To many, "Baby Reindeer" is known as the Netflix series that swept the internet in the spring of 2024 with its harrowing, seemingly true tale based on creator Richard Gadd's experience of being stalked. There are cracks forming in the US jobs market

CNN —The pandemic threw the US job market into chaos, but four years later, things finally seem to be back to normal. Most indicators support the idea that the labor market is no longer overheated and could easily maintain a new normal of steady, but slower growth. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 4.1%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. “This is a labor market that’s otherwise moderated,” Nick Bunker, director of North American economic research at Indeed, told CNN. The same goes for the prime-age labor force participation rate, which at 83.7% also is the highest in 23 years.

On Sunday, officials attempted to block opposition volunteers from voting centers, and in some places, they succeeded. The QR code scans gave a team of campaign workers immediate access to voting results, which they tabulated Sunday night and Monday. The National Electoral Council has not yet shared the tallies on its website, which has been down since Monday. While it is not obligated to post images of the tally sheets, it has previously shared each sheet’s totals. The campaign needed to get them all fully scanned using equipment especially designed to copy the tally sheets.

Standing in front of a lectern on Thursday, his voice at times taut with anger, Britain’s prime minister announced a crackdown on what he called the “gangs of thugs” who instigated violent unrest in several towns this week. But the question of how to confront one of the key accelerants — a flood of online misinformation about a deadly stabbing attack — remained largely unanswered. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called out online companies directly, after false information about the identity of the 17-year-old suspected in the attack spread rapidly on their platforms, no matter how many times police and government officials pushed back against the claims. Three girls died after the attacker rampaged through a dance class in Southport, northwest England, on Monday. Of the eight children injured, five remain in the hospital, along with their teacher, who had tried to protect them.

According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. And an NBC News review of hiring practices around the country shows that there is a patchwork of hiring standards that vary from state to state and from community to community. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. In Illinois, in addition to its state law, city councils and county commissions can also set their own stricter hiring rules. Using the California hiring standards as a model, Guller tells his clients to send seasoned investigators out to interview a person’s former romantic partners, neighbors, employers and even patrons at their favorite bars.

The Guardian said Brown wrote to police after documents that were recently made public during civil court proceedings reportedly showed Lewis met with detectives in 2011. After he was hired by the Post, Lewis also tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. In May, Brown wrote to the Metropolitan Police and said he was told that the “Met’s special inquiry team” would look into it. The security threats were believed to be genuine and were not devised as part of an alleged ‘cover-up’ and there is no evidence to show that is the case,” the News UK spokesperson said. The allegations swirling around Lewis have roiled The Washington Post newsroom in recent months.

The U.K. stock market is likely to rise over the course of 12 months, if the Bank of England cuts interest rates on Thursday and history repeats itself, according to a CNBC Pro analysis. Economists say the forecasts for whether the U.K. central bank will either reduce or hold rates are a close call. A decision to lower interest rates — which sit at at 5.25% currently — would mark the first time monetary police has been eased in Britain since the hiking cycle began in December 2021. The analysis found that, on three occasions the index had risen more than 20% on average within a year after an interest rate cut. For instance, the domestically focused index of 250 stocks rose by 17% across three months after the Bank of England cut rates in 1998.

After a week of oversights and failures, the officers protecting former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., still had one last chance to get it right. It began when a local police officer peered over the roof of the AGR International warehouse near the rally grounds and found the suspicious man he and other officers were hunting. Ninety minutes of confusion about Thomas Crooks’s intentions and whereabouts had ended in an instant. “Long gun!” the officer broadcast over the local law enforcement radio system, according to congressional testimony from ‌the Secret Service this week. It was urgent news that should have instantly traveled to a command center shared by the local police and the Secret Service, and then to agents close enough to throw their bodies in front of Mr. Trump.

CNN —JD Vance is making a second pass at introducing himself to America as the Ohio senator attempts to put his uneven rollout as Donald Trump’s running mate in the rearview mirror. Vance is also expected to begin holding news conferences with reporters as early as this week, the source said. At a closed-door fundraiser in Oklahoma City last week, Trump’s finance team was hoping the former president’s new running mate would raise $1 million. The campaign was well aware of Vance’s past criticisms of Trump and the deeply anti-abortion views he vocally defended. CNN —Alleged Sinaloa cartel cofounder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada appeared Thursday in federal court in Texas for his latest hearing since his arrest a week ago in an intrigue-packed case centered on one of the world’s most powerful and deadly drug trafficking organizations. He was arrested the prior day in El Paso alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, the 38-year-old son of infamous cartel boss and founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The scene outside the courthouse in El Paso showed a heavy security presence, with federal agents and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling the perimeter. Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman’s assertion raised new questions about why Guzmán López flew to Texas if he had no cooperation agreement with American authorities. “Joaquín Guzmán López forcibly kidnapped my client,” attorney Frank Pérez said in a statement.

In an unusual move, a British court on Thursday named the 17-year-old suspect in a stabbing rampage that left three children dead and eight injured in northwestern England early this week. The suspect, Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, appeared in a court in Liverpool to face three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article. Although the police said repeatedly that the suspect had been born in Cardiff, Wales, misinformation spread rapidly on social media claiming that he was an undocumented immigrant. The proliferation of those erroneous reports persuaded the judge, Andrew Menary, to lift the typical restrictions on the news media’s ability to report the identity of an underage suspect. “Continuing to prevent the full reporting has the disadvantage of allowing others to spread misinformation, in a vacuum,” Judge Menary said, according to the Press Association.
