe products, a new study shows. Shortages of the popular weight loss medication, which belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1s, have led to “a black market of illegal knockoffs,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, the founder, medical director and research director of True You Weight Loss, a weight loss clinic in Cary, North Carolina. Medicare doesn’t cover the drugs when prescribed for weight loss, and many state Medicaid plans heavily restrict coverage. Online scamsSome websites purporting to be online pharmacies take consumers’ money but never deliver the medications, according to the study. Consumers won’t get that sort of care if they buy drugs online without seeing a health care provider.

He said the VA is legally bound to recover special separation benefits from veterans before those eligible can begin receiving disability payments. The VA had to recoup separation pay from 8,130 veterans in fiscal year 2020 and 8,550 in 2021. In 2021, the Veterans Benefits Administration began scanning all veterans’ service and medical records into electronic files, which “reduces the likelihood of this situation reoccurring,” Hayes said. Unique exceptions to the lawVeterans have a chance to pursue a waiver of their recoupment responsibilities for only certain special separation benefits under the law. In 2023, the Navy authorized reducing the amount of disability pay that is withheld while voluntary separation pay is recouped, Navy spokesperson Charlie Spirtos said.

"That was unique," Ronald Rowe Jr., the acting director of the Secret Service, said Friday. The Secret Service has faced intense scrutiny in the wake of the incident. The Secret Service initially blamed local law enforcement but later conceded it was ultimately the agency's responsibility to ensure the building was covered. Secret Service personnel were in one command post, with a member of the Pennsylvania State Police, and their local partners were in an entirely separate space. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last month in the wake of the attack and after a contentious House hearing about the attempt.

NASA this week has been discussing the possibility of returning Starliner empty and instead using SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to return its astronauts. The Boeing crew flight was initially planned to last a minimum of nine days. NASA previously noted that SpaceX serves as a backup but has sought to deemphasize that possibility, calling Boeing’s spacecraft the “primary option” for return. Already, Boeing’s Starliner losses total more than $1.5 billion due to repeated setbacks and years of delays in developing the spacecraft. If NASA backs Boeing and returns Wilmore and Williams on Starliner, the agency is accepting a currently unquantifiable amount of risk.

The team has been under a cloud of suspicion since The New York Times reported in April that 23 swimmers tested positive for a banned heart drug before the 2021 Tokyo Games. The issue has also prompted a diplomatic spat between the U.S. on one side and China, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on the other. "Chinese swimmers are clean and have never feared testing," the spokesperson said. A college student visiting the Grand Canyon died after an accidental fall near a scenic overlook, park officials said Thursday. The park service said it is investigating the incident with the local medical examiner’s office and no additional details were immediately available. According to National Park Service data, there were 205 fatal falls across the entire park system between 2014 and 2019, the most recent year available. At Grand Canyon National Park, which has recorded millions of visitors annually for decades, there were 14 deaths in the same period. An NBC News analysis last year found that Washington state's North Cascades National Park had the highest fatality rate in the country.

The international agency charged with regulating seabed mining worldwide voted on Friday to replace its top executive, after accusations that the British lawyer running the agency was too closely aligned with the mining industry. Leticia Carvalho, an oceanographer from Brazil and a United Nations environmental regulator, was elected by a 79-to-34 vote by the nations that run the International Seabed Authority to replace Michael Lodge, a lawyer who has overseen the agency for nearly eight years. “I can’t wait to start to work with state parties and stakeholders at this honorable organization,” Ms. Carvalho said after the vote, which was done by secret ballot. Mr. Lodge has been a polarizing figure at the seabed authority, which has jurisdiction over any future mining in international waters. Environmentalists have argued that he worked behind the scenes with private contractors to try to accelerate the start of mining.

The data also points a spotlight on the economic platform of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is poised to accept the Democratic presidential nomination this month amid signs of a slowing economy. But her economic views are less defined, maintaining broad references to strengthening the middle class, even as her record investigating Wall Street and her farther-left 2019 primary campaign platform have executives and investors on edge. According to those close to Harris, advisers and administration officials, Harris’ economic views were described as “pragmatic,” “centrist,” and even “pro-business,” with a goal of leveraging private-sector friendships for better outcomes at the ground level. The convicted assassin who was the linchpin of the biggest prisoner swap in decades is a member of the most powerful security agency in Russia, the Kremlin acknowledged on Friday, and had served in a special unit with some agents who now guard President Vladimir V. Putin. The ties help explain Mr. Putin’s determination to free the assassin, Vadim Krasikov, from the German prison where he was serving time for murder. The effort culminated on Thursday when Mr. Krasikov and seven other former prisoners returned to Moscow after an exchange with Western nations that involved 24 adults and seven countries. Mr. Putin has not hid his admiration for Mr. Krasikov, who had been jailed in Germany since 2019 for the murder of a Chechen former separatist fighter in Berlin. In an interview in February, Mr. Putin referred to Mr. Krasikov as “a patriot” who was doing his duty by eliminating an enemy of the Russian state.

According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. And an NBC News review of hiring practices around the country shows that there is a patchwork of hiring standards that vary from state to state and from community to community. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. In Illinois, in addition to its state law, city councils and county commissions can also set their own stricter hiring rules. Using the California hiring standards as a model, Guller tells his clients to send seasoned investigators out to interview a person’s former romantic partners, neighbors, employers and even patrons at their favorite bars.

