Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist of JPMorgan Securities, listens during a Bloomberg Television interview in New York on March 6, 2018. The Federal Reserve should cut interest rates by 50 basis points at its September meeting, according to JPMorgan's Michael Feroli. "We think there's a good case for hurrying up in their pace of rate cuts." "While inflation is still a little above target, unemployment is probably getting a little above what they think is consistent with full employment. This follows the unemployment rate inching higher to 4.3% in July, triggering a recession indicator known as the Sahm Rule.

Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic signaled Wednesday that he is ready to start lowering interest rates even though inflation is still running above the central bank's target. The Fed's preferred measure showed inflation running at a 2.5% rate in July, and just a slightly higher 2.6% core rate when excluding food and energy. His comments also come two days before what is expected to be a pivotal nonfarm payrolls report as most economists see the labor market losing momentum. However, the data and our grassroots feedback describe an economy and labor market losing momentum," he said. Indeed, he cited multiple factors indicating that inflation is progressing convincingly back to the Fed's target as the labor market moderates.

The company slipped into the FTSE 250 during September's quarterly rebalancing, index provider FTSE Russell said in a statement, bringing its 15-year run in the U.K. large-cap FTSE 100 blue-chip index to a close. The company's current market cap of £2.34 billion ($3.06 billion) now puts it well below the other constituents of the FTSE 100, as well as some of the top performers in the FTSE 250. As such, funds that invest in the FTSE 100 will exit their Burberry holdings. The luxury label's addition to the FTSE 100 in September 2009 was taken as a further mark of its enduring appeal and its resilience, even amid the global financial crisis. The luxury sector as a whole has suffered from a prolonged downturn in consumer spending amid inflationary pressures and broader economic uncertainty.

Job openings slumped to their lowest level in 3½ years in July, the Labor Department reported Wednesday in another sign of slack in the labor market. "The labor market is no longer cooling down to its pre-pandemic temperature, it's dropped past it," said Nick Bunker, head of economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab. "Nobody, and certainly not policymakers at the Federal Reserve, should want the labor market to get any cooler at this point." While the job openings level declined, layoffs increased to 1.76 million, up 202,000 from June. "The still low level of layoffs and tick up in hires suggests the labor market is not cracking.

Trump Media ended the trading day at $16.98 per share, a 6% decline on the day. Trump Media shares on Wednesday closed below where they stood at the end of 2023, as the Truth Social maker's stock continued to slide ahead of the date when majority owner Donald Trump can begin selling his stake . The stock price has ricocheted since then, as traders and analysts increasingly viewed Trump Media as a meme stock and as its value rose and fell with the political fortunes of the Republican presidential nominee. A Trump Media spokesperson told CNBC in a statement, "Trump Media is rapidly building out our platform while maintaining a strong balance sheet." That upcoming deadline has stoked speculation about whether Trump will try to cash out his shares or hold on to his stake.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, left, meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi at the Plaza Hotel in New York, Sept. 19, 2016. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked former President Donald Trump to show proof that he never received any money from Egypt, following a recent report on a nearly $10 million withdrawal from the nation's state-run bank days before Trump became president in 2017. The Democrats in a letter to Trump on Tuesday said they were looking into allegations that Trump took a "cash bribe" from Egypt's president, and that former Attorney General Bill Barr and others blocked a Department of Justice probe into that alleged bribe. Asked about the letter, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told CNBC in an email, "This is textbook Fake News." The discovery of that withdrawal appeared to bolster the claim that el-Sissi sought to give Trump money.

Under the proposal, new small businesses could spread the deduction out over several years, or delay claiming the $50,000 tax deduction until the company turned a profit. The Internal Revenue Service has previously run into issues ensuring that its small business tax breaks end up in the right pockets, especially during the pandemic, when the agency flagged a spike in fraudulent claims. The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for clarification about which startups and small businesses would be eligible for the tax deduction. On Wednesday, Harris will also set a goal of collecting 25 million new small business applications in her first term if she is elected president. By focusing on small businesses, Harris' tax deduction proposal could help her thread the needle between rebutting Trump's attacks, and keeping up her political crusade against corporate greed.

Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who has endorsed Republican former President Donald Trump's campaign, is advising the GOP nominee to focus on Vice President Kamala Harris' policy pivots in their upcoming debate. Still, Gabbard is uniquely suited to help Trump understand what it would be like to debate Harris, given her firsthand experience during the 2020 Democratic primary contest. "What I pointed out in that debate stage in the 2020 campaign was her hypocrisy," Gabbard said. At the time, criminal justice reform was a very popular issue among Democratic primary voters. The Trump campaign recently added both Gabbard and RFK Jr. to its official transition team, and both are in reported talks for potential cabinet positions if Trump wins the White House.

