CNN —Ford is laying off about 700 workers who build the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck, and unlike other recent layoffs this one has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union. The company said overall demand for its electric vehicle lineup remains strong with a 65% increase in the third quarter. It has laid off nearly 2,500 workers so far, not counting those who had been building the Lightning. Workers laid off due to the strike are ineligible for unemployment benefits in most states. But the F-150 Lightning workers who are laid off will be eligible for both unemployment and sub pay, according to Ford spokesperson Jessica Enoch.

Box office analysts became Swifties in the lead-up to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film release, estimating blockbuster-style opening weekend numbers. While the pop singer fell short of the $100 million benchmark, domestic ticket sales still topped $95 million, according to distributor AMC Entertainment. Already, the film has shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing concert film release domestically, surpassing Justin Beiber's "Never Say Never" film release, which hauled in $73 million over the course of its run in theaters in 2011, in a single weekend. Swift's Eras Tour film is also the widest-released concert film in history, arriving in more than 3,850 domestic locations during its debut. Initially, expectations said Swift could tally between $40 million and $60 million on Friday, on her way to an opening weekend draw of as much as $150 million.

Members of Unifor, the Canadian union that represents 4,300 workers at GM, voted 80% in favor of the new deal, which gives them base-wage increases of nearly 20% during the life of the deal and improves their pensions. Had the GM rank and file of Unifor voted down the tentative deal, the union was prepared to immediately resume the strike. Unifor members in three Ontario cities went on strike at GM just after the deadline at 11:59 p.m. Monday. We did that.”“Nothing worthwhile is ever easy – and labor negotiations are no exception,” Marissa West, president and managing director of GM Canada, said in a statement. Six major candidates — four Republicans, one Democrat and one independent — are vying for the seat that is being vacated by Gov. With Edwards unable to run due to consecutive term limits, the election opens a huge opportunity for Republicans to win Louisiana’s top position. Louisiana is one of three states with a gubernatorial election this fall, along with Mississippi and Kentucky. State Rep. Richard Nelson withdrew from the race in September and endorsed Landry but will remain on the ballot per state election laws. With four significant GOP candidates vying for the position, Democrats are hopeful that Wilson, their sole major candidate, will succeed.

Taylor Swift fans had just eight hours to buy tickets for last-minute Thursday night previews of her Eras Tour concert film. Until this week, Fain had announced all of the union's new strikes on Fridays, during what has become a weekly livestreamed update for union members. "We continue to believe the escalation at [Ford] this week is a sign the talks may be coming to an end. KY Truck is likely Ford's most profitable plant, and therefore the strike is the highest level of escalation, aside from a national strike," Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan wrote in a Friday note. But the UAW's leaders may be looking one more step ahead, to the process of selling a tentative deal with Ford to their members. ), and that UAW members have secured the last few ounces of wage, benefits, and job protection concessions that they can get," Lache wrote Thursday to investors.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union isn't adding any factories to those that are now on strike, but its president says more walkouts could begin at any moment. But UAW President Shawn Fain told workers in a live video appearance that the companies started gaming the system, waiting until Fridays to make progress in bargaining. “We will be calling out plants when we need to, where we need to, with little notice,” Fain said on Friday morning. “We're not sticking to one pattern or one system of giving these companies an extra hour or an extra day. The UAW then made a surprise move on Wednesday, escalating the strikes by adding a huge Ford pickup truck and SUV plant in Kentucky.

All are expected to pay significantly less than UAW members at those engine and transmission plants are now paid.
