Stocks will continue their rally until April - and then start feeling the pain of weak corporate earnings, Joe Terranova said. The veteran market strategist warned of the lagged effect of Fed rate hikes. "I think the market has a runway though leading up to the next earnings report." "I don't view the Federal Reserve right now as the adversary of the market," Terranova said, though he warned investors weren't completely in the clear. "The first half of the year is going to be better than the second half of the year," Terranova warned.
Feb 8(Reuters) - Michael Kors owner Capri Holdings Ltd (CPRI.N) on Wednesday cut its annual profit forecast and provided a dour outlook for 2024, blaming a slowdown in demand from department stores for its luxury handbags and apparel and sending its shares tumbling 24%. Capri said third-quarter sales fell 6%, driven by a 20% fall in revenue from its wholesale channel, which includes department stores and other retailers. Revenue for Michael Kors, Capri's biggest brand, fell 4.5% to $777 million in the Americas during the third quarter. Capri, which also owns Jimmy Choo and Versace, cut its annual sales forecast to $5.56 billion, from $5.70 billion. Analysts expect earnings per share of $7.24 on revenue of $6.03 billion.
The US salty snack market is continuing to grow even as consumers feel the pinch. According to Mintel's survey, more than a quarter of people have increased their consumption of salty snacks in the past year, with 47% of millennials eating more chips, popcorn, and pretzels. "As consumers continue to navigate stressful and evolving times, salty snacks can be there to help them slow down and even relieve stress," Mintel analyst Kelsey Olsen in a statement. "Salty snacks are winning in their ability to satisfy cravings and meet emotional needs, expanding their role beyond a quick hunger-satisfying solution." "Snacking continues to be a way for consumers to connect or to enjoy a moment of delight in their day," he added.

NEW YORK, Jan 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - McDonald’s (MCD.N) is having a good time at the bottom of the price food chain. The Chicago-based burger purveyor on Tuesday said that same-store sales rose 12% year-over-year in the last three months of 2022. That has helped restaurants grow, but McDonald’s is particularly benefitting. That’s despite McDonald’s touting the benefit of “strategic menu price increases” this quarter; the company previously said its U.S. prices should be up over 10% for the full year. How long this can continue probably depends on other options staying pricier – but for now, the nugget-maker has found its happy place.

"I have to say that this has been one of the most challenging tournaments I have played in my life, considering the circumstances," Djokovic said in his on-court interview. This, probably, is the biggest victory in my life considering the circumstances." This is definitely not your last Grand Slam, you still have a lot of time, much more than me," Djokovic said. Tsitsipas, who fell short of becoming the first Greek tennis player to win a Grand Slam, commended Djokovic's contribution to the sport.

Shares in H&M, the world's No. 2 fashion retailer, fell as much as 6% in early trade after quarterly operating profit sank to 821 million Swedish crowns ($79.7 million) from 6.26 billion a year earlier. Zara has outperformed rivals after selling higher-priced garments and enticing shoppers who might have otherwise spent money at luxury stores. Disappointment over the impact of the China disruptions on its margins caused a record-breaking run in LVMH shares to briefly halt on Friday. The luxury industry is nevertheless expected to be one of the biggest winners from the loosening of restrictions that kept shoppers out of stores in China for months.
Layoffs and extended periods of unemployment are a few of the many reasons you might have to use your emergency fund. Use these tips to beef up your emergency fund, whether you're just getting started or looking to add extra cushioning. Ideally, you'll be able to routinely put money toward both your emergency fund and retirement savings, but if you have to pick one, prioritize emergency savings first. Your emergency savings, on the other hand, should be readily available, such as in a high-yield savings account. Plus, when you're young, you have time to catch up on your retirement savings.
The first scenario is consistent with a recession starting in early 2023, the second with a recession deferred until late 2023 or early 2024 when inflation and interest rate rises induce a slowdown. CYCLICAL EXTREMESDuring a typical economic cycle, output growth alternates between expansions well above the long-term trend rate and contractions well below trend; growth is close to trend only for relatively short periods. Distillate inventories are unlikely to be replenished without a recession or at least a significant mid-cycle slowdown to curb consumption. UNPALATABLE CHOICESIn the first scenario, the global economy tips into recession, cutting distillate consumption, boosting inventories and lowering prices. From this starting position, an early recession, or persistent inflation followed by a recession, are much more likely outcomes than a soft landing in 2023.
Jan 24 (Reuters) - Texas Instruments (TXN.O) forecast first-quarter revenue and profit largely below Wall Street targets on Tuesday, as an economic downturn threatens to shackle demand from the chipmaker's so far resilient markets. Order cancellations rose during the fourth quarter, head of investor relations Dave Pahl told analysts in an earnings call. Total revenue fell 3% to $4.67 billion in the quarter, compared with estimates of $4.62 billion. Texas Instruments expects revenue of $4.17 billion to $4.53 billion in the first quarter, the mid-point of which is lower than estimates of $4.41 billion, according to Refinitiv data. It expects current-quarter earnings per share between $1.64 and $1.90, the mid-point of which also fell short of expectations of $1.87.
That surge in demand and limited supply contributed to higher prices. But diners will likely still pay higher menu prices than they were last year. Dutch Bros. Coffee CEO Joth Ricci told CNBC that most coffee businesses hedge their prices six to 12 months in advance. However, Zandi said, if the job market remains strong, inflation eases and wages grow, Americans can better manage higher prices for airfare and other items. Several hot pandemic items, including TVs, computers, sporting goods and major appliances have dropped in price, according to Labor Department data from December.
Azarenka up for the challenge as Sabalenka seeks calm

