But addressing 14 risk factors over the course of one’s life — starting in childhood — could prevent or delay nearly half of cases, according to a large report by 27 dementia experts. “The progress in preventing and treating dementia is accelerating.”The initial 12 risk factors were linked with 40% of cases, but the new report suggests addressing the 14 risk factors could help eliminate or delay 45% of dementia cases, said Livingston, a professor of psychiatry of older people at University College London. This “critical” update calls attention to two risk factors that preventive neurologist Dr. Richard Issacson says his clinical practice has been evaluating for over a decade. Influencing brain functionThe report doesn’t establish with certainly that these risk factors directly cause dementia, experts said. But other research has provided theories on the link between these vulnerabilities and dementia risk.

Hamas and Iranian state media said Wednesday that the 62-year-old had been killed in the Iranian capital Tehran. Hamas claimed Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli “strike” on his residence, while the Israeli military declined to comment when contacted by CNN. Haniyeh’s death strikes a significant blow to Hamas at a time when tensions are flaring across the Middle East over the devastating war in Gaza, and raises fraught questions about the future of negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Haniyeh was born in a refugee camp near Gaza City, and joined Hamas in the late 1980s during the First Intifada, or uprising. Meta reported revenue growth of 22% from a year earlier to $39.07 billion, with 98% of its sales coming from advertising, primarily on Facebook and Instagram. Its growth rate was double that of Google's ad business, which saw sales increase 11% to $64.6 billion, Alphabet said in its earnings report last week. Meanwhile, Pinterest and Spotify , which are both significantly smaller than Meta, reported revenue growth of 21% and 20%, respectively, in their latest reports. As in previous quarters, Li said Meta's advertising business benefited from online commerce, gaming and the media and entertainment sectors, and that ad growth continued to be strongest in the Asia-Pacific region. She said the company's "improved ad performance" helped lift overall ad prices despite slowing growth in that region.

In one section, the One Medical team discusses their most disruptive ideas, and this is where the new AI tool was proposed. Big foundation models are often used as a starting point to develop more focused, specialized AI models and tools. "We do not use our customers' protected health information to train our current health AI models, and to imply we do would be incorrect." It also hoped to handle 87,000 customer service contacts in 2024 through "additional self-service content and the AI healthcare assistant service," the document stated.

It determines the cost of your day-to-day life, such as your mortgage, credit card bills and business loans. You might not know it’s there, but you’ll sorely miss it if it ever goes away. The $27 trillion U.S. Treasury market, the largest government bond market in the world by multiples, is the starting point for the cost of capital. Policy proposals from Donald Trump and his circle threaten the huge advantages the United States enjoys from this market. Still, the potential fallout from this particular set of ideas would be a significant disruption to the Treasury market and everything that depends on it, including interest rates.

In initial data from late June and through July, about 8 in 10 Americans said each week that they’d read or heard at least something about Biden or Trump, respectively. But the focus had shifted away from his criminal conviction: first to his debate against Biden, and then to the assassination attempt against him. By contrast, two more standard campaign milestones – the Republican National Convention and Trump’s selection of a running mate – drew less public attention. The Breakthrough survey project will run throughout the 2024 campaign, tracking the things Americans say they read, hear and see about the candidates. Looking at the trend over time shows a sharp divergence between the conversations around Trump and Biden following the presidential debate.

The director of Project 2025, the right-wing policy blueprint and personnel project prepared for the next Republican president that became a political cudgel used by Democrats, is departing after the effort drew criticism from former President Donald J. Trump. The project, which has been a collaborative effort across the conservative ecosystem led by the Heritage Foundation, has become a lightning rod on the 2024 campaign trail. The group had spent months developing an expansive set of policies, and the president of the Heritage Foundation said on Tuesday it was concluding its drafting of new ideas as planned. “When we began Project 2025 in April 2022, we set a timeline for the project to conclude its policy drafting after the two party conventions this year, and we are sticking to that timeline,” Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, said in a statement praising Paul Dans, the outgoing director. Mr. Trump has tried to distance himself from the specifics inside the 900-page plan for months, saying the sweeping agenda to reshape the federal government is not his, though many of the proposals were crafted by people who served in the first Trump administration.

