After a 20-second-long, caught-on-camera dispute, Codrington, 35, slashed Cunningham across the neck with a knife, leaving him to die, Essig said. At 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, Codrington entered a Lower East Side bar with a pit bull and a baseball bat, Essig said. Afterward, Essig said, Codrington went home, then said he’d “cool off” with a walk through the park. In May, a 48-year-old man was shot and killed riding a train between Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. Despite random acts, the number of crimes reported on public transit by September was averaging slightly below pre-pandemic levels, though ridership was also down.

DHAKA, Dec 25 (Reuters) - India's stand-in captain KL Rahul heaped praise on middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer after their thrilling victory in the second test against Bangladesh while home captain Shakib Al Hasan was left to rue missed opportunities. However, Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin then forged an unbroken 71-run stand to frustrate Bangladesh and pull off a thrilling victory for the tourists. Mehidy Hasan (5-63) and Shakib (2-50) wreaked havoc with the ball, but Iyer gave a spin masterclass to secure India's victory. That proved a costly mistake in the end, but the hosts had also missed four chances in India's first innings. "It is slightly disappointing, as other teams don't miss the chances that we are missing," said Bangladesh captain Shakib.
The U.S. House’s Jan. 6 committee has performed its task with a dignity that verges on parody. They are doing criminal referrals while Rome burns. I think the criminal referrals are completely appropriate and, if anything, fail to capture the true scope of his malfeasance. He said as much himself in response to the Jan. 6 committee referral. One of the strongest grounds for prosecuting Trump for Jan. 6 is that only accountability will prevent something like it from happening again.
Sara and Tony Robinson told their 30,000 YouTube followers they wanted to "quit" Airbnb. They won't pull their 22 active properties off Airbnb, but they'll try to increase direct bookings. The couple added that they will not delist their 22 active properties from Airbnb entirely, but rather embark on an aggressive push to lure direct bookings. Airbnb prohibits hosts from giving guests who book via Airbnb a direct-booking link, and bans moving conversations off the platform or embedding any links in instruction manuals. More YouTube channels: The Robinsons want to create additional YouTube accounts with content showing off activities in the local markets for their properties.

New York CNN —Staffers at The Washington Post are livid at publisher Fred Ryan. Video posted on Twitter by national reporter Annie Gowen showed Ryan walk off stage as staffers peppered him with questions. In fact, I haven’t spoken to a single person at The Post yet who has gone to bat for the publisher. Buzbee indicated to staffers on Wednesday that she had only learned about the layoff situation the night before. “The mood is really grim,” one staffer candidly told me.
A bomb threat case against the suspect in the Club Q shooting went nowhere last year because the relatives declined to testify, Colorado authorities said Thursday. “The only way that it [the bomb threat case] would have prevented the [Club Q] tragedy is if the witnesses actually were present at trial, testified and somebody was convicted," Allen told reporters. That day, Aldrich’s grandmother said they had been living in fear, according to the affidavit. "It would not have prevented the Club Q shooting." Two weapons were seized from Aldrich at the time of the bomb threat arrest, Allen said.

In many places, poverty, powerful interests and a lack of law enforcement make habitat loss especially hard to address. Prince Harry with Meghan Markle appeared in public together for the first time at the Invictus Games in Toronto. Aside from showing the story of their courtship, the six episodes of “Harry & Meghan” also look set to highlight long-running grievances that have roiled Britain's royal family for years. The British tabloids have intensely scrutinized Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, publishing stories about her estranged family following her engagement and marriage to Harry in May 2018. In addition, Harry is challenging in court a decision by the British government to deny him police protection while in Britain. “In the Netflix trailer it’s implied the photographers, including me, were trying to get a shot of the royal couple — but that’s nonsense,” he told the tabloid.
LONDON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - British American Tobacco (BATS.L) said on Thursday it expects full-year revenue growth of between 2% and 4% at constant currency rates, as more people are using its e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products. BAT forecast mid-single digit adjusted diluted earnings per share growth on a constant currency basis for the year ending Dec. 31. The Lucky Strike cigarette maker also expects "strong adjusted operating margin improvement despite increasing inflation in our supply chain." The company added that sales of its combustible cigarette brands were flat in the third quarter but did not provide a full-year sales forecast for that business. England scent victory after bold declaration

Having taken a 78-run lead in the runfest, England declared their second innings on 264-7 to set Pakistan an improbable victory target of 343 with four sessions to go. Opener Imam-ul-Haq (43) and debutant Saud Shakeel (24) were resisting England's victory march when bad light stopped play. Agha Salman's breezy 53 frustrated England who had to toil for about 75 minutes to claim the last three Pakistan wickets. England were rattled early in their second innings with Naseem Shah in the thick of things. Naseem dismissed Ben Duckett, one of four century-makers in England's first innings, for a first-ball duck with the second delivery of the innings.

