J. Michael Cline, the co-founder of Fandango, an online ticketing company that changed how Americans went to the movies, died this week after falling from the twentieth floor of a Manhattan hotel, according to the police. New York City police officers, who responded to a 911 call at the Kimberly Hotel on Tuesday, “found an unconscious and unresponsive male with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position,” a spokesman for the police said in a statement. The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a suicide. Mr. Cline, who was 64, co-founded Fandango in 2000 and left the company in 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile. The company — familiar to many from its splashy logo, an orange “F” in the shape of a ticket stub — was later acquired by Comcast and is currently owned by NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. For years, the company dominated movie-ticket sales, handling ticketing for several major theater chains and making money by charging a processing fee for online ticket sales and by selling advertising on its site.

London CNN —Amazon’s warehouses are especially dangerous for workers during the company’s annual Prime Day event, as well as the holiday season, according to an investigation by the US Senate. Prime Day, held on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, is “a major cause of injuries for the warehouse workers who make it possible,” said a report released Monday by Sen. Bernie Sanders, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. But Amazon’s total injury rate, which includes injuries the company does not have to report to OSHA, was just under 45 per 100 workers, the report said. Amazon raked in $12.7 billion in sales on July 11 and 12 last year, its Prime Day 2023 event, and said July 11 was the single biggest sales day in the company’s history. When faced with worker injuries, Amazon provides minimal medical care.”Amazon holds Prime Day in July every year to juice sales numbers during what are typically slow summer months.

CNN —The US military is ending its temporary pier mission off the Gaza coast that has been plagued with challenges after roughly 20 days of operational use, as humanitarian aid begins being brought in through an Israeli port instead. Cooper said the pier was operational for “a little more than 20 days” and delivered 19.4 million pounds of aid. The US military will continue to help deliver the remaining aid from Cyprus to Ashdod, Cooper said. “A temporary pier would enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day,” Biden said. During the same storm, four US Army vessels supporting the pier were washed ashore on beaches in Gaza and Israel.

An Amazon workers pull a cart of packages for delivery on E 14th Street on July 12, 2022 in New York City. Amazon Prime Day, the 48-hour discount blitz that kicks off Tuesday, is a "major" cause of worker injuries, according to the preliminary results of a Senate probe. The Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on Tuesday released the interim results of a yearlong investigation into Amazon's warehouse working conditions just as the company holds its annual Prime Day deals event. The report cites an internal Amazon document, titled "2021 Prime Day Lessons Learned," which states Amazon "met only 71.2 percent of its hiring target," between May and June of 2021, ending the week of that year's Prime Day event. Amazon has faced scrutiny in recent years over its workplace injury record and its treatment of warehouse and delivery workers.

BALTIMORE AP —When Trea Ellinger left a Baltimore drug rehab facility last summer, he assured his anxious mother that everything was fine. His mother, Lori Ellinger, questions the autopsy’s findings and wants to know why paramedics decided to use an injectable sedative. “As long as he’s not lying face down, that would be great,” one of the medics says. Four minutes later, the medics discussed getting Ellinger repositioned, but they didn’t act immediately. Ellinger was unhandcuffed and placed on his back as medics began performing chest compressions, according to the report.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

But it remained unclear on Sunday if the primary target, Muhammad Deif, the leader of the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, was among the dead. A Hamas official, Khalil al-Hayya, who lives in exile, said in an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic television that Mr. Deif had not been killed and was listening to Mr. Netanyahu’s words and “mocking” them. Hamas has not offered evidence that Mr. Deif survived. Mr. Deif is the second most senior Hamas figure in Gaza, after its leader in the territory, Yahya Sinwar. New York CNN —US stock futures barely budged after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday, signaling calm in the markets as Trump survived the incident. Dow futures rose 65 points, or 0.2%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.1% and Nasdaq Composite futures were unchanged. On Saturday, the former president was shot in the ear during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in what the FBI says was an assassination attempt. Markets crave stability, and an assassination attempt against the presumptive nominee might have thrown that into chaos. But Trump appears to have escaped with mostly superficial injuries, and the market’s thesis of the race hasn’t changed: Trump remains the frontrunner to become the next president.
