"Other than that I haven't seen anyone that can guarantee it," Trump told reporters. If Jesus came down and said, 'I want to be Speaker,' he would do it," Trump told reporters in New Hampshire. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is considered the leading candidate, but he has a complicated relationship with Trump. Trump's confidence in Christ belies some House Republicans who have lamented that if Jesus were to return, even he would struggle to unite their fractious group. Jesus is far from the only hypothetical religious figure that has been offered a lament to House Republicans' struggles.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Day 20 without a House speaker, and Republicans found themselves starting over on Monday — bumbling ahead with few ideas about who will lead, what they are fighting over and when they will get Congress working again. Nine lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. McCarthy himself calls the whole spectacle “embarrassing” for the House Republicans whose majority is being wasted away and for the U.S. government that cannot fully function. House Republicans entered the weekend without their leading speaker candidate, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who dropped out of the race on Friday. "This is embarrassing for the Republican Party, embarrassing for the nation," former speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney did not voice support for any specific candidate, saying on CNN's "State of the Union" that the current state of House Republican dysfunction is not surprising. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who served from 1995 to 1999, said the House Republicans are dragging their feet. Of the nine candidates in the speaker race so far, none are women.

Anna Colliton has lived in her apartment in Pelham Parkway in the Bronx for five years, but she suspects the mice have been there far longer. They also seem to have an unusual favorite food: the spare packets of ketchup she keeps alongside takeout menus in a kitchen drawer. Mice are commonly used in medical research because of their physiological and genetic similarities to humans. But their evolutionary changes can also be observed over a relatively short period, making them an ideal subject for research into how wild animals adapt to, say, urbanization. The Drexel researchers are studying the effects of urban environments on the evolution of house mice in New York, Philadelphia and Richmond, Va.: relatively old cities, where time and development may have caused differences to accumulate between the mice in each city and those in surrounding areas.

Rep. Jim Jordan was again decisively defeated in his bid to become speaker on Friday, marking his third failed ballot this week and by the largest margin yet as his support continues to erode. Yet it remained unclear whether the divisive lawmaker would yield in his strong-armed bid for leadership amid a growing urgency for House Republicans to resolve the crisis they created. Twenty-five House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, growing by three votes since Wednesday and two in the first vote a day prior, as things are trending in the wrong direction for Jordan. Unlike McCarthy, Jordan has the backing of most House conservatives. Still, Jordan faces opposition from a number of sides – from moderates, from appropriators and from McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise allies, among others.

Last winter, residential retail natural gas prices exceeded those of the previous 10 winters, the EIA said. And in the Northeast, which historically has had higher natural gas bills, the average household with natural gas heating is expected to pay $761, in contrast to $924 last winter. Reps. Patrick McHenry and Jim Jordan consulted on speaker talks in the House Wednesday. Photo: Tom Williams/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—Republican speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan said he would embark on a third floor vote after a plan to temporarily put caretaker speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry in charge of the House ran into sharp objections from conservatives. “I am still running for speaker and I plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race,” Jordan said after leaving a heated closed-door meeting of House Republicans. He said that he first wanted to talk to the GOP lawmakers who voted against him, and that a pitch to elect a temporary speaker didn’t have the support of the conference.

Jordan will almost certainly remain chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, a post from which he has led the GOP's efforts to impeach Biden.

Sales rose in the Northeast but fell elsewhere, although sales were down year to year throughout the country. Sales are now running at an annual rate of 3.96 million, down 15.4% from 4.68 million a year ago. Like many Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere he feels Arab states have not done enough to support the Palestinian cause, especially those who have normalised ties with Israel. Israel reiterated it would not allow aid through its crossing with Gaza until Hamas released about 200 hostages seized during its cross-border attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Net worth surged for the typical family during the pandemic era, largely on the back on higher home and stock prices and government stimulus measures, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday in its triennial Survey of Consumer Finances. Net worth is a measure of household assets after accounting for liabilities. After accounting for inflation, median net worth jumped to $192,900, a 37% increase from 2019-22, the Fed found. It was also more than double the next-largest increase on record: Between 2004 and 2007, right before the Great Recession, real median net worth rose 18%. Increases in net worth were "near universal across different types of families," the Fed said.

But the income gains were largest among the highest-earning families, and fastest among white families, with income at the median actually registering small declines for both Hispanic and Black families, the Fed found in its latest Survey of Consumer Finances, conducted every three years. Median net worth rose sharply for all ethnic and income groups, the survey showed, though the lowest-earning 20% of households fared the worst, with a 2% decline on average over the period versus double-digit increases for all other income groups. The survey showed other stark contrasts. Still, Black households had the lowest median net worth at about $45,000, 27% below the next lowest, Hispanics, at about $62,000. By contrast, median household net worth for white families was $285,000 and for Asians - measured on their own for the first time in this year's survey - was $536,000.

In addition, the jump in housing starts partially recouped the decline in August. The rebound in homebuilding probably reflected permits approved several months ago before mortgage rates broke above 7%. Single-family housing starts, which account for the bulk of homebuilding, increased 3.2% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 963,000 units last month, the Commerce Department said. Single-family starts rose in the Midwest, West and the densely populated South, but plunged 19.0% in the Northeast. Though permits are a leading indicator, economists cautioned against being too optimistic about homebuilding prospects, citing the soaring mortgage rates and souring builder sentiment.
