Here’s what to know about the Mar-a-Lago documents case
  + stars: | 2024-03-11 | by ( Devan Cole | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
The classified documents case is one of four criminal cases Trump is facing, although it’s unclear when it will go to trial. The case centers around Trump’s handling of classified documents after his presidency and his resistance to the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials he took to Mar-a-Lago from the White House. Part of Trump’s strategy in his federal criminal cases has included attempting to delay trials until after the election. Meanwhile, Trump is attempting to get the entire documents case tossed out. That case is currently on hold as the Supreme Court weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in the matter.

A new American intelligence assessment released on Monday raised doubts about whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel could stay in power, as the C.I.A. director said a hostage deal was the most practical way to halt, at least temporarily, the war in Gaza. The 2024 Annual Threat Assessment expressed concerns about Israel’s vision for the end of the war and said that Mr. Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition “may be in jeopardy.”“Distrust of Netanyahu’s ability to rule has deepened and broadened across the public from its already high levels before the war, and we expect large protests demanding his resignation and new elections,” the report said. “A different, more moderate government is a possibility.”The report predicted that Israel would struggle to achieve its goal of “destroying Hamas.”“Israel probably will face lingering armed resistance from Hamas for years to come, and the military will struggle to neutralize Hamas’s underground infrastructure, which allows insurgents to hide, regain strength and surprise Israeli forces,” the report said.

CNN —The US intelligence community assesses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “viability as a leader” to be “in jeopardy,” according to its annual report on the national security threats facing the United States that was presented to Congress on Monday. The intelligence report notes that the Israeli population broadly supports the destruction of Hamas. It offers an around-the-world unclassified snapshot of how the intelligence community views the panoply of national security threats facing the United States. Beijing, according to the report, has more than tripled its export of goods with potential military use to Russia since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. China has provided “economy and security assistance to Russia’s war in Ukraine through support to Russia’s defense industrial base, including by providing dual-use material and components for weapons,” the report states.

This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

In an interview recorded last month with Swiss broadcaster RSI and partially released on Saturday, Francis used the phrase "the courage of the white flag" as he argued that Ukraine, facing a possible defeat, should be open to peace talks brokered by international powers. "How about, for balance, encouraging Putin to have the courage to withdraw his army from Ukraine? Peace would immediately ensue without the need for negotiations," Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski responded with a post on X, formerly Twitter. His post on X appeared to compare the pope's comments to calls for "talking with Hitler" while raising "a white flag to satisfy him." Matteo Bruni said that the journalist interviewing Francis used the term "white flag" in the question that prompted the controversial remarks.

OpenAI is reinstating CEO Sam Altman to its board of directors and said it has “full confidence” in his leadership after the conclusion of an outside investigation into the company's turmoil. After months of investigation, it found that Altman's ouster was a “consequence of a breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust” between him and the prior board, OpenAI said in a summary of the findings Friday. The investigation found the prior board acted within its discretion. “The review concluded there was a significant breakdown in trust between the prior board, and Sam and Greg,” Bret Taylor, the board’s chair, told reporters Friday. After it retained the law firm in December, OpenAI said WilmerHale conducted dozens of interviews with the company’s prior board, current executives, advisers and other witnesses.

Hong Kong CNN —Chinese leaders have pledged to achieve an ambitious growth rate this year, while reshaping its economic model to focus on technology innovation. On Tuesday, Premier Li Qiang announced that economic growth target of around 5% for 2024, which he said “will not be easy” to hit, given that a Covid-battered 2022 had provided a lower base of growth for last year. “The level of support is likely too little to rocket the economy to its 5% growth target this year,” said Sarah Tan, an economist at Moody’s, referring to the measures announced by Li Tuesday. “China is walking a tightrope on the fiscal front between infrastructure stimulus and LGFV [local government financing vehicle] deleveraging,” said Goldman Sachs analysts on Wednesday. In order to achieve the ambitious 5% growth target, more specific stimulus is needed, such as increasing manufacturing investments, Liu said.

The performance of the once-dominant Magnificent 7 stocks has certainly shifted in the first quarter, with charts like Apple (AAPL) beginning to diverge from the rest of the mega-cap growth leadership names. But is the recent decline for AAPL just the beginning? Since a strong rally in the first half of 2023, Apple has essentially been in a basing pattern. The RSI has moved into the oversold range as well, which tells me to expect at least some sort of bounce off this well-established level of price support. CNN —A new version of Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto’s “Venus of the Rags” has been unveiled in Naples after the original was destroyed in a suspected arson attack. The artwork—a statue of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, sex, beauty and fertility, and a heap of rags—stands in the Italian city’s Piazza Municipio once again following a ceremony Wednesday. The new version is “apparently identical” to the one that was burned, councillor Vincenzo Trione said in the statement. The work will be displayed in Piazza Municipio for three months before being moved to a permanent spot. Pistoletto first made the “Venus of the Rags” in 1967.

In the spring of 1943, Josette Molland, a 20-year-old art student, was certain of two things: that she was making a pretty good living creating designs for Lyon’s silk weavers, and that it was unbearable that Germans occupied her country. She joined the Resistance. Fabricating false papers and transporting them for the famed Dutch-Paris underground network unburdened her of guilt. Captured by the Gestapo less than a year later, Ms. Molland lived the hell of Nazi deportation and Nazi camps for women, at Ravensbrück and elsewhere. “I had a happy life for the next 50 years,” Ms. Molland said in a privately published autobiography, “Soif de Vivre” (“Thirst for Life”), in 2016.

This prompted us to investigate the group further, which revealed that various stocks are sporting constructive technical formations. Restaurant stocks charts showing strength McDonalds (MCD) has had a wild ride over the last 10 months and now sits at the same price level that it was trading at last April — eleven months ago. MCD isn't the only restaurant stock that's sporting an attractive technical pattern. On the weekly chart, Restaurant Brands International (QSR) looks very similar to MCD, having formed its own inverse-head-and-shoulders formation over the last year. While this is no indication of what could happen now to MCD, YUM and QSR, it shows how breaking through multi-year resistance can attract momentum.

Josette Molland’s Testimony: Scenes of Life in Nazi Camps
  + stars: | 2024-03-06 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Josette Molland, who died at 100 in France on Feb. 17, was a young member of the French Resistance during World War II when she was captured by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Nazi forced-labor camps for women. Later, after her return to France, she would speak to students about her experiences. In her 80s, however, worrying that her story wasn’t getting through to them, she concluded that telling them of her camp life was not enough. So she set about painting, from painful memory, scenes of the harsh incarceration that she and many other female inmates suffered. Here are five of them, with the text she wrote to accompany them.

Higher rates and a higher dollar put downward pressure on U.S. tech stocks and bitcoin due to their positive correlation demonstrated above. As a result, tech stocks and Bitcoin are rallying.

His performance so far reflects his success at transforming the Republican Party in his image. The most important message from the primaries is the most straightforward: Trump’s coalition is the dominant faction in the GOP. Like McConnell’s announcement, the choices by GOP elected officials in the primary contest signal their acknowledgement of the party’s direction. The share of GOP elected officials who have endorsed Haley isn’t anywhere near as large as her share of the total vote. Opinion | The New Rape Denialism

On Oct. 7, Hamas invaded Israel and filmed itself committing scores of human-rights atrocities. Some of the footage was later captured by the Israeli military and screened to hundreds of journalists, including me. The “pure, predatory sadism,” as Atlantic writer Graeme Wood described it, is bottomless. I’ll get to that in a moment, but first it’s worth looking at the forms this denialism takes. A third is to treat anything an Israeli says as inherently suspect.
