The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world's top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet. But the long and winding road to Davos offers another lesser-known benefit, which makes the lengthier commute well worth the while. Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. One Davos attendee noted their company was in the IP space and had just raised this summer, because "the rights issue is so complicated."

Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. As clear-cut as his win was, though, Iowa has not historically played the role of kingmaker in the Republican nominating process. He chose to appear at court hearings as a defendant in his legal cases in New York and Washington rather than speak to Iowa voters in the final days before the voting. With its more moderate, educated electorate, New Hampshire presents Trump’s rivals with possibly their best opportunity to slow his march. Trump's strength among Republican voters is beyond dispute, but the road is long and could be bumpy.

As much as January is a time for self-improvement, it can also be tough to stay motivated as the dead of winter sets in. Hygge can be practiced year-round to provide a serotonin boost through socializing, feeling sheltered and secure, enjoying indulgent foods and prioritizing rest. But it's something of a "survival strategy" in winter, says Wiking, who wrote the New York Times bestseller "The Little Book of Hygge." To that end, here are his three tips for harnessing hygge to stay happy and motivated despite the dreary winter season. Since then, he's made it a practice to get outside for an hour of daylight, even in winter.

Beyond Trump’s strong overall lead, the survey showed the former president attracting 51% support from Iowa evangelicals, far more than he drew in 2016. But Trump won the state by capturing 44% of evangelicals without a degree, double his share among the South Carolina evangelicals with a degree. This year, DeSantis will likely need to shake Trump’s hold on evangelical voters if he is to finish well enough in Iowa to remain a viable candidate after Monday. Asked if DeSantis can win evangelicals in Iowa on Monday, Vander Plaats pointedly responded: “I think he’ll do very well.”Compared to DeSantis, Haley isn’t betting on evangelical voters nearly as heavily in Iowa. Even in the most optimistic scenario for DeSantis or Haley, Trump’s hold on evangelicals without a college degree looks like a rock in the road for them.

MILAN (AP) — Hot off Taylor Swift’s Golden Globe red-carpet triumph for Gucci in glittering green, the Italian brand’s creative director plunged into his menswear debut on the first day of Milan Fashion Week on Friday with somewhat shimmery, slightly subversive classics. The logo was sparing: Gucci was emblazoned in subtle raised letters on leather bags, the double-G logo appeared as repeating patterns on slim suits and the Gucci stripe inside coat slits. Bondage touches came in trailing silk ties fastened around the neck with silver hardware and half gloves in leather. The power of pairing was best displayed in a shirtless look with straight trousers, the double-G belt drifting to the hip. With a versatile sporty-to-tailored-to-dance floor silhouette, the collection was blinged up with kaleidoscopic crystal-covered tanks or trousers, or shimmery shaggy lurex coats that mix light and motion.

CNN —A formerly unknown relative of the most iconic of all dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex, has been newly identified, according to a study released Thursday. Called Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis, the creature likely roamed Earth up to 7 million years before T. rex emerged. But Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis’ bones were discovered decades before the creature officially got its scientific name. “The lower jaw in a Tyrannosaurus rex is actually quite robust. “That set the table for when Sebastian started to look at our specimen and say, ‘Hey, these don’t actually look the same as the famous Tyrannosaurus rex specimens from places like Montana.’”

A woman took to TikTok with details of a childhood movie she couldn't fully remember. After years of searching, Miller and her dad had started to think the movie wasn't real"I was roughly about 5 when I first watched this movie," Miller told Business Insider in an email exchange. I was giggling the whole time as it's, for lack of better words, pretty silly," Miller told BI. Miller told BI her highlight of the whole experience was the community that had formed around it. "It's honestly brought me to tears multiple times seeing grown men and women thanking eachother for finding bits of their childhood they thought were lost forever," Miller told BI.