It appears that Apple opted for Google's TPU chips over Nvidia's for its AI development. An Apple research paper highlights the use of TPUv5p chips from Google for iPhone AI. AdvertisementIt looks like Apple has confirmed it's using Google's chips for Apple Intelligence — not Nvidia's. There was no mention of Nvidia in an Apple research paper published on Monday that discussed foundation language models developed to power Apple Intelligence features. In fact, the tech giant wrote that it used TPUv4 and TPUv5p chips, Google's tensing processing units, to train its artificial intelligence tools.

CNN —The director of Project 2025, the conservative blueprint for a potential second Donald Trump term, has stepped down amid intense criticism including from the former president. In addition to stepping down from Project 2025, Dans is also leaving the Heritage Foundation. “Project 2025 is on the ballot because Donald Trump is on the ballot,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. But Project 2025 has lately become a lightning rod for other ideas Trump hasn’t explicitly backed. He has also assured Trump’s supporters that Project 2025 would become a reality if the former president returned to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Earning the trust of your boss and the rest of your colleagues is a key foundation of building a successful career. That's why Jeff Bezos wrote that good leaders "earn trust" as part of Amazon's famous list of 16 leadership principles. Brink of warTensions were already high in the region before Hezbollah's lethal rocket strike. Following Hezbollah's rocket strike, US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Sunday that the US was in "continuous discussions" with Israel and Lebanon, hoping to restore calm. "Hezbollah is also operating in Syria, and it is likely that Israel will target Hezbollah's military sites there at a greater scale than before," she told BI. According to Khatib, the possibility of a wider war in the region remains low because it is not in anyone's interest — it would be damaging to Israel, Hezbollah, Iran, and the US, she said.

Apple said on Monday that the artificial intelligence models underpinning Apple Intelligence, its AI system, were pretrained on processors designed by Google, a sign that Big Tech companies are looking for alternatives to Nvidia when it comes to the training of cutting-edge AI. Apple's choice of Google's homegrown Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for training was detailed in a technical paper just published by the company. Separately, Apple released a preview version of Apple Intelligence for some devices on Monday. Apple doesn't name Google or Nvidia in its 47-page paper, but did note its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on "Cloud TPU clusters." "This system allows us to train the AFM models efficiently and scalably, including AFM-on-device, AFM-server, and larger models," Apple said in the paper.

The Lesser-Known Side of Harris’s Identity: Asian American

Daniel Chiang can remember one Asian American who ran for president in 2020: Andrew Yang, a Taiwanese American entrepreneur. But he was surprised to learn last week that there was another person running for president then, and in 2024, who counted herself an Asian American: Kamala Harris. But Ms. Harris, whose mother emigrated from India and whose father emigrated from Jamaica, is less known as an Indian American and Asian American. Asked to name a famous Asian American, only 2 percent of Americans said Kamala Harris, according to a recent survey by The Asian American Foundation. Ms. Harris does not shy away from talking about her Indian heritage and Asian American identity.

As market competition heated up, Tesla started cutting prices, which turned into an industrywide price war that Tesla isn't winning. It's a steep fall, considering Tesla's share of the EV market used to be as high as 80%. Critics balked, but Musk assured the Tesla community that this was the only strategy to save the company. Musk is looking for ways to buy time for Tesla — and one of those ways is to get Trump elected. Preserving Tesla's market position is imperative until he can conjure another product that people are excited to buy.

"For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said at this year's Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Kennedy went further than Trump, promising to establish a 4 million bitcoin strategic reserve to match the country's current stake in gold, some of which is held near the military base at Fort Knox. But Trump's reservation speaks to the complications of promising a bitcoin strategic reserve on par with the gold standard. An executive order would not be enough to bring a U.S. bitcoin reserve into existence. That existing bitcoin stockpile could act as the foundation for the bitcoin strategic reserve, which the U.S. government would build on by regularly buying a certain number of bitcoin.
