This trend then created an “engagement gap” since couples get engaged, on average, about 3.25 years after they begin dating, according to Signet’s proprietary data. About 2.8 million couples, on average, get engaged every year in the United States, said Drosos. Last year, the number slipped to 2.5 million. In 2024, Signet expects engagements will reach 2.4 to 2.5 million. Courtesy of Zales/KAY JewelersDrosos said Signet is able to closely track the yearly engagement cycle because of its customer data platform.

Derna, Libya CNN —Tarek Fahim was taking videos of the water filling behind the dam in the Derna valley in Libya late Saturday night. Almost all they find are dead bodies and more are believed to be under the heaps of crumbled cement. Volunteers in hazmat suits scan the sea for dead bodies in Derna. Sarah Sirgany/CNNAbdel Wahab Haroun, 21, says he retrieved 40 bodies from the sea on Sunday. Derna’s waterfront has become the main staging area for delivering dead bodies and transporting them for burial, in a process that has been kept to one location due to the health hazards of decomposing bodies.

Retail sales rose 0.6% in August, compared with a revised 0.5% increase in July, according to a report issued by the Commerce Department on Thursday. The surge in gas prices is coursing through the economy and could slow down shoppers' momentum heading into the critical holiday shopping season. Excluding gas sales, retail sales were just up 0.2% for August, according to the Commerce Department report. Sales at gas stations rose a robust 5.2%, while furniture and home furnishings stores saw a 1% drop in sales. August's uptick in retail sales, which marks the fifth straight monthly gain, reflects the economy’s resiliency despite a still tough economic environment.

CNN —Two gold necklaces dating from around 2,500 years ago have been found by chance in northwestern Spain by a worker for a local water company. Sergio Marciandi was working in Cavandi, Asturias, on August 29 when he spotted a gold necklace among some rocks. Archaeologists are excited about what further study of the necklaces could reveal. Museo Arqueológico de Asturias“It’s really impressive,” said Arias, who added that the find could boost our understanding of the Iron Age, the period in which they were made. While other gold necklaces from the Iron Age have been found, most were discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries, when limited archaeological techniques meant much of the information about their provenance was lost, Arias explained.

In the 1980s, people in China could land themselves in trouble with the government for their fashion choices. Flared pants and bluejeans were considered “weird attire.” Some government buildings barred men with long hair and women wearing makeup and jewelry. Patrols organized by factories and schools cut flared pants and long hair with scissors. The Communist Party was loosening its tight control over society little by little, and the public was pushing the limits of self-expression and individualism. The battle over the height of women’s heels and the length of men’s hair embodied the struggle.

Bore's discovery has been dubbed the "find of the century," but he can't keep the treasure. Earlier this year, 51-year-old Erlend Bore bought a metal detector after he was advised by his doctor to get off the sofa and find a new hobby. In London, an Elevated but Edgy Jewelry Style

In 2006, Ms. Martin established her namesake brand, which is focused on opulent, sculptural, genderless pieces in gold. Since then, she has weathered the expensive business of operating a fine jewelry business through recessions, lockdowns and other challenges to run a self-funded business with a showroom in a former grain warehouse in the Clerkenwell neighborhood of London. She is a walking advertisement for her latest venture, HMp (or Hannah Martin Pierced), a line of piercing jewelry and a piercing service. Overall, she hopes it will transform what is often a back-alley tattoo parlor-style experience to one that is elevated through handcrafted gold jewelry and premium customer care. “I couldn’t find one that wasn’t really ugly, so I thought I’d better make one,” Ms. Martin, 43, said during a recent interview at her Brutalist-inspired studio.

A Dishy Tell-All About Emily Weiss’s Glossier

GLOSSY: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss’s Glossier, by Marisa MeltzerA Glossier brick and mortar opened in my neighborhood last fall, and because that neighborhood is Williamsburg, I could comfortably declare it to be the brand’s time of death. Here lies Glossier, the millennial pink tombstone’s black etching would read, makeup for pretty people. That the Williamsburg Glossier is neighbored by retail stores for Parachute (bedding), Mejuri (jewelry) and Warby Parker (glasses) does not feel coincidental; all the formerly online-only direct-to-consumer brands are arranged on North Sixth Street in a neat little row. But when the first permanent Glossier showroom opened in SoHo in 2016, it was the cool girl’s place to go after work. Its founder, Emily Weiss, remains the star student in a class of girl bosses who have either imploded or flamed out.

Chains Move Up in the World
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Nazanin Lankarani | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Chains, a foundational element of jewelry design, have been integral to crafting ornaments for as long as humans have been making interlocking rings to adorn our bodies. As Otto Jakob, a German master jeweler, said: “Chains are an archetype in jewelry, and they tell a symbolic and universal story with their own alphabet.”Evolving from Babylonian loop-in-loop techniques to the opulent pieces worn by medieval kings, from Coco Chanel’s gracefully draped chains to the chunky links embraced by rappers, chains have enjoyed an enduring appeal as a cornerstone of jewelry craftsmanship. This year, chains have been bold elements in both high jewelry and fine jewelry lines, reimagined as stand-alone pieces or pulling double duty to carry a pendant. Showcasing the artistry and imagination of their designers, these well-crafted pieces have gone from supporting to starring roles, becoming focal points in collections.

Precious Wire Draws Jewelers Into Its Coils

In the past, such fine wire was used to produce gold cloth for kings and to embroider gowns for queens. Such pieces will be among the more than 200 items displayed in “Treasures of Gold and Silver Wire,” scheduled to open Sept. 29 at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London and run through Nov. 12. The exhibition has been planned to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, which continues to use the medieval spelling of wire. “People think ‘livery’ and they think uniforms. The better word would be guild,” said Karen Watts, the exhibition’s curator and a curator emeritus at the Royal Armouries.

When she saw a pair of drop earrings featuring South Sea pearls, she decided to change her entire jewelry look on the spot. “I was given a pearl necklace in my childhood, and I’ve always been attracted to their simple elegance,” Ms. Patel, 27, said. Last fall, the company received more inquiries than usual from brides interested in pearls. Since then, rentals have been booked out months in advance, Ms. Grunstein said, all the way into 2024.

Thailand Gets Ready to Sparkle
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( David Belcher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Thailand’s history is rich with gemstones, beginning in the 1400s when its mines first produced the sapphires and rubies that adorned the crowns, swords and even the footwear of the country’s royalty. And as recently as May, jewelry fans took note of the glittering sapphire and diamond necklace and earring set that Queen Suthida of Thailand wore at King Charles III’s coronation in London. But since the 1970s, Thailand has mostly been known as a global hub for cutting, polishing, heating and trading stones, doing business with its gem-rich neighbors Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, along with countries far beyond. The event offers “a lot of opportunities for local businesses to be exposed to overseas buyers,” said Sumed Prasongpongchai, chief executive of the Gem & Jewelry Institute of Thailand (G.I.T. “We promote the fair heavily in the Middle East, Europe and America.”

CNN —A vast collection of art, furniture, silver, ceramics, and jewelry long held in the private collection of the Rothschild banking dynasty sold for more than $62.6 million over several auctions at Christie’s New York. The sales, which concluded on Tuesday, marked the first dedicated auction in North America of works from the French branch of the long-time banking family. Coincidentally, the cameo last came to auction at Christie’s in 1899, when it sold for £3,750 (about £395,000 or $496,000, in today’s money), shortly before it is believed to have entered the Rothschild collection. We don’t get a bulk of this type of material coming up for sale anymore,” Rendell said. As for why the family chose to sell the collection now, Rendell believes it may have been a “rationalization” and a “generational shift” in attitude.
