A couple browses a car's sticker price. For example, Mercedes-Benz purchasers paid between 2% to 4% more than the sticker price. On top of that, the average price of used cars has been steadily dropping, even if that was coming down from a very high point. In August, the average used car sold for $28,061, a 4% year-over-year decline but still up nearly 40% from December 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic. The recent decline is a function of used car sales slowing, down 9% in August from a year earlier, making it even more likely you might get a good deal on a used car lot.
WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) said Friday it will break ground this month on a $5.5 billion electric vehicle and battery plant in the United States. Hyundai plans to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025 with an annual capacity of 300,000 units. The groundbreaking comes amid anger from Korea and the European Union over U.S. electric vehicle tax policy. The law made about 70% of EVs immediately ineligible for the tax credits of up to $7,500 per vehicle. Biden has expressed willingness to continue talks with South Korea over recent U.S. legislation that denies subsidies to most foreign makers of electric vehicles (EVs), South Korea said earlier this month.
Yasuhide Mizuno, the chairman and CEO of Sony Honda Mobility Inc., speaks during a news conference in Tokyo, Japan, on Oct. 13, 2022. The Sony -Honda joint venture focused on electric vehicles plans to begin deliveries to the United States and Japan in 2026. Sony Honda Mobility, as it's known, aims to start taking pre-orders for its vehicle in the first half of 2025, and hopes to start sales before the end of that year. "For sales, SHM plans to focus on online sales," a statement released Thursday said. U.S. deliveries are slated to start in the spring of 2026, with deliveries to the Japanese market happening in the latter half of the same year.
Sony Honda Mobility said on Thursday it was aiming to deliver the first of the unnamed EV by 2026, starting in the United States, and will sell them online. Honda has about 1,100 Honda dealers and 270 Acura dealers. "I get teaming up with Sony, but it should be done in conjunction with the dealer network, not outside it," he added. Sony Honda officials promised the vehicle - to be built at one of Honda's Ohio plants - will include advanced driver-assist features and a new software system developed by Sony that offers cloud-connected services that generate recurring revenue. Sony Honda officials declined to say under what brand the vehicle will be sold.
ZAMA, Japan, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Chinese renewable energy group Envision's battery business is seeking potential investors, as it looks to fund a planned 30-fold expansion in its battery production capacity for electric vehicles (EV), the unit's chief executive said. Envision AESC has also said it plans to supply batteries for Honda Motor Co (7267.T) and Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE). The company hopes to break into the top-tier EV supply rankings by leveraging its more than a decade of battery production experience. Matsumoto said the company is aiming to expand its share in the global EV battery market by roughly five times to about 15% by 2025 or 2026. Solid-state battery technology involves a high-capacity energy storage device that improves on lithium-ion batteries, replacing the liquid or gel-form electrolyte with a solid, conductive material.

The update from the joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility, is the first since the two companies launched the project in June. Sony will provide the software system for the new car, from the onboard controllers to cloud-based services that will connect with entertainment and payment systems. The still-to-be named EV will likely be manufactured by Honda at one of its plants in Ohio. The new EV will be delivered to the Japanese market in the second half of 2026.

The global financial system is “like a pressure cooker” right now, said Chris Turner, global head of markets at ING. Once, the idea of paying sticker price at a dealership was laughable — a trap that only suckers would fall into. The South Korean company’s sedans and SUVs are selling for about 6% over their sticker price, according to data from Edmunds.com. Used car prices — which shot up to dizzying heights early in the pandemic — have finally begun falling. “Speak to any (very) large used car dealer and you will hear the same - an absolute vortex of deflation is coming to used car prices,” tweeted Ophir Gottlieb, the CEO of Capital Market Laboratories, earlier this month.

CNN Business —Reversing a century of tradition, most cars now sell for over the manufacturer’s sticker price. Roughly tied for second, at 4% above sticker price on average, are Honda, Hyundai and the luxury SUV brand Land Rover. Kia Motors AmericaAdding to the pressure is that, while manufacturing slowdowns have hit the whole industry, Kia models are especially hard to find.