New York CNN Business —CNN on Thursday executed sweeping layoffs and implemented a series of changes that impacted multiple divisions across the news organization, including ending live programming on HLN, the company’s chief executive, Chris Licht, said in a memo to employees. The layoffs, which started Wednesday and were expected to impact hundreds of employees, largely had been completed by Thursday afternoon. The series of changes, which came after Licht conducted a months-long review of CNN’s business after taking over in May as the network’s head, notably included the ending of live programming on HLN, CNN’s longtime sister channel. Discovery, CNN’s parent company. Some of those changes have already been implemented, as CNN has made smaller cuts to parts of its business in the last several months.
New York CNN Business —CNN on Wednesday informed employees that layoffs had commenced, a move that is expected to impact hundreds of staffers at the global news network and mark the deepest cuts to the organization in years. CNN declined to say on Wednesday how many employees precisely would be impacted by the layoffs. The layoffs come as media companies are being battered by brutal economic headwinds that have taken a bat to the advertising sector. Social media companies such as Facebook (FB)-parent Meta, which also rely on advertising revenue, have also executed layoffs in recent months. After Licht took over as head of CNN, he conducted a months-long review of the business.
CNN —Death metal fans might just have a new animal mascot. Some bats use the same vocal structures as death metal singers to make their unique vocalizations, a new study has found. This allowed the scientists to directly observe the vocal membranes and ventricular folds, also called “false vocal folds,” vibrating at different frequencies. These are “the first direct observations” of these vocal structures in Daubenton’s bats, the researchers said. Ventricular folds, or false vocal folds, are located on top of the true vocal cords.
CNN —The Covid-19 pandemic has carried a key lesson for public health officials, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Monday: When talking to Americans, be clear that science is often a moving target. “Hopefully, we could have been more on top of appreciating the dynamic nature of how things change, thinking that it wasn’t aerosol spread in the beginning, and then you find out it is aerosol spread. Experts agree that the virus almost certainly jumped into humans from an animal market in China but that they may never know for sure. “It’s possible that there was a lab leak,” Fauci said. Fauci criticized China’s controversial zero-Covid policy, saying shutdowns “should always be a temporary phenomenon, not a long-range strategy,” and should be done with an end point in mind, such as buying time to secure PPE or provide vaccinations.

Fungal infections are more widespread than doctors or patients realize, research suggests. People generally get fungal infections after breathing in spores. Thompson’s paper came just weeks after another study revealed high rates of fungal disease diagnoses far outside their traditionally understood geographies. A World Health Organization report in October also found that severe fungal infections became more prevalent among people with pre-existing health issues during the Covid pandemic. In some cases, fungal infections can take months of treatment to clear and may become chronic.
The Trump Organization tax-fraud trial is in its fourth week; ex-CFO Allen Weisselberg is testifying. But was Allen Weisselberg, Trump's first and only chief financial officer, ever really flipped? Or Trump's company, which is still paying him $1.4 million this year in salary plus bonus? Here are five reasons Weisselberg is shaping up to be the worst prosecution witness ever. Donald Trump or Eric Trump approved those executive salaries, bonuses and perks, Hoffinger, the prosecutor, told jurors, who have seen many of the signed checks and signatures that prove this.

Having hosted the game for almost six centuries, “the home of golf” – as Scotland is known – was recognized as the World’s Best Golf Destination for the very first time at the ninth edition of the annual World Golf Awards in Abu Dhabi this week. Despite the dominance of its legendary St. Andrews Old Course in the World’s Best Golf Course category – with five successive wins after the award’s inception – Scotland had never been recognized as the sport’s best destination. Sona Movsesian was an NBC page and landed her assistant job through an internal recommendation. But at times, I really don't act like it. I'm working with, in my opinion, the funniest person on television, and I'm working on a show that I'm proud of. I think I will be Conan's assistant until he dies — I'm going to ride this wave for as long as I can. Most people don't think of an assistant job in entertainment as a forever-job.
LAS VEGAS — A former model charged in the beating death of a California doctor whose body was found in a car trunk outside Las Vegas has accepted a plea agreement. Kelsey Turner, now 29, entered an Alford plea Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder in the 2019 killing of 71-year-old psychiatrist Thomas Kirk Burchard, court records show, according to NBC affiliate KSNV of Las Vegas. Prosecutors say Turner, her boyfriend and their roommate were involved in Burchard's death. Diana Pena, the roommate, testified Turner was romantically involved with Burchard and was upset by images and messages saved on his phone. Investigators were able to locate Turner at her home, which records showed Burchard paid her rent.
