One kilogram gold bars are displayed for a photograph at the YLG Bullion International headquarters in Thailand on January 13, 2016. Gold prices soared to an all-time high on Friday as the dollar weakened amid prospects of a U.S. interest rate cut next week, while palladium has gained 15% so far this week. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $2,565 per ounce, as of 0258 GMT, after hitting a record high of $2,567.93 earlier in the session. The dollar fell to a one-week low, making gold less expensive for other currency holders. Palladium climbed 0.16% to $1,048.06 and was headed for the best week since Dec. 11, 2023, fueled by export curb concerns.

Analysts are not overly optimistic about the extent to which the trade-in program could support retail sales. China's retail sales for August are due Saturday morning. Retail sales in June rose by 2%, the slowest since the Covid-19 pandemic, while July sales growth saw a modest improvement at 2.7%.

Biden finalizes increases to China tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Katie Lobosco | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Washington CNN —The Biden administration said Friday that it has finalized tariff hikes on certain Chinese-made products that the president first announced in May. The administration’s increases come as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have clashed over tariffs on the campaign trail. Trump implemented sweeping tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese-made products when he was in office. “Today’s finalized tariff increases will target the harmful policies and practices of the People’s Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release. China is expected to retaliate by increasing tariffs on US-made goods.

The Technology Select Sector Index, which the ETF 'XLK ' tracks, is down about 9% since the all-time high on July 10. This is even though the technology sector earnings have experienced a compound annual growth rate 2.7% greater than the S & P 500. The chart below reflects the earnings growth of the Technology Sector vs. the S & P 500 over the past 20 years in a log scale. Not only has the technology sector grown earnings faster, but earnings growth has also been more stable. While technology stocks are down almost 9% from their all-time highs, those all-time highs also reflected all-time high valuations.

We started buying Home Depot shares last week as a play on housing and interest rates. Our Home Depot investment thesis is all about a pickup in housing turnover, the main driver of the home improvement retailer's sales. When rates went below 6.5% toward the end of last year, he explained, there was an immediate increase in housing activity, mortgage applications, and mortgage refinance applications. Mortgage rates with a 5% handle could be on the horizon, at least that's what Toll Brothers CEO Doug Yearley thinks. With these numbers, it's easy to see why Decker is optimistic that activity will normalize, and housing turnover and remodel activity will pick-up again.

U.S. crude oil jumped more than 1% to trade above $68 per barrel on Thursday, after Hurricane Francine churned through the Gulf of Mexico, disrupting oil production before making landfall in Louisiana. Oil futures rose more than 2% in the previous session as the storm threatened supplies. "Hurricane Francine has likely disrupted about 1.5mn barrels of US oil production, which we estimate will reduce September production in the Gulf of Mexico by around 50,000bpd," Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS, told clients in a Thursday note. Staunovo said the recent slump may be due to traders losing confidence in OPEC's ability to maintain compliance with production cuts at lower price levels. UBS expects oil prices will continue to rise, at least the short term.

New York CNN —It’s easy to dismiss many presidential candidates’ campaign promises as empty, because Congress would need to approve them. Alex Durante, an economist at the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank, told CNN that 100% tariffs would threaten the economy. It’s possible he is floating 100% tariffs as just a threat designed to change the behavior of other countries. ‘No question it’s inflationary’The Trump campaign did not provide an explanation to CNN about how Trump would implement 100% tariffs nor what the trigger would be. He said Trump’s tariff plan, if enacted, would risk setting off a market panic like former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss did in 2022.

She knows his personal number and has utilized it, one source familiar with the relationship told CNN. When Trump landed in Philadelphia on Tuesday before his debate against Harris, Loomer was among the close allies seen deboarding his private plane. Wholesale prices rose in August about in line with expectations, the final inflation data point as the Federal Reserve gets set to lower interest rates. The core increase was the same when excluding trade services. On a 12-month basis, headline PPI rose 1.7%. On the PPI measure, services prices pushed much of the gain, with a 0.4% monthly increase driven by a rise in services less trade, transportation and warehousing. The release comes a day after the BLS reported that consumer prices rose 0.2% on the month in line with expectations.

Here's a rapid-fire update on all 32 stocks in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use for the CNBC Investing Club. AMD shares have caught a bid in recent days, but they're still cheap considering the growth of its AI processors. Broadcom : Investors who don't own any Broadcom yet should consider starting a position here, Jim said. Although it's tempting to offload shares, Jim said to stick with Honeywell for now because there's huge value in individual businesses like aerospace. There's little negative to say about this portfolio stock.

The AI boom is still in its infancy, following the path of the internet in the 1990s, BofA said. AI's impact will be felt sooner than past tech booms, the bank says. Skepticism about AI has mounted recently as investors get impatient to see AI returns. "Skeptics declare that GenAI's revenue potential doesn't justify the current level of AI infrastructure investment," the report says. On Tuesday, Morgan Stanley chief US equity strategist Mike Wilson said the AI investment theme has been "overcooked," and suggested investors should retreat into defensive stocks.

Shares of Trump Media continued to sink on Thursday, closing at a fresh low, following Tuesday's presidential debate between its majority shareholder, former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. Shares of the Truth Social owner, which trade under the ticker "DJT," are down nearly 14% since the debate Tuesday night in Philadelphia, hosted by ABC News. But the slide in Trump Media shares — which often rise and fall in line with Trump's political fortunes — suggests that investors may not be convinced that Trump won the debate. In a Thursday afternoon post on Truth Social, the Republican nominee announced he would not be doing another debate.