Economists were expecting the annual overall inflation rate to tick higher, to 3.2% from the 3.1% headline reading the month before, according to FactSet consensus estimates. Despite the acceleration, the annual rate of consumer-level inflation is down considerably from December 2022’s rate of 6.5%; additionally, a closely watched measure of underlying inflation slowed further. In December, core goods prices were flat, an apparent stalling out after six months of declines. Rising shelter costs have kept core services elevated. The central bank has a target inflation rate of 2%, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which has its latest reading due out later this month.

After spending the past two years trying to get inflation under control by raising interest rates, the Fed is inching toward cutting rates soon. Setting interest rates should be about weighing costs and benefits for everyone, not engineering outcomes for a favored constituency. When people (usually those with a vested political interest) try to accuse the Fed of being biased, it erodes confidence. The real reason for the accusationsThe entire conspiracy theory about a political Fed is weak on its face and baseless on its merits. What makes anyone so sure they'll fare better in 2024 with the rate of inflation slowing, interest rates falling, and stocks rising?

The International Court of Justice, the U.N.'s highest legal body, will this week hear a case brought by South Africa that accuses Israel of committing genocide against Palestinian people during the assault on the Gaza Strip. Ambassador Reuben Brigety accused South Africa of running guns for Russia via a mystery merchant ship, a South African inquiry found no evidence of the alleged arms shipment, but ties between the two historical allies remained taut. "Over the past two years a succession of frustrations, including South Africa feeling it is being pushed on Russia-Ukraine, the U.S. Ambassador's statements on South African domestic security and on its relationship with Russia, and U.S. policy on China in Africa, have all contributed to the worsening of this relationship," Vandome said. 'Solidarity against apartheid oppression' South Africa's close relationship with Russia is based on a multitude of factors past and present.

Gibson shared some signs that you grew up with a passive parent, and how it might be impacting your life even now. PGA Tour and LIV Golf are working to extend their proposed merger deadline, which was originally set at Dec. 31, Commissioner Jay Monahan told players in a memo on Sunday. The delay is the latest update in a long and tumultuous saga between the PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed LIV Golf that has divided players and could dramatically change professional golf if the merger is completed. PGA Tour and LIV are expected to make a formal decision on the combination ahead of the Masters tournament in April, according to The Telegraph, which first reported the extension. Under the structure of the agreement, PGA Tour would hold a permanent controlling interest in the new entity's board of directors. The agreement also includes the DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour.

Dividend-paying stocks took a backseat to this year's tech-driven market rally, but 2024 could be the year that they come back in vogue. A couple of catalysts could swing the pendulum back in favor of dividend payers in 2024, including the Fed's forecast for three rate cuts in the new year. "Not only do you get the dividend yield and dividend growth, but you get some capital appreciation perhaps – that's where it gets interesting," he added. Special dividend payers Kim Abmeyer, certified financial planner and founder of Abmeyer Wealth Management in Dallas, sees dividend-paying stocks coming into focus for 2024. The energy company in November announced that it raised its regular dividend by 10% and it declared a $1.50 per share special dividend.

CNN —As someone who’s been reporting on the climate crisis for more than a decade, I can say that the most insidious threat to climate action isn’t denial or apathy. That’s tragic, especially in light of the long and frustrating history of fossil fuel interests injecting doubt into policy conversations about the climate crisis. The broad strokes of climate science have been well understood for several decades now. The fallout of that doubt still haunts political conversations about the climate crisis today. In the United States, only 35% of adults talk about the climate crisis at least occasionally, according to a 2021 survey from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

Avoiding mistakes in business and life comes down a few simple things, according to billionaire investor Charlie Munger, who died last week at age 99: good financial habits, integrity and "avoiding toxic people and toxic activities." Munger shared the advice during a Q&A session at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting in May. As for avoiding toxic people, look out for those "who are trying to fool you or lie to you or aren't reliable in meeting their commitments," Munger said. At the shareholders meeting in May, Buffett shared his own thoughts on the topic. To him, most major mistakes in life can be avoided by simply being a good person who acts with integrity.