Although Sabalenka and Magda Linette of Poland will be playing in their first semi-finals at Melbourne Park, Azarenka returns to final-four action after a decade away when she takes on Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Now a self-confessed "obnoxious" soccer mom, the 33-year-old Azarenka looked every inch the player who won back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013 when she took apart in-form third seed Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. "It will be a great matchup," said Belarusian Azarenka, who lost their only meeting in straight sets at Indian Wells last year. Sabalenka, who has played three previous Grand Slam semi-finals and lost them all, knows that her biggest battle on Thursday will most likely be with her own emotions. "I think it's going to be a great test for me, if I can actually keep myself calm in key moments," Sabalenka said.
Jan 24 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Texas Instruments (TI) (TXN.O) forecast first-quarter revenue and profit below Wall Street targets on Tuesday as a wider economic downturn threatens to shake demand even in end-markets that were resilient last year. The automotive market was the only exception to weak demand, TI Chief Executive Rich Templeton, who will step down in April, said on Tuesday. TI's revenue fell 3% to $4.67 billion, but beat analysts' average estimate of $4.62 billion, according to Refinitiv data. The company expects revenue of $4.17 billion to $4.53 billion in the first quarter, the mid-point of which is lower than estimates of $4.41 billion. It expects current-quarter earnings per share between $1.64 and $1.90, the mid-point of which also fell short of expectations.
Consumers have been feeling the pinch from higher food prices as inflation soars. The chairman of Tesco, one of Britain's largest supermarket chains, said Sunday it was "entirely possible" that some food firms are profiteering from inflation at the cost of some of the poorest consumers. Tesco has created a team to monitor food input costs against price rises and is challenging companies it believes are lifting prices disproportionately, Allen said. Tesco told CNBC that it was unable to provide further comment. Food suppliers have hit back at the claims.

Investors have been getting back into tech stocks, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq leading all three major Wall Street indexes since the start of the year, rising over 6%. But fund manager Trent Masters of Alphinity Investment Management isn't convinced — and told CNBC Pro Talks last week which two Big Tech stocks might be worth avoiding for now. He doesn't own any Big Tech names at the moment, except for a "residual position" in Apple. Meta Masters told CNBC Pro there are "genuine questions" over a few companies' business models — and Meta is the "most exposed" of the lot. Apple Masters said the latest iPhone release was "fairly tepid" as "there wasn't really much in terms of product iteration."

Companies are expected to tap the brakes on capital investments this year as they assess the risk of a downturn and contend with higher financing costs. Capital spending in 2021 rose by 9% compared with 2020, the first year of the pandemic, EY said. FedEx Corp. last month lowered its capital spending forecast for the current fiscal year by $400 million, to $5.9 billion. The remainder said they don’t finance their capital spending plans through borrowing, or their borrowing isn’t sensitive to changes in interest rates.