Jade Gao | Afp | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China is not planning additional stimulus for the second half of the year, according to officials from the economic planning agency and finance ministry. Those official figures have raised concerns about whether China can achieve its full-year target of around 5% growth. China will put "promoting consumption in a more prominent role," Yuan Da, deputy secretary-general of the National Development and Reform Commission, told reporters Thursday in Mandarin, translated by CNBC. He reiterated that authorities would work for the "healthy" development of real estate and ensuring the delivery of pre-sold apartments. For example, Lu'an City in Anhui province announced Thursday it was issuing 1.5 million yuan in coupons for discounts on eating out at restaurants, 3 million yuan for buying home goods and 3 million yuan for car purchases.

The Russian officials took the proposal back to Moscow. It was a remarkably swift conclusion to years of painstaking negotiations between the US and more than half a dozen countries. Key to the deal was President Biden’s ability to persuade German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to release Krasikov, the Russian prisoner most keenly sought by Putin. Officials worked quietly throughout this year to get the German government to agree to release Krasikov — including entreaties from both Biden and Harris. President Biden sent a letter to Scholz in April, and the Germans at last agreed to release Krasikov in early June.

CNN —Alleged Sinaloa cartel cofounder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada appeared Thursday in federal court in Texas for his latest hearing since his arrest a week ago in an intrigue-packed case centered on one of the world’s most powerful and deadly drug trafficking organizations. He was arrested the prior day in El Paso alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, the 38-year-old son of infamous cartel boss and founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The scene outside the courthouse in El Paso showed a heavy security presence, with federal agents and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling the perimeter. Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman’s assertion raised new questions about why Guzmán López flew to Texas if he had no cooperation agreement with American authorities. “Joaquín Guzmán López forcibly kidnapped my client,” attorney Frank Pérez said in a statement.

CNBC's Jim Cramer examined Thursday's market action, attributing the day's brutal sell-off to the Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates steady instead of making a cut. "To me, today's terrible action in stocks was a function of the Fed not cutting rates yesterday," he said. Although Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated a rate cut was "on the table" in September, many on Wall Street feared that would be too late. The "soft economy" is new, he added, saying last year at this time Wall Street criticized the Fed for being unable to tame inflation. "I have better things to do with my time than lambaste a Fed chief for conceivably letting the economy wither for seven more weeks," Cramer said.

While Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, Texas and California already had laws regulating deepfakes, Minnesota updated their law this year to require a candidate to forfeit their office or nomination if they violate the state’s deepfake laws, among other provisions. In states such as New York, New Mexico and Alabama, victims can seek a court order to stop the content. Katie Hobbs signed his proposal into law in May, along with another AI bill that requires disclosures in campaign ads. Big Tech has already taken some steps to moderate deepfake content. TikTok and Meta (the parent company of Instagram, Threads and Facebook) announced plans in recent months to label AI content, while YouTube requires creators to disclose when videos are AI-created.

The two individuals were credentialed, the Secret Service said, adding that there was no “protective interest with these individuals.”The agency determined there was “never a threat to the former president,” a Secret Service spokesperson told CNN. The former president ultimately took the stage alone and no indication of a potential security issue was relayed to the crowd. Federal regulators have determined that Amazon can be held responsible for defective goods sold by third-party merchants on its online marketplace, rejecting the company's position that it's merely an intermediary between consumers and sellers. Amazon's marketplace, which hosts millions of third-party sellers, now accounts for approximately 60% of the company's e-commerce sales. The company has previously said it invests hundreds of millions of dollars per year to ensure products sold are safe and compliant. At issue were 418,818 goods sold through Amazon, including faulty carbon monoxide detectors, hairdryers without electrocution protection and children's sleepwear that posed a burn risk. This program gives Amazon "far-reaching control" over the products sold on its platform, the judge said.

The acting Secret Service director told senators on Tuesday that the agency failed on July 13 by not having a countersniper focused on the roof where a would-be assassin fired eight shots at former President Donald J. Trump, injuring him and others and killing a rally attendee. While Ronald L. Rowe Jr., the acting director, provided a more complete account of what happened that day than his predecessor did a week ago, he failed to answer a critical question about that day: Who was supposed to be watching that roof? In one of his first actions as acting director, Mr. Rowe said he went to the site of the shooting in Butler, Pa., and specifically to the warehouse roof that the gunman used, which had been unmanned and apparently unwatched. Mr. Rowe said he climbed onto the building and lay on the roof so he could see the direct line that the shooter, later identified as Thomas Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., had to Mr. Trump.

New York CNN —A US safety regulator announced Tuesday that it voted unanimously to hold Amazon responsible for faulty or unsafe products sold by third-parties on its website and app. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, tasked with ordering companies to recall dangerous products sold in America, said it found more than 400,000 defective products sold on Amazon’s platform that the online retailer now must recall or face legal consequences. The ruling today underlines the CPSC’s crackdown on products it views as unsafe. The agency first sued the mega-retailer in 2021, when it said it was cracking down on Amazon because it has limited ability to force a recall of foreign products. Amazon claims in a statement when it was notified about the potential safety issues, it “swiftly notified customers, instructed them to stop using the products, and refunded them.”CNN’s Chris Isidore contributed to this report.