While the Fed uses a whole dashboard of indicators to measure inflation, the PCE index is its go-to data point and its sole forecasting tool when members release their quarterly projections. Policymakers especially hone in on the core PCE measure, which excludes food and energy, when making interest rate decisions. "To me, it's going to be just one more piece of evidence to confirm that the Fed is seeing sustainable inflation readings at a sustainable pace," said Beth Ann Bovino, chief economist at U.S. Bank. Any slight upticks are "really just base-effect kinds of things that aren't going to change the Fed's view." Fed officials aren't declaring victory over inflation yet, though recent statements indicate a more positive outlook.

Trump Media ended Wednesday's trading session down more than 4% at $20.10 per share. The monthslong Trump Media stock slide continued Wednesday, as shares of the company majority-owned by former President Donald Trump fell below $20 for the first time since the Truth Social maker went public more than five months ago. A Trump Media spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on the stock's latest dive. If he does sell — or if he even appears likely to — investors could lose confidence in Trump Media, a situation the company's own regulatory filings have acknowledged. But the company has noted that its fledgling social media platform, Truth Social, depends at least partly on Trump's enduring popularity and reputation.

That's because the National Flood Insurance Program — the government-sponsored public insurance program that is the largest flood insurer in the U.S. — needs to be reauthorized by Sept. 30 to continue to issue new policies or increase coverage on existing policies. "There are very few private insurers that offer any type of flood insurance," said Daniel Schwarcz, a professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School who focuses on insurance law and regulation. In that report, from 2011, it estimated a one-month NFIP lapse could affect about 40,000 closings. "There is no need to take the risk that the flood insurance program will lapse when you could close ahead of Sept. Then in 2021, FEMA implemented Risk Rating 2.0, a new pricing system that would accurately reflect the cost of an area's risk.

NASA will call on SpaceX to bring home two astronauts who have been stuck on the International Space Station since early June after their Boeing spacecraft ran into several problems midflight, the agency said Saturday. While the agency has finally settled on how to bring the astronauts back, their return trip will not be immediate. Instead, Wilmore and Williams will remain at the space station for about six more months before flying home in February. NASA said it will free up two seats on an upcoming SpaceX launch, known as Crew-9, that will be taking a new rotation of space station crew members to the orbiting outpost. The beleaguered Starliner capsule, meanwhile, will journey back to Earth without a crew, likely sometime in early September, according to NASA.

The test flight was originally intended to last about nine days. The decision to bring Starliner back from the ISS empty marks a dramatic about-face for NASA and Boeing, as the organizations were previously adamant that the capsule was the primary choice for returning the crew. But Starliner's crew flight test, which had been seen as the final major milestone in the spacecraft's development, faced problems — most notably with its propulsion system. "Boeing has worked very hard with NASA to get the necessary data to make this decision," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during a press conference with top NASA officials at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday. NASA will now conduct another phase of its Flight Readiness Review to determine when to bring the empty Starliner home.

WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. Federal law related to presidential transitions stipulates Sept. 1 as the deadline for GSA to enter into formal agreements with presidential transition teams. Several former Trump administration staffers are part of the groups behind Project 2025, but McMahon and Lutnick haven’t been connected to the effort.

The Summary Despite high ocean temperatures, hurricane season has hit a lull. The Gulf of Mexico is blazing hot, but hurricane season — temporarily, at least — has hit a lull, a surprise to researchers who see plenty of ingredients brewing in the Atlantic but no storms on the radar. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Hurricane scientists predicted a record hurricane season this year, and it got off to a record-setting start when Hurricane Beryl became the first Category 4 storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean in June. The unofficial peak of hurricane season is Sept. 10.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has clawed back billions of dollars that countless veterans were given as incentives to leave the military, including when it needed to downsize, according to new data obtained by NBC News. Disabled veterans have been told in the last 12 fiscal years to return nearly $3 billion in special separation pay — lump-sum incentives that were offered when the U.S. had to reduce its active-duty force or release slightly injured service members, the data shows. The justification of the recoupment rule carried over in the 1990s when other forms of special separation payments — unrelated to disabilities — were authorized. Those payments, including the Special Separation Benefit (SSB), were designed instead to help the Defense Department manage its force size. He was told to pay back the money in 2017 after he filed for VA disability for PTSD and other conditions.

Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell said Friday he expects the central bank will cut its key interest rate in the near future in response to slower economic growth and cooling inflation. "The labor market is no longer overheated, and conditions are now less tight than those that prevailed before the pandemic. Starting in the spring of 2022, the Fed raised interest rates to a level not seen in nearly two decades as it worked to combat soaring inflation. "Make no mistake, if the labor market shows signs of further cooling, the Fed will cut with conviction," Shah wrote. Lower interest rates will provide some relief to consumer borrowers, but it will not be immediate, according to Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.
