ChatGPT now on Android in some countries including US
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
July 25 (Reuters) - ChatGPT is now available for Android users in the United States, India, Bangladesh and Brazil, the viral chatbot's owner OpenAI said on Tuesday, as it looks to take advantage of the popularity of the artificial intelligence tool. As AI becomes widely used in tasks such as content writing to coding, San Francisco-based OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Android last week to further expand its user base. ChatGPT, which was launched by the Sam Altman-led company in November last year, has been available on Apple's (AAPL.O) iOS platform since May. The viral success of ChatGPT has triggered a wave of enthusiasm in AI, prompting companies such as Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O) to pour billions of dollars into the technology. OpenAI said it would expand the rollout on Android to additional countries over the next week.

After surpassing 100 million user sign-ups in less than a week, user engagement on Threads has slowed. Threads daily active users fell from 49 million on July 7, two days after its launch, to 23.6 million users last Friday, according to a report published this week by web traffic analysis firm Similarweb. “I’m very optimistic about how the Threads community is coming together,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on the platform Monday. “We’re clearly way out over our skis on this,” Mosseri said in a Threads post the week of the app’s launch. Threads could be a way for Meta to eke additional engagement time out of its massive existing user base.

Some users told the Journal they prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps for its design and usability. Rabinowitz mow finds that Apple Maps offers public transit directions that are faster and more creative than those from Google Maps, the Journal reported. Apple Maps, he said, also takes into consideration commuting disruptions like subway outages better than its competitor does. She has since begun choosing it over from Google Maps, as she says Apple Maps has a more clear and legible display. Google Maps, he said, might be better for those who want to use their personal data to inform what information gets displayed.

The Commerce Department blacklisted two European cyber firms that build spyware software, the Commerce Department announced Tuesday, including technology hawked by both firms that was used to surveil Meta users and reportedly at least one Meta employee. The software exploited vulnerabilities in Android and iOS software and deployed hundreds of spoof Meta accounts to surveil activists, politicians and journalists around the world. Meta in December 2021 warned thousands of Facebook users that they'd been targeted by spyware-for-hire software, including Predator. The New York Times reported extensively on Intellexa's Predator product, and the company's efforts to sell it to a Ukrainian intelligence agency. Intellexa's Predator was also used by Greek intelligence to spy on a Meta trust and safety employee, the Times reported.

Russian government ministries are beginning to ban officials from using Apple iPhones. Russia's trade ministry will impose a ban starting Monday, the Financial Times reported. Beginning July 17, employees at Russia's trade ministry will no longer be allowed to use iPhones on the job, the Financial Times reported. In March, the Kremlin told officials to stop using Apple products, citing fears they were vulnerable to US hacking. Following the Russian claims, Apple announced patches to its iOS software, crediting researchers at the Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab with identifying vulnerabilities.
