June 26 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks closed lower on Monday, as investors were wary of making riskier bets after Russia's aborted weekend mutiny. Investors were uncertain about the implications of the rebellion by Russian mercenaries that raised questions about President Vladimir Putin's future. Growth stocks weighed the most on the main indexes, with Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) falling sharply. With this uncertainty in mind Schleif noted that investors were taking some profits in growth stocks that had advanced sharply this year. But Carnival (CCL.N) slumped after the cruise operator forecast third-quarter earnings below Wall Street expectations.

CNN —National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman said he has advised NHL teams to no longer wear specialty-themed jerseys during warm-ups, including Pride-theme jerseys. The decision follows Major League Baseball’s announcement last week that teams would not put Pride logos on players’ uniforms and after a handful of NHL players refused to wear Pride sweaters or participate in their teams’ Pride Nights due to their personal beliefs. Some hockey teams opted to forgo their planned Pride Night warmup jerseys altogether. “Thirty-two of our clubs did Pride nights, some do Heritage nights, everybody does Hockey Fights Cancer, some do military nights. With student loan payments set to resume this fall, borrowers are likely going to have to cut back spending — and that's bad news for some retailers. About 40 million Americans have a total of nearly $1.8 trillion in outstanding student loan debt. "We regard the incremental 'essential' nature of the debt payments as likely to reduce discretionary spending by an approximately equal amount." UBS expects the pullback in apparel spending to continue as Americans shift funds to student loan payments. In fact, its analysis of U.S. consumers with student loans shows the trend is even more pronounced among those with student debt.

Private equity risks gorging on its secret sauce
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Investors prefer pedestrian but steady management fees over the lumpy share of fund profit that is the industry’s special sauce. Private equity firms with a public listing funnel some of the carry to employees and some to shareholders. TPG (TPG.O) last year went public with a similar strategy of paying around two-thirds of performance-related revenue to employees. Assuming the general idea is to keep overall earnings steady, then higher fee-based income for shareholders must be matched by lower cash compensation for employees. It suggests that for KKR, TPG and the rest, there is a limit to just how much of their own secret sauce employees can eat.

Every month, he picks up medication at his local Walmart pharmacy that makes HIV undetectable and untransmittable — a prospect that was unthinkable just a generation ago. Yet racial and ethnic disparities remain pronounced, with people of color accounting for a disproportionate share of new HIV diagnoses. Walmart launched an HIV specialty-pharmacy pilot program in late 2021, targeting just over half a dozen highly affected communities, including Rosario's county in New Jersey. "We can see from the data that that there's a need here — there's a higher incidence of HIV," said Kevin Host, Walmart pharmacy senior vice president. Now, the retail giant plans to expand its program to more than 80 HIV-specialty facilities across nearly a dozen states by the end of this year.

Starbucks plans to open more stores in smaller towns, said an industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Soon after Starbucks' May launch of $3.33 milkshakes, designed to attract children, Third Wave launched its own range, a fifth cheaper at $2.71. He saw Starbucks' cheaper, small-sized drinks as a response to competition in "an incredibly price-sensitive market". Consumers will tighten their purse strings as federal student loan payments resume, and a slew of retail stocks could take a hit, UBS found. That lagging performance is expected to continue, especially since the debt ceiling legislation includes a provision that will end a pause on federal student loan payments by September, according to UBS analyst Jay Sole in a Sunday report. "Our new analysis of U.S. consumers with student loans suggests they are likely to disproportionately reduce spending on softgoods vs. other categories as they shift funds to paying down student debt," said Sole. For instance, nearly 37% of student loan consumers bought Nike products, compared with about 29% of all U.S. adults. About 62% of the consumers polled agreed with the statement, "My philosophy of spending is 'Live for today because tomorrow is so uncertain,'" the bank found.

The survey results reveal a bunch of fascinating findings, especially when student loan consumers are compared against the average US adult over 18. The average income for student loan consumers was $65,400, slightly less than the $66,200 for the average US consumer. Student loan consumers are more likely to have purchased something from Nike over the past six months than any other brand. UBS argues the end of the student loan payment moratorium will hit a bunch of brands and retailers like American Eagle Outfitters, Nike, and Gap. As my colleague Ayelet Sheffey has reported, the Biden administration remains confident that the Supreme Court will rule in its favor over the legality of its student debt forgiveness.
